LIBRARY
STORYTIME
Regular storytelling sessions, including a craft activity, are held
at 10.30am on Tuesdays and Fridays for pre-school age children
during the school term and at 10.30am on Fridays during the
school holidays.
BABY RHYME TIME
Give your baby a great start in their journey to literacy at Baby
Rhyme Time. Sessions are held on Mondays and Wednesdays
during the school term and on Mondays during the school

SUE BEE’S READING HIVE
This is a fun and encouraging reading program especially for
children in year one. After ten library visits, young members
are rewarded with a book to keep.

THE CORRIDOR AND SIR CHARLES
Compare the past and present as you explore the narrow
corridor that links north and south sections of Subiaco. Follow
the trail of old tram lines and learn about the life and legend
of civic leader Sir Charles Gairdner as you pass by the new
children’s hospital.

Young Artists. The award encourages imagination and
innovation, and is a great opportunity to develop skills in visual
arts. All school students aged between five and eighteen
years in Western Australia are invited to submit an original
drawing, painting or other two-dimensional (2D) creation,
no bigger than 1 metre by 1.5 metres in size. Exhibited
entries from 2014 along with the competition entry dates
can be found on the city’s website.

SHAUN TAN AWARD FOR YOUNG ARTISTS

The city proudly presents the annual Tim Winton Award
for Young Writers. The award encourages imagination and
innovation, and provides a great opportunity to develop
creative writing skills. All Western Australian school students
aged between five and eighteen years are encouraged to put
pen to paper and submit an original piece of writing of no
more than 2000 words. Winning stories from previous years,
along with the competition entry dates can be found on the
city’s website.

The city’s Photographic Awards is an annual event which aims to
encourage creativity, artistic excellence and community
involvement in the arts.

The awards are open to amateur and professional photographers
in the Perth metropolitan area aged six years and over. Entries are
accepted in the Subiaco or Open categories and must be
submitted electronically. There are two youth prizes, awarded to
the best primary school and best high school photograph.

The city’s Community Development Grants support community

Grant rounds take place quarterly and funding of up to $5000

The Subi Kids Crew is a unique opportunity for motivated
children aged seven to eleven years to develop a sense of
participation and civic responsibility.
Subi’s future – for kids is an exciting and innovative addition to
the city’s suite of strategic planning documents. The booklet
takes key messages from the city’s Strategic Community Plan
and Corporate Business Plan and puts it into language that
children can understand. The booklet examines the six focus
areas identified in the Strategic Community Plan and includes
activities to help children make the most of the booklet.

The city provides Subiaco residents with a free child car
restraint fitting or checking service at Kidsafe WA, located at
Princess Margaret Hospital.
Vouchers for this free service can be collected from the city’s
Administration Centre from Monday to
Friday between 8.30am and 5pm.
Proof of residency is required.
Subiaco Library is part of the
Breastfeeding Welcome Here
program and encourages mothers to
use the library to breastfeed. The space is
quiet, air-conditioned, fully accessible and
the library toilet is equipped with baby change table
facilities. The library also subscribes to the Australian
Breastfeeding Association’s Essence magazine, available
in the parenting collection.
The city runs a free fortnightly Mums without mums group on
Tuesdays from 10.30am to 12pm (except during school holidays).
It is a chance for women in similar situations to
support each other, share stories and talk
about raising their children over a tea or
coffee. The group is facilitated by a
local volunteer and open to all,

CONCERTS
Events
The city’s popular free sunset@subi summer concert series takes
place on Sunday evenings between 5 pm and 7pm from mid
December till February. These family-friendly concerts are held
in various parks and reserves throughout Subiaco and feature
local and visiting artists performing genres from folk and jazz,
through to world music. Bring a picnic and enjoy the surrounds
with fantastic entertainment for the whole family.
The city’s free winter concert series, sunday@subi runs from
mid June till August at the Subiaco Arts Centre, 180 Hamersley
Road, Subiaco. The concerts run from 2pm to 3.30pm with
tickets available at the door from 1.15pm. One ticket is
distributed to each person until all tickets are allocated.

MUSEUM
Subiaco Museum is open on Tuesdays to Fridays from 1pm to
4 pm and on Saturdays from 12 pm to 4 pm.
Visitors can enjoy the permanent and changing exhibitions
mounted in the museum's five display rooms.
Guided tours are available by appointment for schools and
group visits. There is no admission fee.

Get involved in Subiaco’s own amazing race! See Subiaco in a
whole new way as part of the annual Race around Subi. Teams
take part in challenges and answer questions all over Subiaco
to be the first back to the finish line. Great prizes are up for
grabs and there is a sausage sizzle for all competitors. The
October event starts and finishes at Subi Farmers Market, 271

people aged twelve to twenty-five years an opportunity to
participate in a series of free activities as part of the western

AmpFest is an original music competition that gives

YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT GRANTS
The city’s Youth Achievement Grants support
young residents aged twelve to twenty-five achieve
their goals. Individuals may apply for grants to assist with
costs associated with participation in a state, national or
international event, competition or community project.
Applications are assessed upon receipt and there is no closing
date. However, applications should be submitted as early as
possible to allow adequate assessment time before your event.
