Cuzco, Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu Planning Tips
Planning tips for Cuzco,
THE Sacred Valley &
Machu Picchu:
Climate: The Peruvian Highlands have two
seasons – rainy season (Jan. through Apr.) and
dry season (May through Dec.).
High Season: The dry season is the best time
to visit but crowds peak during Jul. and Aug.
Temperature: In Cuzco, the average high
temperature is 66ºF to 70ºF, while average lows
range from 34ºF to 44ºF.
Rain: Throughout the year, brief rain showers
are common in Cuzco, the Sacred Valley, and
Machu Picchu. We recommend scheduling two
visits to Machu Picchu, as the citadel is often
surrounded by fog and you’ll want a clear view
to capture the perfect photo.
Hiram Bingham Train
Vistadome Train
TRANSPORTATION & geography
Home Base: Machu Picchu can only be
accessed via Aguas Calientes, a small village
near the base of the ruins. The pueblo can be
reached by train from either Poroy Station (near
Cuzco) or Ollantaytambo Station
(Sacred Valley).
Getting to Machu Picchu: Shuttle buses
from Aguas Calientes to the ruins run from
5:30 am to 5:30 pm.
Altitude Acclimation: We recommend flying
to Cuzco and transferring to stay a few nights
in the Sacred Valley to acclimate to the area at
an altitude lower than that of Cuzco.
Onward Travels: After Machu Picchu, spend a
few nights exploring the Inca capital of Cuzco
before continuing to Lake Titicaca, the
Amazonas region, or return to Lima.
permits: Advance purchase is required for
entrance to Machu Picchu. A permit is also
required to hike Huayna Picchu Mountain and
Machu Picchu Mountain. Passports are
required for entry into Machu Picchu Ruins.
Book Ahead: Inca Trail permits can sell out
months ahead of time, so we recommend
booking six weeks to six months in advance,
depending on your date of travel.
Hiking Seasons: Crowds are fewest from Dec.
through Mar. (trek closed in Feb.), while Jun.,
Jul., and Aug. are the most popular hiking months.
Independent Trekking: Independent hiking is
prohibited. By law, you must book your trek
with a professional guide or agency.
