President’s Forum
November is a month of Remembrance; a time to remember those who have died:
 November 2 is All Souls Day;
 November 11 is Remembrance Day;
 November 23 marks the thirteen days prior to the Ecole Polytechnique Massacre that took place in
Montreal on December 6, 1989.
I know growing up in Canada it is sometime difficult to NOT take our freedom, our safety and our
equality for granted. We live in a country where we settle disputes through the courts, grievances,
mediation, arbitration, elections, collective bargaining processes, etc.
We are able to do this because of those courageous men and women who came before us. While many
fought for our freedom in some branch of the Canadian military, others fought for equality, social justice
and fair labour practices on home soil.
My father was a WWII veteran. He spent five years overseas in France, Germany, Italy, Belgium and
Great Britain. He was a motorcycle messenger who would bring information and orders to the front
lines. Although he was injured, he recuperated with an ally family in England and returned to the war.
My father rarely spoke of the war. He only said that he saw a lot of friends die. My father’s closest
friend was a man he served with and one we called, “Uncle”. I know that many of you have family
members and/or friends who have been or are involved in some branch of the Canadian Military. Let us
remember them all in our prayers of thanks and remembrance.
As I attended the Remembrance Day service in Bronte yesterday, I was proud to witness John MacPhail
and his grade seven class marching in the parade alongside veterans and other participants. The grade
seven students laid a wreath at the cenotaph on behalf of the students of St. Dominic School. What a
beautiful example of our faith in action.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Polytechnique Massacre; a horrific act of violence against
women. The Canadian Labour Congress and the YWCA are challenging communities to remember
each of the fourteen women who were murdered, in the thirteen days prior to when this senseless act
took place on December 6. The challenge is for communities to spotlight local monuments, landmarks,
offices workplaces and homes with lights in the thirteen days leading up to December 6 and using a red
light on December 6 to highlight the importance of this event.
As we take time this November to remember, please know that our school board office and our Catholic
parishes have books of Remembrance that will remain out for the month of November. You can include
the names of loved ones, they will be remembered in our prayers.
Sincerely,
Nina March, President, Halton Elementary OECTA
