I Need a HIRO - Territory Stories

FISHING & HUNTING FRONTIER 41
SUNDAY MAY 8 2016
“There are some big
crabs and they are full.
We know when they are
around because we
start selling crab pots”
late in the tide further upriver.
“There were plenty about, but not a lot of
good point scorers.
“There were many small fish, 40cm to 65cm,
and quite a few 17cm to 35cm fish.
“And of course it has been reported that
boats were hitting stumps because of the low
water. We saw stumps that looked like the top
of a 44-gallon drum.”
In other reports, Pat said mud crabs were on
the move in Darwin Harbour.
“Middle Arm and West Arm are both worth
crabbing,” he said.
“There are some big crabs and they are full.
We know when they are around because we
start selling crab pots. Crabs have been a bit
patchy so far. They didn’t come on as strong
this year as I had hoped, so we will see what
happens in the next month.
“Jewies have been pretty good, and they
have been getting goldies on the charter boats,
and also reds from not that far out.
“Two jewfish were caught during the
Nationals, one just below No Fish Creek by
tourists, and another right up the top, and they
were black jewfish, not the smaller variety.”
Craig’s Fishing Warehouse’s Mal Strong
said Mandorah wharf produced queenfish and
GTs last weekend.
“And the Bynoe Harbour jetty wreck has
had jewies to around 10kg to 12kg,” he said.
“There have been good snapper around
Quail Island and Fish Reef.
“A mate caught an 18kg spanish mackerel
on a blue and silver Mack Magnet off
Larrakeyah naval base.
“There were tuna around the Six Mile Buoy
grounds last week, and spotted mackerel at
Angler Reef. There were also barra at
Nourlangie Creek last weekend, even though
the run-off has pretty much gone.
“The Finniss River has been producing some
really good barra. Crabs have been doing well
in Woods Inlet and Shoal Bay. And there have
been jewfish coming out of Leaders Creek.
“I have not heard much from Dundee,
although there was one big sailfish posted on
Facebook.”
In the FFF Seadogs competition at
fishingterritory.com, the Jewfish + Barra round
for May is pretty much wide open, and there is
still time to enter for a chance to win a
MotorGuide Xi5 electric motor from In and
Outboard Marine, a Garmin plotter/sounder,
Berkley portable outboard, Tonic Eyewear, and
more.

I went to East Point to fish in accordance
with the incoming tide early in the
morning.
The tides weren’t big. The currents
caused by tides were slow. In addition to
that, the sea water was very clear.
Moreover, the sea surface was flat. As
might be expected, the results were poor.
I went to Fannie Bay next. The tide was
still coming in. There were many big
oyster-rocks in the water.
A barramundi was hiding in the
structures in ambush for its bait fish in very
clear water, particularly when the sea
surface was flat. I used a Bomber Long 15A
with the same colour as the rocks in the
water that can obtain a good fishing result,
even from cautious fish.
As a result, I caught a small barramundi
at that fishing spot in Fannie Bay.
I went home. Afternoon turned into
evening. I went fishing in different clothes
to a shallow part of the sea where there
were a lot of rocks at Myilly Point.
The tide was slowly coming in. The wind
had risen and the sea surface became
wavy. The water became murky in colour.
The productive fishing window opened
for an hour at that spot without moving to
other fishing spots.
For the same reason as in the morning I
used a Bomber Long 15A with the same
colour as the rocks. The lure action was
done by jerking my fishing rod because the
sea surface was wavy.
