THE FASNY ELEMENTARY NEWS www.fasny.org What’s New on the Larchmont Campus ♥♥ For Students/By Students Issue #3 Since 2013 FASNY students will raise money for charity by playing basketball. We will be helping the American Heart Association by playing basketball and raising money. This organization helps people who have heart problems. By raising a certain amount of money we can get different prizes this year. For example, if you raise from $5.00 to $14.99, you get a little rubber duck. We will also have different rubber ducks for special bonuses, either a striped duck, a trophy duck or a glow duck. Guillaume R. 3rd Grade Visits the Planetarium The 3rd Grade went to the Planetarium. We all first went into a room where the people from the planetarium divided us into groups. One of the groups went into the Planetarium and the others went into the art room. In the Planetarium, I saw a starry sky. We had a man who was our guide. We talked about planets, different stars and constellations. It was fun! Next, the groups switched and I went into the art room. There we made a real planet and an imaginary planet. Finally, all the groups came together again and we all left. It was fantastic! New Cafeteria Rules We now have a schedule so everyone will know when it is their turn to help keep the cafeteria clean. She prefers plowing the fields of her family’s farm and trying to compete with her brothers rather than sewing or baking. She was friends with the Native American Indians, but other settlers were afraid of the natives. Some people thought the Native Americans would try to massacre the settlers. In this story, she goes on many adventures with her brothers. Her brothers, Tom and Warren, would visit the Indians with her. They would go across a river to get to the Indian camp. The Indians were shocked that someone could have such red hair like Caddie’s. They would always try to touch it. Once, on her way back home from the Indian camp, she found hazel nuts and stopped to pick them. Realizing it was getting late, Caddie ran through some bushes, tearing her dress and getting dirt on her face. When she got back home, her clothes ripped and her face dirty, she found her family around the dinner table with the circuit rider. The circuit rider is a holy man who has dinner with families at their home. He prays and eats with them. Caddie was so surprised, she dropped all of the nuts on the ground. There were hazel nuts all over the floor, bouncing and rolling all over the place. Another adventure that she had was when she went skating on a lake in the winter. She and her brother Warren were watching their brother Tom make amazing moves like pirouettes, but they couldn’t imitate him. Warren then dared Caddie to skate as far out as she could on the thin ice. She ended up falling through and catching a nasty cold. Tom and Warren eventually saved her. These were some of the many adventures that Caddie had. This book was very humorous and exciting! Julien C. 4th Grade Learns About the OceansBy Julien C. In 4th grade, we are learning about the oceans and the water cycle. We learned that rain, snow, hail and other precipitation is made of water that was evaporated from the ocean. We measured the salinity and density of water using a hydrometer. We learned that salt water was denser than fresh water because it had an element the fresh water did not have: salt! We are also studying the water cycle. Here are the steps of the water cycle: first the water evaporates (turns to steam) because the sun beats on the water all day long. The steam floats up in the sky, to meet the clouds. Up in the sky, it is very cold so it condenses (turns back to water) because the higher you go the colder it is. Finally, it falls back to earth in various forms of precipitation (snow, hail, rain) and then it starts all over again. Guillaume R. 2 4th Grade Visits Famous Apollo Theater in Harlem On February 10, 2014, 4th grade became live legends because we performed in the amazing Apollo Theater. First, Mr. Tyree led us into the theater. Then, Ms. Jackie told us about the history of this landmark building. The building was built in 1914, which means it is celebrating its 100th birthday, but it wasn’t called the Apollo Theater. It had a different name and there was a certain age limit to come in. On top of that, African Americans couldn’t come in because of segregation. Then in 1934 it became the Apollo Theater and was open to everybody. They have a special night, called Amateur Night at the Apollo, on which anyone can come and perform. We even got to perform ourselves. Mr. Mitchell introduced a few groups of students who wanted to go up on stage. He made sure that everyone rubbed the famous “tree of hope” for good luck. He also showed us the Wall of Signatures, where famous people like Magic Johnson, Lebron James, Nicky Minaj, Taylor Swift and Bruce Springsteen had signed. Then he showed us the dressing rooms. Now anyone is allowed to go and perform on stage at the Apollo! Guillaume R. Plaques commemorating famous singers lined the sidewalk outside the Guillaume R. Apollo Theatre. Thomas B. recorded information while Ludmilla L. snapped photos on an ipad. Nous sommes en trains d’apprendre sur les hommes prehistorique.
