Pastoral Message: The Holy Week: We begin the most special week of the Liturgical year.
April 9: Today, we celebrate Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion. We read not only the great
welcome Jesus received from the people, but we then learn how they turned against Him when we
hear the Passion according to St. Matthew.
April 11: On Tuesday, the bishop and the priests of our Diocese will gather at our Cathedral of St.
Joseph the Workman, La Crosse , to celebrate the annual Chrism Mass. At that Mass, the priests will
renew their priestly promises, and the Bishop will bless the three oils that will go to each parish for the
coming year. The oils will be used to celebrate various sacraments in the parishes.
April 13: We have the Holy Mass at 7 PM on Holy Thursday. We will begin a special Mass called the
Mass of the Lord’s Supper. As the Mass begins, the Season of Lent officially ends, and we enter a
three-day Season called Triduum. In the Mass the priest will wash the feet of some of the people of
God just as Jesus washed the feet of his Apostles. The washing of the feet symbolizes the new form
of leadership Jesus gave to his disciples, that is, to be the leader, one must be the servant of all.
April 14: Good Friday is a day of fasting and abstinence – we commemorate Jesus’ Passion and
Death. We will have the service at 2 PM that is in three parts: Reading of the Passion; Veneration of
the Cross; and a Communion Service. After the service there will be the Station of the Cross.
April 15: On Holy Saturday, we will celebrate the Easter Vigil Mass at 8:30 AM. The Easter Vigil
contains the Blessing of the fire, Blessing of water, and the Renewal of Baptismal promises.
April 16: Easter Sunday, we will have our regular Sunday Mass at 9:30 AM.
Let us enter into the spirit of this Holy Week, participating as fully as possible in the liturgies, and
uniting our sufferings with Christ’s passion.
May his Passion empower us in moments of our own passion and suffering.
Fr. Doss
