General Notes:
Charies was seven years old when he came from Malmo, Sweden, he later became a lumberjack.
After marrying Mary O. Estabrook, who had a son, named Harvey Estabrook,moved to a fmit fami
three miles south of Mears called East Golden and traversed by the Pere Marquette Railroad. In
1904 the family bought a 25 acre fruit farm one mile west of Mears on the road to Silver Lake.
Moving again in 1914 to a farm in Maple Range formeriy owned by her parents, they were 12
miles east of Shelby. Injuries caused by an auto accident resulted in Charies death in January
1918, he is buried in Ferry Cemetery.

General Notes:
I remember Aunt Fem as being a very tall lady. I always loved going to her house, on the Putney
famn. My Mom tells the story of helping Aunt Fem can Maple Syrup after they had papered the
kitchen. While canning the synjp the paper all came loose and came down.
She fell while pregnant for her son Edwin Charles Putney. She fell on the big flat rock, outside of
the grannery on the farm at Maple Range. The rock was used as a step.
She had heart problems I remember, she even had a pacemaker put in.
Arthur A. Putney is the son of Ira Amos Putney and Sarah (Daisy) Converse. He was bom on 20
May 1900 in Feny Michigan. He died on 05 Aug 1990 in Shelby. Burial on 07 Aug 1990 in Ferry
Cemetery Oceana.

Generation 4
Jonathan Putney was the son of Joseph of Dunbarton and settled in Vemiont. Amos, son of
Jonathan, served in the War of 1812. Aftenyard moving to Canada. His son, Bernard, married a
part Portugese woman and raised fifteen children. They moved from Canada to Ashtabula Co. in
Ohio. Part of the family came to Michigan in the late 1850's.
Amos W. Putney, the thirteenth in his family, married Ann Marie Evans in 1860. They were the
first white couple to be married in Ferry Township of Oceana Co. Their famri in Section 20. Ferry
Twp. was acquired in 1860, and the original deed still entanct in the Putney family files was signed
by President James Buchanan.
Amos was a hunter who developed poor health and was unable to serve in the Civil War, so he
resorted to the legal practice of hiring a substitute for $300.00; a very sizable sum for a poor
fanner/hunter of those days. He died at the age of 35.
The fami was turned over to his son lra(1866-1937) He manied Sarah (Daisy)Converse on New
Years eve, 1885. They had five children: Jennie (1888-1965) manied a fanner Albert Studer.
They had eleven children. Mary Lydia (1889-1963) manied a fanner, Clyde Sumner, and they
had two children. Bessie(1892-1898). Arthur(1900) married Fern Anderson of Mears, raised five
children and acquired the original land tract. Amos (1901) manied Pauline Billheimer, and retired
from the ministry in Indiana.They had two children.
Arthur served in Worid War 1, and as deputy sherrif during the prohibition days. He was always
active in the Wesleyan church, and retired from farming and the Feny School System. Arthur and
Ferns Children were Robert (1925) manied Phyllis Fessenden, served in Worid War 11 and
retired from Industry. (Their son Marie now owns the original farm.) Milford (1928) married
Ruthanna Sills, served in the Korean War and retired from industry in Indiana. Lavon (1931)
manied Richard Shinew, and retired from Gerbers Products in Fremont. Lois(1932) graduated
from Marion college, married Guy Rayle, a minister, and taught school. Mary (1934) an R.N.
graduated from Wheaton College with a degree in teaching nursing and married Jesse Cariisle.

General Notes:
A young minister left Marion, Indiana, to pastor the Walkerville Wesleyan Church in Oceana
County. Guy Ellis Ray Jr., with Lois and two young sons arrived in WalKerville on Nov. 1960.
Guy was t)om near Beulah, Michigan in 1935, moving to Traverse City in his early teens. In 1954
he left to attend Marion College. Here he met Lois Arlene Putney, daughter of Arthur Putney of
Feny Township, Oceana Co., After Lois's college graduation, they were manied in Ferry,
Michigan, on June 19,1955. The couple returned to college for Guy to continue his education,
and Lois to teach at Sweetser, Inc.
They spent about two years in Traverse City while Guy followed the heating and plumbing trade.
Their son David was bom May 28,1956,. Again they retumed to Marion for Guy's education and
where their son Dean was bom, Aug.11,1959.
From here the family came to WalkerviHe, Michigan for Guy to pastor and work in the plumbing
and heating trade. Lois taught kindergarten at Elbridge school and two years at Walkerville
Community School.
Guy and family went to Saginaw Michigan, where he was appointed pastor of the Dice Wesleyan
Church, and in charge of building a new sanctuary. Their third son , Eric, was bom in Saginaw on
Dec. 3,1965.
Guy , Lois, and sons retumed to Oceana County, in August, 1966, to pastor the West Golden
Wesleyn Church, west of Mears. Guy also taught at Golden School for one year, and later served
on the school board.Guy's new business of *'Oceana Resort Patrol" a periodic checking of
cottages after resort season , was expanding, involving the help of the whole family. The Mears
post offtoe needed a substitute rural mail earner in 1968,so Guy accepted the job , which later
became full time. The whole family lived in the parsonage next to the church, moving into the new
parsonage after its completion in 1975. Guy resigned as pastor of the West Golden Church in
1977.
Guy accepted the pastorate of Elbridge Community Church east of Hart in December 1977.
David Ellis Rayle. the oldest son, nraved to Grand Rapids to attend college and work. He died in
a house fire on Feb. 28,1985 and is buried in Mears Cemetry.
Dean Arthur Rayle lives in Kalamazoo, working as a microfilm specialist for Great Lakes
Technologies. He manied Sheri Lee Deal on March 4,1989 at Beulah, Michigan.
Eric Guy Rayle attends Western Michigan Univ. in Kalamazoo, studying for secondary education.
He also works as a Dune scooter driver for Mac Woods during the summer months.
