Exercise 1 Editing with Semicolons
Some of the following sentences need one or more semicolons. On the blank, write the
word before the semicolon, and add the semicolon after it. If a sentence is correct as
written, write C on the line.

Use a semicolon to combine each pair of independent clauses in a compound sentence.
Use a conjunctive adverb or a transitional expression after the semicolon in at least three
sentences.
1. “Sprint” triathlons are shorter triathlons. They still include a swim, a bike ride, and
a run.
2. I am training for my first triathlon. It is a “sprint” triathlon.
3. The swim will be my weakest race. I’m glad it’s first so I can get it over with.
4. I am strongest at running. I run several 5K races and a half-marathon each summer.
5. I think I’ll do well during the bike race. I am afraid of crashing into another biker
during the race!
