In 2013, Martin Health introduced a new motto – “Better. For You.” We believe this conveys the essence of Martin Health’s philosophy, purpose and promise. We know the community counts on us for exceptional health care and it is our mission to deliver this care to each and every patient we serve. At Martin Health, patient safety and quality are first and foremost in everything we do. Our quality focus includes interdisciplinary teams from across the health system who incorporate industry best practices and ensure we not only meet quality standards, but exceed them. We consistently look for opportunities to enhance our system and the services we provide so our patients and their families have better access to the care they need. The addition of Tradition Medical Center in west Port St. Lucie and our partnership with HealthSouth to establish a new comprehensive rehabilitation hospital on the Martin Hospital South campus in June 2013, are good examples of this. The positive impact of both of these new hospitals was evident before they even opened their doors. As a modern, state-of-the-art hospital on the campus of the Tradition Center for Innovation, Dwight D. Denny Chairman of the Board of Directors Evan Collins, MD Medical Staff President Tradition Medical Center has created the opportunity for Martin Health to profoundly influence and shape the way healthcare is delivered for generations to come. HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital at Martin Health filled a gap in the Treasure Coast for comprehensive medical rehabilitation services. When the hospital opened its doors, area patients and their families felt relief knowing they would now have direct access to these vital services. As Martin Health strengthens and grows, we never lose sight of our commitment to the Treasure Coast community. This Annual Report illustrates that commitment, which includes investing in the latest technologies in diagnosis and treatment, advancing health care through clinical trials, offering better economic opportunities through good-paying professional jobs and concentrating resources on community needs where we feel we can have the greatest impact. In order to keep pace with the rapidly changing health care environment, Martin Health needs to be constantly changing, too. But what will never change is our commitment to always be there with exceptional care, hope and compassion. We are always striving to be BETTER…for you. At Martin Health, caring for the patient is at the heart of everything we do. Our doctors and clinical staff, support staff and volunteers go the distance to offer compassion and respect to every patient we serve. Debra Boyce learned the value of the Martin Health mission upon receiving the devastating news that her breast cancer had metastasized. She had no health insurance and was concerned about both her personal health and her financial situation. Carolyn Shore, RN, a Martin Health breast cancer navigator, worked with Debra to find financial help for her treatment through Medicaid. In the months that followed – through chemotherapy and recovery – Debra received ongoing support from Shore. “If it wasn’t for Carolyn, I wouldn’t have been able to receive treatment,” Debra said. “She eliminated all of my anxiety and made me feel so completely comfortable.” Genevieve Rasik, an expectant mom whose husband was serving in the military in Afghanistan, desperately wanted her husband present for the birth of their son. She knew that like most hospitals, Martin Health had protocols prohibiting recording devices in the delivery room. Rasik spoke with her obstetrician, Peter Papapanos, MD, about using Skype in the delivery room. Dr. Papapanos worked with Martin Health administration to find a way to meet the needs of the family while upholding safety and compliance concerns. On November 13, 2013, Benjamin Rasik was born at Martin Medical Center with his father present through the use of an iPad and Skype. “It was an amazing experience to be able to help a dad, who was thousands of miles away serving our country, watch his child being born,” Dr. Papapanos said. “I’m so grateful to Dr. Papapanos and Martin Medical Center. My husband has to sacrifice so much, but he didn’t have to miss the birth of his son.” - Genevieve Rasik, Port St. Lucie mom Peter Papapanos, MD (left) and Genevieve Rasik holding newborn Benjamin (right). 2 | Martin Health System | martinhealth.org 2251 MHS 2013 Annual Report v4.indd 2 3/4/14 1:49 PM Innovation makes Martin Health BETTER Jonathan Polhemus, MD, and Rachel Wulff, RN, are joined in the emergency department at Tradition Medical Center by RP-VITA, an iRobot that remotely connects them with an off-site neurologist. Staying on top of cutting-edge technology and sophisticated surgical methods and devices is paramount to providing high quality health care. Martin Health is committed to being in the forefront of new procedures and tools that can enhance the experience of our patients. The new Minimally Invasive Surgery Center at Martin Health provides patients with access to a wide range of minimally invasive surgical options. These minimally invasive procedures are designed to cause less stress to the body than traditional surgery and reduce pain, blood loss and the chance of infection. They can also lead to minimal scarring, shorter hospital stays and quicker recoveries for patients. Martin Medical Center is also the only Treasure Coast hospital with two dedicated interventional radiology rooms. A robot known as RP-VITA® (Remote Presence Virtual + Independent Telemedicine Assistant) is transforming the delivery of emergency care at Tradition Medical Center. Currently used in cases of stroke, the robot allows an off-site neurologist or other specialized physician to remotely connect with the care team in the emergency department using a smartphone or iPad. The robot transfers real-time clinical data to the specialist who remotely consults with the care team to evaluate and treat the patient. Using new technology and advancements in atherectomy devices (for the removal of atherosclerosis from blood vessels), Martin Health has been successful in significantly reducing the amputation rate related to peripheral arterial disease. Vascular surgeons use state-of-the-art technology that allows them to open blood vessels below the knee that are difficult to access. As a result, limbs that may have been previously considered for amputation are now being saved. In 2013, Martin Health implemented a new technology to enhance patient safety and prevent creation of a duplicate medical record and medical identity theft. The RightPatient™ Biometric Patient Identification System takes a photo of a patient’s Iris pattern and face and links both to his/her medical record creating a safe, accurate patient ID. 3 | Martin Health System | martinhealth.org 2251 MHS 2013 Annual Report v4.indd 3 3/4/14 1:49 PM Commitment to Quality Improvement Makes Martin Health BETTER Quality improvement is a constant and collaborative effort at Martin Health. We continually engage our associates, physicians and volunteers in implementing changes that contribute to improved patient health. Our success is determined by our outcomes, patient satisfaction and how we compare to local and national benchmarks. Because of our commitment to high quality patient care, we also receive annual recognitions and awards that reflect these efforts. These recognitions are a source of humility and pride, but never distract us from our relentless pursuit of providing exceptional health care, hope and compassion to every patient, every time. d Awards an ns io Accreditat EIGHT-TIME WINNER The Truven Health Analytics 100 Top Hospitals in the United States For the fourth year in a row and the eighth year overall, Martin Health System was named one of the Truven Health Analytics 100 Top Hospitals in the United States. In 2009, Martin Health joined with the Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies, the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute of Florida and the Mann Research Center to form the Tradition Center for Innovation in Port St Lucie. Tradition Medical Center, now located on the campus of the Tradition Center for Innovation, provides even greater opportunities for Martin Health to collaborate with the life sciences institutes to advance clinical trials available locally and bring research from the bench to the bedside. Without research, we can’t discover new medicines and advanced clinical technologies or uncover new methods of detecting and treating disease. Research is critical to advancing the quality of care we offer. Moti Ramgopal, MD, medical director of the Center for Clinical Research at Martin Health. - Moti Ramgopal, MD “I enjoy the uniqueness of it,” he said. “You can initiate a therapy and within hours you will know if there has been any improvement.” As a laboratory supervisor, Mark Frankowiak supports the work of the clinical research center. Moti Ramgopal, MD, infectious disease specialist and the new medical director of the Center for Clinical Research at Martin Health, will play a pivotal role in this effort. Dr. Ramgopal has long been drawn to the science of improving treatment options – and finding cures – for acute and chronic infectious diseases. Growing up in Guyana, Dr. Ramgopal became familiar with the tropical infectious diseases so commonplace in his homeland. Later, working in the Bahamas, he witnessed the loss of many young people who were dying of HIV/AIDS. In 2002, he co-founded Midway Immunology and Research Center in Fort Pierce where he has devoted much of his time to the treatment of HIV/AIDS over the past 11 years. As part of the Center for Clinical Research, Dr. Ramgopal hopes to engage more physicians in the understanding and practice of clinical trials while helping the center become nationally recognized. 5 | Martin Health System | martinhealth.org 2251 MHS 2013 Annual Report v4.indd 5 3/4/14 1:49 PM Tradition Medical Center Opens Doors in 2013 Terissa Aronson, president and CEO, St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce; Dwight Denny, chairman, Martin Health Board of directors; Mark Robitaille, Martin Health president and CEO; Robert Lord, Martin Health senior vice president; Libby Flippo, Martin Health assistant vice president; JoAnn Faiella, mayor of Port St. Lucie. Martin Health System was pleased to open the doors of Tradition Medical Center on December 18, 2013. The excitement and enthusiasm for this long-awaited opening was felt throughout the community. For Martin Health, it was the completion of a 15-year journey to gain approvals and construct a new, state-of-the-art hospital in west Port St. Lucie. Located on a 20-acre site at the southwest corner of Tradition Boulevard and Interstate 95, the 90-bed acute care hospital was designed with input from both Martin Health associates, affiliated physicians and members of the community. The result was a contemporary medical center that emphasizes patient comfort and high-quality care, while maximizing operational efficiency and effectiveness. In addition to emergency care, the hospital offers general and specialized medical care, general and specialized surgical services, full diagnostic imaging capability and laboratory services. In addition to providing vital access to health care, Tradition Medical Center has provided a substantial economic boost to the community as well. More than 500 jobs were filled to staff the new hospital, including clinical care and support positions. Martin Health partnered with Mann Research Center to develop a medical office building attached to Tradition Medical Center that provides physicians and patients with direct access to hospital facilities. Mann Medical One houses physician practices, administrative offices, clinical research and infusion suites. We are grateful to everyone who partnered with us on this project. Tradition Medical Center will play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life in the community for years to come. - Mark Robitaille, Martin Health president and chief executive officer. 6 | Martin Health System | martinhealth.org 2251 MHS 2013 Annual Report v4.indd 6 3/4/14 1:49 PM COMMUNITY BENEFIT Community Benefit: Our Commitment to BETTER the Communities We Serve Martin Health associates and family members participated in the March for Babies in April 2013. Martin Health has a rich history of commitment and caring for the communities we serve. Every year, we reach beyond the walls of our hospitals and medical practices to provide programs and services that help improve the overall health of our community. This commitment is not only our duty and privilege – it is our passion. We support community programs that aim to address the most pressing community health needs. We partner with other local organizations, such as the March of Dimes, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Celebrities Fore Kids and American Heart Association, to enrich the lives of those in our community whether through sponsorship, program partnerships, or in-kind donations or services. Martin Health continues to develop community benefit standards that provide evidence-based programs and help build a strong, healthy and productive community. Community health fairs are one way Martin Health works to improve the health of the Treasure Coast region. As part of Martin Health System’s commitment to improving the overall health of the communities it serves, a Community Health Needs Assessment is conducted every three years. The overarching goal of the needs assessment is to ascertain the significant health needs of the community, prioritize them, and develop a community benefit plan to address the most pressing health care needs and reduce gaps in current services and programs. A Community Health Needs Assessment was completed in July 2013 and can be viewed at martinhealth.org/community. 7 | Community Benefits | martinhealth.org 2251 MHS 2013 Annual Report v4.indd 7 3/4/14 1:49 PM COMMUNITY BENEFIT Figures : at a Glance Martin Health System has touched the lives of over 20,000 people through community health programs such as speakers bureaus, health fairs and local community events. When Martin Health was founded in 1939, its original charter stated that all people would have access to care regardless of their ability to pay. This commitment continues today as part of our community benefit program and the work of our public assistance office. Many of the clients referred to the public assistance office have no health care coverage or have fallen on hard times. Frequently, they are overwhelmed and don’t know where to turn. Cynthia Hunter was one of these individuals. When Cynthia received a diagnosis of Stage 4 colon cancer in 2010, she had no health insurance. She met with Lissette Flores, one of Martin Health’s public assistance specialists and learned she could obtain help for her medical expenses. “Lissette helped connect me with Volunteers in Medicine and apply for Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and county assistance. She explored every avenue and took a huge burden off my shoulders. She literally saved my life!” Once the financial assistance was in place, Cynthia was able to stop worrying and focus on her impending surgery and chemotherapy. Throughout her treatment, if the myriad of statements and paperwork she received became overwhelming or confusing, she knew she could always turn to Flores. The Volunteers in Medicine Clinic serves adults in Martin County who are not on Medicare or Medicaid and are below the 200 percent poverty level. Martin Health has provided support to the VIM Clinic in the amount of more than $5 million over the past six years. Martin Health physicians, nurses and medical assistants also volunteer at the clinic. The HANDS Clinic serves the uninsured population, ages 18 to 64, who reside in St. Lucie County. Martin Health System is a community partner with the HANDS Clinic, providing such diagnostic testing as labs, x-rays and mammograms. Over the past three years, Martin Health has provided support to the HANDS Clinic in the amount of $232,000. 9 | Community Benefits | martinhealth.org 2251 MHS 2013 Annual Report v4.indd 9 3/4/14 1:50 PM COMMUNITY BENEFIT Martin Health System at a Glance 2013 Cassie Koessick, RN, is a nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit at Tradition Medical Center. Working with other organizations and businesses in the community makes Martin Health System stronger and more effective in meeting the needs in our community. In 2013, Martin Health partnered with VGTI Florida to research the Dengue Fever Virus and with HealthSouth to open a new rehabilitation hospital. Life Sciences and Martin Health Martin Health has a four-year history of working with VGTI and has helped provide bio-specimens for a wide range of clinical trials. During the summer of 2013, when news hit of the spread of Dengue Fever in south Florida, researchers at VGTI Florida collaborated with Martin Health System to quickly gain a better understanding of the disease. Blood samples were collected from consenting Martin Health patients who had been diagnosed with Dengue Fever and sent to VGTI. Researchers at VGTI began working with these local blood samples to verify the strain of Dengue Fever being spread, better understand how individuals react to the Dengue infection and further their work on creating a vaccine to combat the disease. Since specimens can deteriorate very quickly, the close proximity of Martin Health to VGTI was critical to getting quality specimens. The HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital at Martin Health This partnership brings together Martin Health’s reputation for high-quality acute care and HealthSouth’s expertise in rehabilitation. Since opening its doors on the campus of Martin Hospital South in June 2013, HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital at Martin Health has been extremely active, demonstrating the need for comprehensive physical rehabilitation services. In its first seven months of operation, the 34-bed hospital treated 450 patients, most of whom had experienced stroke or orthopaedic injuries. HealthSouth is the nation’s largest owner and operator of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals. 11 | Martin Health System | martinhealth.org 2251 MHS 2013 Annual Report v4.indd 11 3/4/14 1:50 PM Martin Health Auxiliary Volunteers provide invaluable support throughout the Martin Health System. Nicki Stamm and Susan Licari help operate the Gift Gallery in Tradition Medical Center. The Martin Health Auxiliary has a rich heritage of volunteer support. Established in 1942, the Auxiliary supports all of Martin Health’s facilities on the Treasure Coast. Today’s Auxiliary is made up of men and women from all walks of life and almost every occupation. It includes both retired and working adults, college students and teenagers who are seeking to give back to their community. The Martin Health Auxiliary is one of the largest auxiliaries in the state of Florida. As one of its core mission values, the Auxiliary not only provides volunteer services, but also focuses on philanthropic contributions to the Martin Health System. Revenue-generating volunteer activities fund contributions to Martin Health facilities and programs. The Auxiliary is currently supporting their philanthropic investment in Martin Health System with a historic pledge of $1,500,000 for the “World Class Care on the Treasure Coast” campaign. ry The Auxiliae: at a Glanc • 841 volunteers • 145,446 volunteer hours contributed in 2013 • $3.2 million in labor cost savings to Martin Health System in calendar year 2013 • Volunteer hours contributed equate to 70 full-time equivalents Clockwise from top left: Lewis Honig, courtesy cart driver; Mary-Estelle Hamden and Steve Silver, guest relations; Becky Vaughan and Marthé Silver, front desk reception. 12 | Martin Health System | martinhealth.org 2251 MHS 2013 Annual Report v4.indd 12 3/4/14 1:50 PM Martin Health System Board of Directors and Executive Leadership The Executive Team from left to right: Miguel Coty, Robert Lord, Angie Metcalf, Ed Collins, Mark Robitaille, Michael Skehan, MD, Donna Griffith, Charles Cleaver and Craig Chindemi. These three families wished to acknowledge the exceptional care received at Martin Health by making a gift that would have a lasting impact. Martin Health is deeply grateful for these generous and thoughtful gifts that support our mission to provide exceptional health care. Edward and Joan McGowan In January of 2013, an extraordinary man passed– Mr. Edward McGowan. Edward, a private man, understood the importance of philanthropy in our community. Before he passed, he ensured these values would continue. Edward and his wife Joan made a transformational gift to Martin Health System to honor the care provided by two physicians, Dr. Linda Kardos and Dr. Howard Robbins. This gift, over $10 million, is the largest Martin Health has ever received. In honor of this extraordinary gift, Martin Health has named the north tower at its flagship hospital in downtown Stuart, the“Edward and Joan McGowan Pavilion.” David and Betsy Herold Edward and Joan McGowan The Herold and Cadorette Family In Loving Memory of David Herold Family is what inspired Betsy Herold and her children to make a generous gift of $250,000 to renovate a special family suite on the fifth floor of Martin Medical Center in Stuart. The expanded “Herold Suite” will be furnished with a sleeper sofa with a built in recliner, table and storage, separate bedside tables and aesthetic updates that are designed to create a soothing and healing environment. “My late husband believed in the closeness of family and making contributions to hospitals dedicated to the overall well-being of patients and their families,” Betsy said. “This special room is designed to remove burden from the families of the ill, and the clinicians caring for them. When family can be available to take care of the ‘little things,’ doctors and nurses have more time to focus on patients.” The Mondello Family In Loving Memory of Barbara Mondello The Mondello family made a $250,000 donation in Barbara Mondello’s memory, enabling Martin Health to renovate the Inpatient Oncology Unit on 3 West at Martin Medical Center. This unit is used to treat patients’ physical, emotional, spiritual and socio-economic needs experienced as a result of the cancer diagnosis. The caregivers on 3 West at Martin Medical Center remember Barbara Mondello fondly. “What stands out most was her heart,” said Cheryl Larschan, RN, manager of clinical oncology and former patient care leader on 3 West. “Even in the midst of her own battle, she was always more concerned with our well-being. We really got to know Mr. Mondello and his family during Barbara’s stay and appreciate their desire for this gift to positively impact the healing experience of others dealing with cancer.” James and Barbara Mondello 15 | Martin Health System | martinhealth.org 2251 MHS 2013 Annual Report v4.indd 15 3/4/14 1:50 PM Philanthropy Makes A Difference 2012 Chrysanthemum Ball This annual charity gala was held at a private residence in Sailfish Point in November 2012, and hosted by Dennis and Linda Longstreet and Rich and Yvonne Ross. The Far East– themed event featured 420 patrons and raised $900,000 in funds, which were used to purchase the most advanced da Vinci Surgical System available on the Treasure Coast. The system allows physicians at Martin Medical Center to perform minimally invasive robotic surgery procedures. 2013 Chrysanthemum Ball The annual charity gala was held at the private residence in Sailfish Point in November 2013, hosted by Marylin and Arthur Levitt, and Marilyn and James Evans. The Medieval themed event featured 450 patrons and raised $1,350,000 in funds, which were used to renovate the 5th floor of Martin Health’s flagship hospital, Martin Medical Center in Stuart. The floor houses two critical patient care units: the Progressive Care Unit, for patients who are stepping down from intensive care, and the Telemetry Unit, where cardiac patients receive specialized nursing care and monitoring. 2013 Goombay Bash In July, 850 members of our community joined the LifeSavers in their mission to create awareness for the needs of new mothers and infants, as well as pediatric patients, at Martin Health. The most anticipated charity event of the summer returned to the waterfront at Jensen Beach Causeway Park and was chaired by Katey Bourgeois, Etienne Bourgeois and Britt Brandon, raising a total of $180,500.
