From the Teachers’
Desks
Parent-teacher conferences will be the afternoon
of Wednesday, October 19th and all day October 20th.
Please use the link that was e-mailed to you last
Monday to sign-up for a time that works for your
schedule. You will receive test scores that we currently
have for your child at your parent-teacher conference.
Please plan to meet with both of us at the same time.
We are looking forward to meeting with each of you!
When your child is absent, it is their responsibility
to grab a make-up homework sheet from the classroom
folder, ask their teachers what they missed, and write it
down on the sheet. This is to help prepare the 5th
graders for middle school; in middle school, students go
from class to class and ask teachers what they missed.
Please encourage your child to do his/her best
work all the time. It is essential that students read
directions, put their names on papers, and really take
their time and be neat. It helps if students are reminded
at home as well as at school.
We are quickly approaching the end of the first
quarter. Note that the first quarter ends October 28th,
and report cards will go home November 4th.
If you have questions about anything, please do
not hesitate to e-mail or call us! Note that Ms. Palmer
plans to attend a professional development conference
October 17th and 18th, and will not be at school.

Language Arts
Students will be bringing home a new poetry
recitation this week. The poem is “I Hear America
Singing” by Walt Whitman. This is a lengthier poem,
so please assist your child in breaking it into pieces
to work on memorization. We will be reciting these in
class on November 9th.
Each student has been given a copy of the
spelling list to bring home for practice. Spelling test
corrections are due Wednesday. If a student
achieves below a 93% they have the choice to
complete spelling corrections to earn ½ credit on the
words missed.
Book reports are due on Friday, October
14th. All students are required to visit the writing
center prior to turning in final copies on Friday.
We will begin meeting in our book groups
this week to discuss The Secret Garden. Students
have been given a calendar with a breakdown of
chapters by date. Students are expected to have
read the chapters, and answered the questions in the
green packet prior to meeting in reading groups. The
answers to the written discussion questions will be
discussed in groups each time, so incomplete
homework will be given a zero. This book is rich with
vocabulary. Each chapter has a vocabulary
reference in the green packet to assist students with
reading this book.
In writing this week, students will be
publishing their personal narratives. Students will
have the opportunity to share their stories with the
class. We will also begin working on third person
informative summaries. Students will be asked to
write about the importance of the ancient
Mesoamerican civilizations. We will also be talking
about homophones and homographs.
Technology
This week we will be working on our typing skills
in TTL4. Students are highly encouraged to practice their
typing skills at home using typing games or TTL4. Students
will have two fifteen-minute typing sessions due on Friday.
As we have missed class the last two Fridays for school
events, I will check the last two week’s homework on Friday
as well. This month we are working towards a class goal
of having a class lesson average of 22.25 for TTL4 by the
end of October. Our current class average is 20.77.
Math
The Section Two test is scheduled for Tuesday,
October 11th. Students should study for Monday night’s
homework. This week, students will learn about adding
and subtracting fractions with common denominators,
adding and subtracting mixed numbers, writing division
answers as mixed numbers, and multiples. We will also
discuss using manipulatives to help simplify fractions.
Since we are in the review portion on the year, we will
occasionally complete two lessons per day. Please help
your child remember labels when necessary.

Social Studies
Students are working in small groups on putting
together presentations about the Mayans, Aztecs, and Incas.
Throughout the week, students will be presenting their
selected civilizations and comparing and contrasting them.
This information will assist students with their third person
informative summaries as well.
Study Skills
This week, students are being asked to complete the
first two sections of the Secret Garden for book groups.
Our book groups will meet on Tuesday, and again on
Thursday. The reading schedule is designed and intended
for students to read each evening. In class, we will be
discussing the importance of planning ahead so the
workload is not too heavy the night before our scheduled
meeting times.

The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the

The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench, the hatter singing

The wood-cutter’s song, the ploughboy’s on his way in the

The delicious singing of the mother, or of the young wife at
work, or of the girl sewing or washing,
Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else,
The day what belongs to the day—at night the party of young
fellows, robust, friendly,
Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs.
