Elementary Schools Schools Elementary Building Relationships in Times of Crisis HELP FOR HAITI Students, teachers work together for a good cause After hearing the news about the major earthquake that recently struck southern Haiti, employees and students made a decision to help raise funds in the worldwide effort to provide relief to Haiti. Here is what some CFISD schools are doing to contribute: Bang ES: The Bang Student Council organized a Penny Drive to help with the recovery in Haiti. So far students have raised approximately $600. The drive will continue until Feb. 1. Farney ES: Farney pulled the Miracle Jar out of the closet and put it to work again collecting cash donations for their friends in Haiti. Farney’s Student Council sponsored a drive and more than $1,300 was collected to send to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund. Hancock ES: Hancock’s Student Council started the “Hancock Helps Haiti” coin drive on Jan. 25 and will run through Feb. 26. Coins are being collected during lunches. All proceeds will go directly to the Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund. Jowell ES: Jowell’s Student Council has sponsored a “Pennies for Haiti” fund raiser to collect donations for the American Red Cross. So far they have collected over $1,000. Horne ES: Each year the Kindergarten students celebrate the 100 day of school with a small celebration. However, in light of the recent events in Haiti, Horne is hoping to make the 100th day of school something more special by helping all students gather donations for the American Red Cross. The goal is for the PreK/ PPCD and LIFE Skills students to collect 100 pennies, kindergarten to collect 100 nickels, first grade to collect 100 nickels, second grade to collect 100 dimes, third grade to collect 100 dimes, fourth grade to collect 100 quarters and fifth grade to collect 100 quarters. Students and their families may opt to send more money. However, the designated number allots for students who are unable to participate. If the goal is met, then Horne students will have collected almost $100 for the American Red Cross. Staff members will also participate in this effort. Millsap ES: The Millsap Student Council sponsored a Penny Drive for the citizens of Haiti to purchase supplies such as bottled water and personal hygiene items for those in need. Q&A (From the Office of CFISD’s Legal Counsel) Q: Are there any legal concerns as campuses gather relief supplies and funds for the earthquake victims of Haiti? A: Campuses can do service projects. During the holidays, many campuses hold food, clothing and toy drives for local missions. At secondary level, student groups often have service projects where they collect donations for a charity. However, CFISD does not allow third parties to use our facilities for fundraising purposes, but schools and schoolrelated groups can do so.
