Greek GPA Analysis - Rensselaer Alumni Association

Institutional Research Brief – Greek Graduation Rate and GPA Analysis
Purpose
At the request of the Dean of Students Office (DOSO), the Office of Institutional
Research (OIR) conducted an analysis of graduation data of Rensselaer’s Greek student
population. OIR addressed several research questions:
•
•
•
•
•
•
What is the graduation rate for Greek students at Rensselaer after four, five, and
six years for the fall 1999 freshman cohort and for the fall 2000 freshman cohort?
How does this graduation rate compare to that of non-Greek students?
What are the descriptive cumulative GPA statistics associated with the graduating
Rensselaer Greek student population (i.e., mean GPA, median GPA, etc)?
How do these data compare with data for the graduating Rensselaer non-Greek
student population?
Is there a gender difference across these data for both Greek and non-Greek
students?
Is the difference between each of these groups statistically significant?
Methodology
To accomplish this analysis, OIR extracted data from the Institute’s Banner system
regarding the following characteristics:
•
•
•
•
Fall 1999 freshman cohort; data were extracted and analyzed for students from
this cohort who graduated after six years (n=1,076), as of August 31, 2005.
Fall 2000 freshman cohort; data were extracted and analyzed for students from
this cohort who graduated after five years (n=1,059), as of August 31, 2005.
Each group was identified as being Greek or non-Greek by a file provided by the
Registrar which identified each student from the cohort along with their respective
Greek affiliation.
The cumulative GPA of each cohort was divided into groups: Greek/non-Greek;
male Greek/male non-Greek; and female Greek/female non-Greek.
Synopsis of Findings
•
•
•
•
•
The graduation rate for Rensselaer Greek students is higher than the rate for
Rensselaer non-Greek students at each measurement point, four, five, and six
years, for both the 1999 and the 2000 cohort.
The cumulative GPA for Rensselaer Greek graduates is consistently lower than the
rate for Rensselaer non-Greek graduates for both the 1999 and the 2000 cohorts
and for both men and women Greek and non-Greek students.
The difference in graduating students’ average GPA for Greek and non-Greek
students for both 1999 and 2000 is statistically significant.
The charts on page two summarize data graphically for the first two bullets above.
The remaining charts throughout this IR Brief provide a detailed description of
data for both 1999 and 2000, for men and women, and for Greek and non-Greek.

The skewness for a normal distribution is zero, and any symmetric data should have a skewness near zero.
Negative values for skewness indicate data that are skewed left and positive values for skewness indicate
data that are skewed right. By skewed left, the left tail is long relative to the right tail; similarly, skewed
right means that the right tail is long relative to the left tail. In our data, non-Greek students’ skewness is
more negative than the Greek students and, therefore, the distribution is skewed left. Distributions for both
groups are on the following page.
