GRADE 6
Spanish Language Arts
This month students will study myths and legends.
Students will learn about some myths and legends
around the world and from some Spanish
speaking cultures. Students will work on their
presentation skills in Spanish. Students will also
continue working on orthography; words with
tildes. This month we started and will continue
working on Spanish through songs.
Students will continue working on the different
activities that enhance reading, comprehension,
presentation, and inferring skills.
Matemáticas
What is happening? News Articles
RazKids
Students will continue reading non-fiction texts in
Spanish. This month we will begin writing either
summaries or Reading Response papers in
Spanish.
English Language Arts
Students have been learning about the elements
of a newspaper article and writing their own
articles to sharpen their visual and written
communication skills. Students will be writing
about their own experiences and/or events in our
school and/or community.
Daily 5/Cinco Cotidiano. We will continue with our
bilingual literacy program. This month we will
begin our novel study. During our novel study,
students will work on Daily 5 CAFÉ strategies of
comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and vocabulary
as well as the literary devices they have been
learning.
This month we will start our unit of Patterns and
Relations. However, students will continue learning and
working on the uses of appropriate mental math
strategies to solve problems.
Mathletics
Since last month, students are using Mathletics as part
of their math learning program at school. Students are
expected to practice topics learned in class on a daily
basis. The extra practice at home can make a big
difference in their math skills. Students have their own
user name and password card on their agendas.
Social Studies
This month we will continue reading the monthly
current events magazine “What in the World?”
This month students will continue learning about the
importance of our rights and freedoms in a democracy
and how active citizens bring about change and begin

exploring the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Throughout the year, we will be referring back to the
four pillars of democracy. This month students will
learn about the values and beliefs that shaped
democracy in Athens. Students will explore the
structure and functions of the democratic system in
ancient Athens and how this model of democracy
influenced our Canadian democracy.
Science
This month we start our new unit: Sky Science. Students
will learn about the objects in the day and night sky.
They will also study the characteristics of stars, moons,
and planets. Students will use their observation skills to
describe and interpret patterns in our sky, nature, and
seasons.

Religion
This month and throughout the year, students will
continue to reflect, act on, and uphold the symbolic
meaning of Lantern as the Grade 6 symbol of moral life.
Students will keep on learning how their actions and
words can be a light to others. This month students will
learn about Moses as light and prophet of God and to
explore the image of God as liberator.
