resist the Germans and lead the French by chanting over the German officers at
his Cafe, risking his business, Rick begins to wear black suites. In the final scene
when Rick demands Captain Renault to sign Victor and Ilsa's visas, Rick is again
wearing black resembling his change in stature becoming a more political figure,
where as Victor is still in a white suite. Victor's continuance to wear white
correlates with how Victor has always been a French resistance leader. Along
with the change in his political leadership, Rick revolves as a man throughout the
movie and becomes more in tune with his feelings for Ilsa.
2) tn the film Casablanca, (Michael Cvrttz-, 1942) Dooley Wilson who plays Sam is
portrayed as a very accommodating person who knows Rick and Ilsa's past. Sam
acts like he doesn't remember "the" song Ilsa asks him to play because he knows
it will upset Rick, however Sam eventually and regretfully gives into her wish.
While Sam is playing the song, the lighting is very dim on Sam where as the
lighting is much brighter on Ilsa representing Sam as a lesser importance. Peter
Lorre plays Ugarte as a slimy nervous businessman. When the camera is on
Ugart, his hair is greased back and his forehead is sweaty and shinny portraying
that he is nervous. Ugarte says to Rick, "You know, Rick, I have many a friend in
Casablanca, but somehow, just because you despise me, you are the only one I
trusf' this dialog from Casablanca confirms that Ugarte knows Rick doesn't like
him and even with this knowledge Ugarte still makes a business deal with Rick.
3) In one of the final scenesin Casablanca, Rick is saying good-bye to Ilsa. The
camera goes from close ups of Rick and then Ilsa and then as Captain Louis
Renault is answering Rick's statement the camera goes into a long shot of all
three characters. The camera zooms in for a close up with bright lighting on Rick

most memorable lines because shows
remember their romance. The camera comes to a close up of Rick's hand gently
touching Ilsa's face while say his most famous line, "Here's looking at you, kid."
The close up shot allows the audience to see Ilsa's reaction to loosing Rick as a
very close lover and friend. Rick then tells Victor what happened between him
and Ilsa making Rick a noble person. With tears in her eyes, Ilsa and Victor turn
into the distance of fog in a long frame as Rick watches them leave. The fog gives
the scene a gloomy ending with Victor and Ilsa leaving.
4) As stated in the Barsam glossary, explicit meaning is "everything that a movie
presents on its surface." (Pg5 8) It's an easy to follow theme that a person can
relate to the story. Whereas Ideological meaning relates to reasons the fitnmaker,
consciously or unconsciously, showed the story according to "real conditions"
(Louis Althusser). As show inCasablanca, WWII had a great impact on howthe
movie was set up in relation to politics on set. An example of this political strain
was when the Germans and French chanted their national songs against eaclr other
in Rick's Cafe.
