ISIDORO FALCHI CIVIC ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
GROSSETO E LA PIANURA - CASTIGLIONE DELLA PESCAIA
Vetulonia, Piazza Vetluna - Castiglione della Pescaia
the museum
The museum is divided into seven rooms. Room A is dedicated to the figure of Isidoro Falchi and his
excavations and displays funerary objects with ossuaries and hut-shaped urns from the necropolises
of Poggio alla Guardia and Poggio Belvedere of the Villanova age (ninth to eighth century BC). In
the Orientalizing style (end of the eighth to seventh century BC) are the funerary objects of the
"Circle of Little Silver Lions", the "Golden Fibula" and the "Foreigner's Treasure", with many precious
and important items. Of the same period is the famous stone stele of the warrior Auvile Feluske. The
exhibition continues into Room B with funerary objects of "I Circolo delle Pellicce", or "The Circle of
Fur" and examination of the monumental tomb of the "Diavolino II", or "Little Devil II". Also displayed
is jewellery from the Lancetti collection and an alphabet engraved on stone, from Dupiane. The last
two rooms of the same floor are dedicated to the local area, with finds from the burial mound of
Poggio Pelliccia (mid-seventh to mid-fifth century BC), the monumental tomb of an aristocratic family
(Room C) and some funerary objects from the necropolis of Val Berretta (seventh to fourth century
BC, Room D). Rooms E-G downstairs are dedicated to the Hellenistic and Roman age with finds
from Costa Murata and Poggiarello Renzetti (among which is particularly notable the architectural
terracotta that decorated the porch of the so-called "House of Medea") as well as funeral and votive
offerings of the period. The museum is a natural complement to the archaeological remains outside
that follow a path from the town centre, where medieval buildings were built on Etruscan defensive
walls, to the living quarters (Costa Murata, Poggiarello Renzetti) and, further downhill, the
necropolises. In the educational room there is a small collection of books on the Etruscan and
Villanova periods. These volumes may be freely consulted at the museum during opening hours.
Guided tours for small groups through the museum and a series of educational workshops may be
reserved by calling the museum.
