The teacher will explain that the students are now going to take part in writing an article that will convince 1800’s Europeans to travel to far away lands. The teacher will start by projecting a world map on the board. Then, the teacher will guide the students through locating the geographical areas listed below. This will serve the purpose of speeding along the following activities, as well as giving the students a refresher on geography, so that they can make an informed decision on which territory they would like to research. The Teacher will break the students up into groups of 3-4 depending on class size. The Groups will then take turns choosing an area of the world to research. The Countries represented should be as follows. (It is perfectly fine if not all countries/ territories are used.) Within these 10 minutes, the group should find the following information on their territory. Geographical Location Climate Major Exports Population Density Main Occupation (nomadic, farmers, etc) Major Cities Natural Wonders located within the country or it’s surrounding area. The students do not need to document this information within these 10 minutes, but simply locate where in the book the information is held so that the next part of the activity can go more smoothly. Once the 10 minute period is up, or when all groups have found the necessary information, the teacher should move on to the next phase of the activity. Objective: The Students will locate significant areas of Asia and Africa on a World Map.
