Minibeasts: Ladybird
First Fabulous Facts
Minibeasts might be small
but they’re some of our
most fascinating creatures and they can pop up in the
most unexpected places.
To celebrate them, children from Dawlish
and Teignmouth have made minibeasts from
recycled plastic and put them on planters at local
railway stations.
You can find a butterfly, dragonfly, bee, ladybird
and snail on planters at some of our stations on
the Riviera Line. They are at Dawlish, Teignmouth,
Newton Abbot, Torquay and Paignton stations.
Thanks to children from Gatehouse Primary School,
Dawlish and Sure Start Dad’s Club Stay and Play,
Teignmouth who made the Minibeasts with artist
Melissa Muldoon.
Spotlight on the Beasts
Taking the train
Butterfly There are 59 species
Have a great day out on the Riviera Line – go to
the beach, go shopping or visit your friends and
family. The line goes from Exeter to Paignton
and stops at the seaside resorts of Dawlish,
Teignmouth, Torquay and Paignton.
Where will you go this summer?
of butterfly in Britain. They start off
as eggs, then caterpillars before
becoming butterflies. Some
fast-flying skipper butterflies can
fly 30 miles per hour or faster.
Dragonfly The dragonfly is best
known for its beautiful colours
and the way its body and wings
sparkle when the dragonfly is
flying over the water. They can
fly upward, downward, forward,
back and side to side.
Bee Bees are the only insect in
the world that make food that
people can eat. They feed on
flowers’ nectar and pollen and
pollinate the flowers at the
same time.
Snail The common garden
snail is the slowest moving
animal. Snails are vegetarians,
they will eat lots of different
plants – meaning that gardeners
sometimes see them as a pest.
They have a great sense of smell,
that’s how they find their food.
Ladybird Ladybirds are yellow,
orange, or scarlet with small
black spots on their wing covers,
with black legs, head and
antennae. They feed on greenfly
who eat garden plants.
Keep safe at the
Railway Station
Railway stations can be very dangerous places
if you misbehave so always be on your best
behaviour. When you are waiting for a train at the
station you have to wait behind the yellow line
on the platform. If a train is coming through the
station and it is not stopping, it will be travelling
very fast so you need to stand well back from the
edge of the platform.
