Millon Dollar Quartet
WELCOME TO OUR 70TH SEASON
June 20 – July 1
Opening night, June 30, 1947, the Playhouse was ablaze with colorful lights. Flashy king-size
cars pulled into the parking area on the lawn while excited theatergoers in evening dress
mingled on the grand porch of Austin Hall anxiously awaiting the Playhouse’s premiere
performance. As the show ended and the curtain came down, five-hundred first-nighters rose
to their feet and applauded for a dozen curtain calls, and so a Vermont tradition was born.
Miracle on South
Division Street
During the following years the Playhouse grew and enjoyed decades of successful summer
theater seasons until in 1970 the wooden building that housed the Playhouse burned to the
ground. All might have been lost had it not been for Michael and Margaret McCarthy, two
major financial contributors to the college, deciding to fund a new theater as a permanent
home for the Playhouse. And in 1975, the Playhouse celebrated a grand-reopening in one of
the finest theater facilities in the state of Vermont, the McCarthy Arts Center Theater.
July 5 – 15
Now, hundreds of productions and more than a million audience members later,
Saint Michael’s Playhouse is bigger and stronger than ever as actors from Broadway,
Off-Broadway, and regional theaters, along with a stellar pool of professional actors
from the Greater Burlington area, continue to share their talents with Greater Burlington
residents and visitors.
Murder for Two
July 19 – 29
We are proud to celebrate our 70th Anniversary with you and offer our deepest gratitude to
you, our audience members, our financial contributors, our production sponsors, our program
advertisers, and to Saint Michael’s College for making this professional theater possible.
You Can’t Take
it With You
This summer, treat yourselves to four wonderful summer evenings at the theater. Impress
a date with your cultural savvy. Share memorable experiences with your friends. Bring the
kids and spark their creativity with a dose of live professional theater.

Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins
EVENINGS: 8:00 p.m. June 20 – 24, June 27 – July 1
MATINEES: 2:00 p.m. June 24 & July 1
Million Dollar Quartet is the high voltage, Tony® Award-winning
Broadway musical inspired by the true story of the famed recording

Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins played

you inside the Sun Records recording studio with these four iconic
legends and brings to light a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of four
friends that is both poignant and heartwarming.
Relive the era with the show’s incredible score of rock ‘n’ roll, gospel,
R&B and country hits. Showcased hit songs include everything
from “Blue Suede Shoes,” and “Walk the Line”, to “Ghost Riders”,
“Sixteen Tons”, “Great Balls of Fire”, “Folsom Prison Blues”, “Fever”,
“Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On”, “Hound Dog”, and more.

appeared to Grandpa in his barbershop.
Since then, the neighborhood has looked upon the Nowaks’
20-foot commemorative shrine as a beacon of hope. And now
daughter Ruth unveils her plan to write and star in a one-woman
show about the family miracle so the “whole world will know.”
However, as her plans unfold, comic twists and turns reveal

HILARIOUS MUSICAL WHODUNIT
Murder for Two
Book and Lyrics by Kellen Blair
Book and Music by Joe Kinosian
Directed by Jeremy Scott Lapp
EVENINGS: 8:00 p.m. July 19 – 22, 25 – 29
MATINEES: 2:00 p.m. July 22 & 29
The hilarious musical Whodunit. Two actors play thirteen roles,
not to mention the piano, in this wild-and-witty homage to oldfashioned murder mysteries. Mixing classic musical comedy
with a dash of Agatha Christie, everyone is a suspect in this
madcap mystery.
Murder for Two had its World Premiere at Chicago Shakespeare
Theater, which was extended four times and ran for more than
six months. Its writers Joe Kinosian and Kellen Blair were
recognized with a Joseph Jefferson Award for Best New
Musical. Murder for Two opened in New York City at Second
Stage Theatre and was extended twice due to popular demand.
Don’t miss the area premiere of this knock-out hit.

You Can’t Take it With You
By Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman
Directed by Catherine Doherty
EVENINGS: 8:00 p.m. August 2 – 5, 8 – 12
MATINEES: 2:00 p.m. August 5 & 12
Meet the gloriously madcap Sycamore’s and enjoy the mayhem
that ensues when their daughter’s fiancé arrives with his straight
laced, conservative parents for dinner on the wrong evening.
The original Broadway production of You Can’t Take It With You
opened at the Booth Theatre on December 14, 1936 and played
for 837 performances. The play won the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for
Drama. The recent Broadway revival, which was extended by
nearly two months, opened September 28, 2014 at Broadway’s
Longacre Theatre.
Everyone has family, but none quite like the Sycamores. Their
zany antics and unconventional ways offer hope that love and
laughter lead to happiness, even in the most troubling of times.
An evening of screwball magic!

SPONSOR A SEAT AND SUPPORT THE PLAYHOUSE
We now have new, quiet and comfortable theater seating … and a continued
opportunity for you to be a part of the Playhouse by naming a seat!
As an auxiliary enterprise of Saint Michael’s College, we rely on the support of
our friends, patrons and sponsors. Ticket sales earn a large portion of our budget,
nearly 70% (an outstanding achievement for any non-profit performing arts
organization), but the remaining 30% must come from contributions.
Help Saint Michael’s College bridge the gap between Playhouse operating costs
and ticket revenue with a tax-deductible contribution. When you give $500 or
more, you can leave a lasting imprint by naming one of our new theater seats.
If you would like to sponsor a seat, please contact Chuck Tobin at 802.654.2617
or [email protected].
