We are very excited to be working with The Roald Dahl Literary Estate this year to celebrate Roald Dahl 100.
The Big Friendly Read, Summer Reading Challenge 2016 features some of Roald Dahl’s best-loved characters
and the amazing artwork of his principal illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake.
The Big Friendly Read will encourage reading on a giant scale. Each child’s collector folder will enhance their
reading experiences by highlighting themes such as invention, mischief and friendship all of which are explored
in Roald Dahl’s most famous books. Children will be encouraged to expand their own reading by exploring
similar themes, fantastic facts, characters and stories across the best contemporary children’s writing.
The Big Friendly Read Website and App
The children’s website URL for 2016 is www.bigfriendlyread.org.uk, although children can also access the site
using the year-round URL www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk. Once on the website, children can create a
personal profile and add books they’ve read to the Book Sorter. Once again we’re working with SOLUS to
create an interactive App to enhance the Challenge and Book Sorter.

We’ve changed the format
this year in consultation with
the library sector. Instead of
a large fold out poster with
scratch and sniff stickers,
we’re reinvigorating a previous
Summer Reading Challenge
format based on a long seven
panel concertina fold-up card wallet, into which children can slot six limited edition
Quentin Blake collector cards, each celebrating a popular Dahl theme: Mischief, Invention,
Adventure, Wordplay, Child Champions, and Friendship.
Scratch and Sniff inks are included on 3 of the collector cards. The card images will also
trigger content when using the Summer Reading Challenge App developed by SOLUS.
As usual, there will be activities and space on the collector folder for children to keep track of their
progress and rate the books they’ve read. The collector folder is easy to fold up and transport.

Each year The Reading Agency asks all Summer Reading Challenge Co-ordinators to submit an online evaluation form.
The results of the evaluation form, along with the sales figures for each promotional item, help us to decide the items
we produce for the following Summer Reading Challenge. The promotional items below remain popular with children

Pre-school Incentive
Feedback is mixed about certificates for this group – some say the children want the same certificate
(item 6) as older siblings, but others asked about a suitable pre-school completion incentive.
The medals, key tags, wristbands and rainbow glasses are not suitable for under threes
(European toy standard guidelines). Last year we provided a pop-out mobile shown here.
The mobiles are 155mm in diameter and pop out to create a 3-D effect, with a hole for threading cotton.

Materials for Children with Visual Impairment (VI)
Previously we have been able to produce supersize materials to help VI children experience the Summer Reading
Challenge. RNIB have subsidised these resources. Initially, these resources were popular and families reported the
benefits of the materials. However in recent years authorities haven’t been ordering as many VI materials and this
makes the offer less cost effective and the availability throughout the UK patchy.
Looking ahead, we are discussing other approaches with RNIB around the best use of resources. The core activity
of the Challenge is choosing and reading books in all formats and the free RNIB Talking Books loans service
www.rnib.org.uk/books, and partnership working through Share the Vision www.share-the-vision.org.uk support this.
We are looking at which materials to produce to complement the Challenge, so for this item, we are asking you to
submit a note of interest to determine the level of interest in maintaining a print offer with similar materials at a
similar cost to previous years e.g. £13 for 20 children.
Once we have indications of interest and we have discussed further
with RNIB, we will send round description and supplementary order information.

READING HACK YOUNG VOLUNTEER MATERIALS
Last year over 9,300 volunteers helped to make the Challenge a roaring success. Young volunteers
for 2016 will be Reading Hack volunteers for the Summer Reading Challenge and will have free
access to competitions, skills advocacy and certificates from readinghack.org.uk. You can find out
more about Reading Hack at readingagency.org.uk/young-people
The Cabinet Office Social Action Fund and Accelerated Scaling Fund grants have paid for summer volunteer packs for the
past four years. This funding has now come to an end and this year items are available for all authorities to buy in UK and
Eire. We will also provide free downloadable resources so you can maintain a strong volunteer offer.
All Welsh authorities will be sent information separately about the bilingual Reading Hack materials produced with support
from the Welsh Government.

This year, the Reading Hack recruitment postcards will be delivered at the same time as the Summer Reading Challenge
