A Grand weekend in Grabow
We were invited to Grabow to the opening of the Schützenhaus, a beautifully renovated imposing building in a large area of park. A wedding was taking place there on the Saturday.
Our Chairman Graham and his wife Lisa were making a holiday in north Germany at the same
time so would be in the area with their own car. We flew from Gatwick to Hamburg on Thursday and
were picked up by our hosts, Gerhard and Gerlinda Geick, for, as it turned out, an interesting journey.
The only autobahn was blocked by an overturned car transporter so we were diverted to the countryside
roads for many miles. Slow, but nevertheless interesting.
On arrival at Barlow, our “home village,” we had next to no time to change and get to the dinner
at the Schützenhaus. With minutes to spare, we made it, all dressed up and ready. Everyone was greeted

In spite of over fifty local organisations being approached,
this year’s Clubs and Associations Fair, held in the grounds of St.
Alphege Church at the end of September, attracted only eleven
‘stallholders’. In spite of that, many of those taking part said the
event was enjoyable and hoped it would continue. That remains to
be seen.
Because I am standing down from the organiser’s role, WTA
will have to decide whether it wishes to continue running the event
or perhaps pass it over to another organisation and simply join in
as a ‘stallholder’. Two organisations have expressed an interest.
This year’s event was again blessed with good weather (the
Rev Rachel Webbley said she prayed hard for sunshine) and many
passers-by stopped to be entertained by Dead Horse Morris, the
Lindley Players and a small group from Phoenix Performing arts.
Unfortunately, too few of those passing actually came to see what
the event was about, although there were plenty of customers for
the coffee morning and bric-a-brac sale, which, combined, made
for a good contribution towards WTA funds.

Impressive tributes as Rolf
Lührmann retires
On Friday September 25 there was an official retirement
celebration for Rolf Lührmann in the Vennehof in Borken.
As Bürgermeister, Rolf has always been a big supporter of twinning
and under his guidance, with the support of the council and administration, Borken has won international recognition for its work in this
field.
This was both an official farewell and ‘thank you’. It started
with informal drinks and a chance for a brief personal word from the
guests. As so many people wished to make their thanks known, this
went on for some time. Afterwards there were musical items, personal reminiscences and official thanks and congratulations. These
finished some four hours later when
The buffet was served. The sheer
number of contributors is testament to
the esteem in which Rolf is held.
We certainly hope to see Rolf
in Whitstable in the future and wish
him and his wife a very happy and no
doubt still busy retirement.

at the door by the new Mayor, Stefan, his wife and the host party from the Schützenhaus organization. Guests were greeted with champagne and canapes in the banqueting hall. What a
grand sight. With large round tables set out, we were seated with people from the Schützenhaus, the
Partnerscaftsverein and our friends Ulli Schult and his wife.
Service was buffet style, and what style! With so much to choose from, nobody could go hungry
here, with wine served at the table by attentive staff.
Of course, then followed the speeches. From the Mayor and the county of Mecklenburg, the
Chairman of the Schützenhaus and the head of the town services department. Nobody was left unthanked or un-congratulated. Then there was dancing. At the end of the evening there was a gift bag for
every guest, Grabower Küsschen included.
Friday, bright and early we were off to Schwerin to visit the theatre for a guided tour, both behind the scenes and in front of house. We were told of the history and the workings of this very grand
place overlooking the Schloss and the beautiful lake beyond. At that time our Chairman and his wife
caught us up. A lunch invitation followed in the castle restaurant. Later Sylvia and I had “coffee and
cake” at the very historic “Café Prag”, the history of which was explained by Eduard Doefler who used
it in his student days. In the evening the Fire Brigade held a barbeque for all guests and their hosts.
Saturday: the grand “Open Day” at the Schützenhaus. Beginning with a grand parade, it
seemed like the whole town had turned out, and
us. Whitstable carnival please take note. The parade wound its way to the new Schützenhaus to
join the party. Inside was a “pop up” museum
with many displays of the taxidermists art. Outside in the grounds were tents and displays from
all clubs and associations to show what they did
and sell items to raise funds.
The main marquee was set out with many
tables and benches in front of a large stage for
displays of dancing by cheerleaders and disco,
then live bands during the evening. Conversation
between us, the more mature generation, was by
writing notes and passing across the table. As the
evening drew on there was a spectacular firework
display. I am sure there were more people there
than the whole population of Grabow. Who is to
say? It was dark, and very loud!
Sunday began with a
farewell breakfast invitation provided by members of the Partnerschaftsverein, once more
at the Fire Station.
A special thank you to
all our friends in Grabow
for a wonderful weekend, for their hard work
and organisation, but
above all for their
warmth and friendship.
Friends from the twinned towns enjoyed the parade.
Graham Nicholson adds:- The Schützenhaus will become an important venue for future social
events in Grabow as well as providing the home for the Schützenfest activities. The building has a
large number rooms of different sizes, making it perfect for many different events and activities.
We wish the people of Grabow every success with their new wonderful venue.

the twin towns. Each town gave a brief presentaon about
their town and gave out informaon and leaflets to interested pares. Although the take up by associaons was
disappoinng, those that came were very interested.

Everyone who a$ended on Friday night voted for their favourite photo. The compeon was very close. In the
end over half of the photos a$racted at least one vote and the result was that a landscape photo from Borken
came third, a deligh(ul photo from Říčany of a young arst at
ǁŽƌŬĐĂŵĞƐĞĐŽŶĚĂŶĚƚŚĞǁŝŶŶŝŶŐƉŚŽƚŽǁĂƐĨƌŽŵƌŝŶ

We have always tried to host people in families but are there other ways of hosng? Young people and schools
are the future. Many students remember exchange visits years later and oen say that they have had an ŝŵƉŽƌƚĂŶƚƉĂƌƚƚŽƉůĂLJŝŶƚŚĞŝƌĚĞǀĞůŽƉŵĞŶƚ͘tŚĞŶĐŽŵŝŶŐƚŽƚŚĞĐŽŶĨĞƌĞŶĐĞĞŶƐƵƌĞLJŽƵŚĂǀĞƚŚĞĚĂƚĞƐĂŶĚ

English tea goes down well in Borken
In early September a group of six WTA
members headed for Borken. We had been
asked to provide an ‘English Tea’ at the
Stadtfest for members of the Borken group
and were also being given the
opportunity to say ‘goodbye’ to Rolf Lührmann whose tenure as Mayor of Borken was
coming to an end.
We drove across Europe with a car
full of scones, jam, cream and cucumbers,
arriving in Borken to be greeted by our
hosts. We spent a lovely evening catching
up with all of the news and then getting a
good night’s sleep before the preparation
that would be required the next morning.
On Saturday whilst members of the
WTA were getting involved in events around
the town including a church service,
Stephen and I, helped by our host Heike,
whipped cream, buttered scones and made dozens of cucumber sandwiches!
At 1 o’clock we transported the ‘goodies’ to the venue where the Twinning Members from Poland were
serving Bigos (a Polish cabbage and meat stew) washed down with a little lemon vodka. When lunch was over we
all took part in a guided tour of the town. The weather was a bit drizzly but we had hoods and umbrellas. The tour
was very interesting and I for one saw elements of the town that were completely new to me. After the tour ‘we
were on’!
We provided pots and pots of ‘English’ tea to wash down the sandwiches and scones. It was all hands on
deck. We did worry at one point that we would not be able to keep up with the demand for cups of tea, but the
WTA team did a grand job. Everyone had a lovely time and there was no waste at all, although everyone seemed
to have enough to eat.
After clearing away and going back to our hosts to change, we were all invited to the Hotel Haus Fliederbusch. The evening was in honour of Rolf and was very enjoyable. On behalf of WTA Gillian made a heartfelt
speech thanking Rolf for all of his support over the years and presented him with a pair of cufflinks shaped like
oyster shells with a pearl in each.
It was a really charming weekend with lots of smiles and laughter. I am not sure if cucumber sandwiches
will ever really catch on in Borken, but we gave it a go!

Georgina MacKinnon writes about their “unforgettable” visit to Říčany
In August this year we were very lucky to be the first dancers
from Whitstable to be invited to Říčany by the twinning association.
The people were the most welcoming I have ever met and made it a
time never to forget.
The experiences we had while visiting the Czech Republic
were unforgettable and the hospitality of the people who looked
after us made it even more special. Being looked after by these
amazing people meant that we were able to experience the culture,
food and history of the country as well as doing something we all
love best; dancing!
We were lucky enough to go to a jazz festival, visit their
beautiful city, Prague, join in many dance workshops and perform
along with many talented people. We met two wonderful people,
Jana and Tereza, who looked after us and made sure that we had the
best stay possible, and they were very successful! I couldn’t thank
them enough for everything they did for us and we would never
have been able to experience what we did without them.
We also had the pleasure to meet the Mayor and have dinner
with him which was an incredible opportunity for us all. Over the
few days we were there I made some wonderful friends while also
experiencing everything the twinning association set up for us.

“Be at the Mairie at 10.00am promptly” had been my instructions,
and so I was, having travelled across the night before, only to find I was
the sole Whitstable representative in Dainville.
There had been problems at the Tunnel and there were considerable
delays, leaving the Mayoral car waiting back in England.
Along with Dainville’s Mayor, Françoise Rossignol, and councillors, I walked up the Ecole Montesquieu where the children sang to a large group of Dainville twinners, the
Mairie group and me! They sang a pop song in English very well. Then, to our
total surprise, Beatrice Briard and I were presented with Dainville Medals for
service to the town. What an honour,
Fortunately, the Mayor of Canterbury’s delayed group including Graham
Nicholson and Glynis Morgan arrived in time for the official unveiling of the
name plaques: “Rue de Whitstable and Rue de Canterbury”.
A delightful touch was a local bus which revolved the names of
Whitstable, Dainville and Canterbury on its destination sign.

On October 3 Dainville officially opened two streets with
unusual names, not only Rue de Whitstable but also Rue de Canterbury.
The Lord Mayor of Canterbury, Councillor Sally Waters, had kindly
agreed to come and join in the official celebrations. Unfortunately, owing
to problems at Eurotunnel, although we arrived we were too late for the
official ceremony. We did, however, visit both streets with Mayor
Françoise Rossignol and we had a really good day in unseasonably fine
weather.
As part of the official opening, the children of Ecole Montesquieu had
prepared a song to sing to the Lord Mayor, which she missed. Luckily
they were coming to Whitstable just over a week later, leading to a second
part of the celebration.
On Friday October 16 children from the Ecole Motesquieu spent the day
with children from Joy Lane Junior School. The weather was not as kind
as it had been in France but a brief dry interlude allowed the children
from both schools to meet at the Harbour. The
French children then managed to sing –
unaccompanied – their song to the Lord Mayor.
Many thanks to the RNLI for preparing a
sheltered location in case of a downpour and to
the Lord Mayor for coming to meet with us
twice.
It would be nice if we could also have
streets named after our twin towns in Whitstable.
We have asked in the past and will do so again.

Members of Whitstable Twinning Association once again travelled to Dainville to
commemorate Armistice Day. For Glynis
Morgan, the new leader of the Dainville
Group, this was the first time she laid the
wreath at the London Scottish regiment
cemetery.
The London Scottish Regiment was
billeted in Dainville during the extensive
war effort and in particular the Battle of
Arras in 1915.

Siegbert Hohaus honoured
In March, Siegbert Hohaus stood down as Chairman of the Borkener Partnerschaftsverein. This
marked the end of twenty eight years of service in one capacity or another to twinning between
Whitstable and Borken.
We could not let such an occasion go unnoticed and so Siegbert and his wife Magdalene were
invited to visit Whitstable at the beginning of October. On the Friday evening a dinner was held in his
honour, attended by Past and Present Borken co-ordinators, Sylvia Carter and Janet Lloyd, and ex teachers from the Community College Whitstable – also known as ‘The Nottidge’.
It was a very pleasant evening, with many reminiscences of the early school exchanges, going to
the castle at Eisenach in the East before reunification and stories of staff and pupil activities.
A small presentation was made to Siegbert to thank him for his many years of hard work. We
know that although he has retired Siegbert will still be active and we look forward to meeting up in one

Dainville Group…game for a laugh
The Dainville Group Autumn Social took place on Friday October 16 at the Parish Social Centre.
Despite being a windy, chilly evening, the event was very well attended.
The entertainment this year was a game 'Jeu de cadeaux', as suggested by Chris and Karen Long
from the group. They had played it many times in France.
The game itself consisted of each person bringing along three wrapped presents. Each present
was to cost no more than £1.00 and could be something silly/practical/useful. The presents were then
divided up between the two tables and the game began.
Without giving away too much, let's just say the game involved a great deal of moving, swapping
and even stealing presents from each other. Judging by the sound of laughter ringing around the room
all night, it is safe to say that a good time was had by all.
After the game, guests were treated to a lovely ploughman’s style buffet, masterminded as usual
by the genie of the kitchen, Jean Gambrill, and her merry band of helpers. Ann Moulton and David
Rosenthal were their usual efficient selves in providing all the necessary equipment to make the evening a great success. Well done to the committee and to all the members who attended on the evening.
