Flax, wool and hemp were the most frequented crops available in the region. Flax growing has been an integral part of everyday rural life and it was necessary to grow enough to cover the needs of all the household members. Josef Fidler has been in weaving business for 20 years. His domain is cotton and acrylic hand-woven scarves. The scarves are made from gentle cotton and acrylic yarn that provide demanded softness. He also produces the Linen of Hlinecko – tablecloths, napkins, table settings, dishcloths, curtains and rags. His products are decorated with traditional motives, colours and patterns typical for Hlinecko region. The weaving technique has been kept the same with the use of four-blade weaving loom and cotton and acrylic yarn. He presents his work on fairs in Hlinsko and Veselý Kopec. All the products can be ordered by phone, email, website or personally at Mr. Fidler’s house. Since this June you can come and admire Mr. Fidler’s work in one of the cottages in Betlém. Yarns are wound on a warping machine. Warp length depends on the number of pins. Linen yarn is spun from the long fibers found just behind the bark in the multi-layer stem of the flax plant. Weaving is a method of fabric production in which two distinct sets of yarns or threads are interlaced at right angles to form a fabric or cloth. The method in which these threads are inter woven affects the characteristics of the cloth. It is a time-consuming task so it is recommended to make the threads as long as possible. The cloth is usually woven on a loom, a device that holds the warp threads in place while filling threads are woven through them. The way the warp and filling threads interlace with each other is called the weave. Woven cloth can be plain (in one colour or a simple pattern), or can be woven in decorative or artistic designs. From linen thread or yarn, fine toweling and dress fabrics may be woven. Household linens truly made of linen become more supple and soft to the touch with use; thus, linen was once the bedsheet of choice. After weaving the fabric is removed from the loom, carefully checked, mistakes are repaired, fringing knots are made on the edge to prevent fraying of threads. Scarves are then washed, dried, ironed and ready to make a new owner happy. The catalogue of certified products is issued by LAG Hlinecko in cooperation with the City of Hlinsko
