LAUC‐SD Mentoring Committee November 14, 2007 1:30p‐3:00p BMD Small Conference Room (Room 135) Minutes Attending: Young, Marlo; Smith, Michael; Coppernoll‐Blach, Penny (Recorder); Din, Maria, LHR Liaison; Haynes, Craig, Chair Announcements • Campus Graduate Professional School Visits (SLIS next year, plan this year) ‐ The committee noticed that library/SLIS schools were not represented in the graduate professional school tables on Library Walk this year. There were mainly representatives from law schools and graduate schools. ACTION: Maria will call Career Services to see if they could make contacts with the various library schools, such as UCLA, Arizona, San Jose State University, and CSU Northridge. DISCUSSION Action plan review • Data collection – There was a discussion of the methods of past selection for mentors/mentees, and how many of each category were actually matched in the previous year. ACTION: Craig will follow up with Duffy Tweedy, Past Chair, to see who the 2‐3 mentors/mentees were in the past and how successful the matches were. There may be a need to develop an exit survey. • Fall program: presentation on librarianship for UCSD Career Center – The committee would like to know what resources are already available at the Career Center. Do they want brochures for library schools or library associations? ACTION: Maria will set up a field trip to Career Services for our next meeting in December. • Intern Referrals – Penny brought two recent emails from the SLA‐SD distribution list to the committee. One is from a person considering going to SJSU Library School who would like to talk to various librarians in the field. The second is from a person who would like to volunteer to work on projects in libraries. ACTION: Penny will contact the person wanting to volunteer to see whether he/she is interested in librarianship and what type of library/department. • Roster of UCSD library assistants currently enrolled in SLIS programs – The committee discussed how to gather the roster information and what would be done with this information. ACTION: Maria will contact the LMG committee to see who they know within their libraries are enrolled in library school. Later we may want to contact ALL library staff. • Mentee and Mentor Applications – The committee went over the mentee and mentor forms, with many suggestions for changes and for clarification. ACTION: Mike will revise both forms, incorporating the changes. ACTION: Maria will check the policy on release time for Library Assistants to meet with mentors. She will find out if supervisor’s permission is required and for how many hours. ACTION: Marlo will set up a Gmail account for LAUC‐SD Mentoring Committee to use on these forms. • Website draft and brochure design – The committee looked at a proposed design from Craig for a public webpage. Craig also had a brochure for the committee to review. The brochure needs to be broadened to include all types of libraries. ACTION: Everyone will wordsmith the introduction to the website and look at the other components. Job links need to be added. ACTION: Everyone will review the brochure and send comments to Craig. Meeting adjourned: 3:30pm SUMMARY OF MARIA DIN’S CONVERSATION WITH CAREER SERVICES CENTER STAFF, 12/4/07 Here is a summary of Maria Din’s conversation with Nicole Moran O’Neill (x40157), Assistant Director, Professional & Graduate School Opportunity Program with the Career Services Center: Professional and Graduate School Information Fair: • • Held in the Fall – this year UCLA’s Graduate School of Education & Information Studies attended They do have a list of all library schools, but she did admit that for some reason only 10‐12 were invited to participate this year, but she will be sure to include all in the future; of the number of schools invited, only a small percentage of schools actually attend the Information Fair Brochures/Handouts: Wasn’t too receptive to the idea of being provided with handouts/brochures. She indicated that the majority of students use the website to look up information online. Career Services does have a link for Library and Information Studies which takes them to the ALA page: http://career.ucsd.edu/sa/PSocialSciences.shtml Tour: Would be happy to schedule a tour, but not until February or later as the Center is undergoing major renovations Visit with Advisors: They are still very much interested (have been waiting for us to re‐connect) in meeting with some of our Librarians to discuss the various librarian roles and opportunities. Anytime after the renovation, they would be happy to put us on the agenda when they hold an in‐house development session for their advisors. Craig Schmidt, Assistant Director, Career Development Programs, would be the contact to make the arrangements. Librarian Career Day: They remember the Librarian Career Panel we held in the Seuss Library about 5 years ago and they thought that was a fantastic idea. Career Services video‐taped the event and it is available in their Center’s Resource Library. She again admitted that it’s rarely requested, but could be because students don’t spend that much time in the Center. Perhaps it’s time to update…podcast or web access? Anyway, they would help us advertise and get the word out should we decide to host another career panel. Career Services Center home page: http://career.ucsd.edu/index.shtml
