GLENN HAYS
Robinson also was
tabbed Most Outstanding
Performer at the inaugural
C-USA indoor meet for
throwing NCAA provisional
qualifying marks in both the
shot put and 35 lb. weight.
Hays graduated from
the former Southwestern
College, now Rhodes College, in 1962 and began
coaching cross country at
Battle Ground Academy in
Franklin, Tenn. Three
years later, Hays accepted
the head coaching job at
Valparaiso, where his team
finished among the
NCAA's top-10 three times in just five seasons.
He moved on to Virginia Tech in 1969 before coming to
the Tigers in 1970. Hays finished his Master's degree in physical education at Memphis in 1967.
Lately, Hays has excelled off the track as well, owning and
operating the city's finest French restaurant, La Tourrelle,
located midtown Memphis.
Hays and his wife, Martha, have two daughters, Vanessa,
25, and Sara Ruth, 21.
Head Coach
Rhodes College, 1962
University of Memphis Head Coach Glenn Hays is
well-known throughout the Mid-South and the national track
community for producing top-of-the-line track and field
teams.
Hays, now entering his 33rd season with the Tigers,
has recruited and coached numerous Metro, Great Midwest and Conference USA champions, along with 26 NCAA
participants in 57 different events.
Focusing his efforts mainly on running competitions,
Hays has produced seven All-Americans, six national
champions and one national record holder.
Hays established Memphis' reputation early in his career. After coming to Memphis in 1970, Hays coached his
team to national championships in two events just three
seasons later. Tiger runners took the national title in both
the 440 yard relay (39.6) and the 100 yard dash (Ed
Hammond, 9.4). In 1976, his cross country team captured
the Metro title while pushing David Topham to the individual championship.
Under Hays' tutelage, Terron Wright, the 1981 60meter high hurdle national champion, set a world record
time for the 300 yard dash. In the same year, Nick Brooks
captured the NCAA indoor 880 yard dash runner-up trophy.
Just two seasons later, Hays' Memphis program produced the first mile runner in school history to break the
four-minute barrier. Colin Hume ran the mile in 3:58.59 in
1983.
Since joining Conference USA in the 1995-96 season, the Tigers have not missed a beat. Hays coached 15
individual athletes and seven relay teams to conference
titles, four all conference cross country runners, as well as
numerous Athlete of the Week recipients. Junior Delvit
Rogers became the latest Tiger athlete to accomplish significant marks when he qualified for the NCAA Championships and the U.S. Olympic Trials in the long jump during
the outdoor season in 2000. Rogers shattered the school
record in the long jump while at a meet in Louisiana.
For the fourth year in a row, Memphis produced a
conference Newcomer of the Year in 1996. Tiger
decathlete Kevin O'Connell added the freshman of the year
honor to his resume by finishing 13 points shy of the decathlon title at the inaugural C-USA outdoor championship meet. Former Tigers Lambros Iacovou and Kevin
Robinson set school and conference records, and won their
respective championships while claiming Newcomer of the
Year honors as freshmen.

BRENDA
CALHOUN-CASH
Head Coach
Arizona State, B.A. 1981
Univ. of Iowa, M.A., 1985
When the University of Memphis reinstated its women's track
and field program in 1985 after a three-year hiatus, no better head
coaching candidate could have surfaced than Brenda Calhoun-Cash.
Cash, a native of Hamden, Conn., was hired on Aug. 12, 1985,
as the youngest head coach in U of M history, and has faced many
challenges in rebuilding the Lady Tiger program. Previously, Cash
served as a graduate assistant track coach for the University of Iowa's
nationally-ranked women's team while earning her Master's degree
in physical education.
The team experienced a resurgence in the 1996 season. Cash's
Lady Tigers set school records in 10 events in 1996 and had its first
two NCAA provisional qualifiers in six years. Despite lack of depth at
the distance events, the team placed third in the inaugural C-USA
championship meet.
New school records were set in the indoor 5,000m, distance
medley relay, long jump, shot put and 20 lb. weight throw. Outdoors,
the team set records in the 10,000 meter run, long jump, shot put,
discus and hammer. The trend of improvement and teamwork can be
traced back to the 1994-1995 season, when the team set records in
six events while capturing conference championships in two events.
Her 1992 team won the Great Midwest Conference Outdoor
Championship, earning her GMC Coach of the Year. In 1993, her
squad placed second in the GMC championships and, in 1991, placed
second at the Metro Outdoor Championship, earning Cash her first
coach of the year title.
THE CASH FILE
At Memphis:
•Named Metro Conference Coach of the Year in 1991
•Great Midwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1992
•Coached her teams to a 1992 Great Midwest
Conference Championship, a GMC runner-up finish
in 1993 and a Metro Conference runner-up finish in 1991
At Arizona State:
•Earned All-America honors all four years at Arizona State
•Set school records in the 100m dash and 100m
hurdles, and participated on a national record
setting 4x100m relay team
• Ranked among the top 12 nationally in both the
100m dash and 100m hurdles.
In High School:
•Set Connecticut state records in the 100 yard, 200 yard and
80-yard hurdles
•Advanced to the finals of the AAU junior and senior

Cash
is
no
stranger to success on
the track. She ranked
among the top 12 nationally in both the 100m
dash and the 100m
hurdles from 1976-1981.
In 1976, she was an
Olympic trials semifinalist in the 100m dash.
Her propensity for
speed landed her a
scholarship at Arizona
State, where Cash went
on to earn all-America
honors the next four
years. Cash also set the
Sun Devils' school
records in the 100m dash
and 100m hurdles, along with participating on the 4x100m relay
team that set a national record.
Cash earned her bachelor's degree in broadcasting in 1981.
After graduation, she served as a volunteer coach for the Sun
Devil women's track team, assisting the hurdlers, before heading
to Iowa.
Cash's high school career was also one for the record books,
as Cash set Connecticut high school state records in the 100 yd.,
200 yd. and 80 yd. hurdles. Her name also became known on the
AAU circuit when she made the finals of both the senior and junior
national championships in the 100m, 200m and 100m hurdles. In
1976, Cash was named the National Multiple Sclerosis Society
Outstanding High School Woman Athlete in America.
In the past, Cash has worked at the Memphis All-Sports
Camp. She also participated in the Tennessee SportsFest and is
the record holder in her age group for the 100m hurdles, 100m
dash and triple jump.
Cash is the daughter of former Olympic champion Lee
Calhoun, who struck gold in the 110 yd. high hurdles at both the
1956 and 1960 Olympic games. Over the years the Lady Tigers
have competed in the Lee Calhoun Invitational in Macomb, Ill.,
where Calhoun was head men's coach at Western Illinois University. The meet was first run in 1990.
Cash is married to Joseph Cash. The couple has two daughters, 13-year-old Tiara and nine-year-old Breana-Lee.

About Conference USA
In the world of intercollegiate sports, many considered the formation of Conference USA a bold move. Its formation occurred during a significant period
of major conference realignment and restructuring of the NCAA. C-USA
established a strong foundation while quickly earning a reputation of successfully competing at the highest levels of intercollegiate athletics. Capitalizing on the strengths of its 15 distinguished and diverse universities, Conference USA has quickly emerged as one of the nation’s top conferences.
A PROUD HISTORY
The conference unveiled its name, logo and commissioner on April 24, 1995
in Chicago. Mike Slive was named the first commissioner of Conference
USA. Eleven of the institutions began athletic participation in 1995, while
Houston joined competition in the fall of 1996. The league’s headquarters
were established in Chicago.
PROMISE IN EXPANSION
Conference USA added East Carolina (September, 1996) and the United
States Military Academy (March, 1997) as football members. ECU began
league competition in 1997; Army in 1998 and UAB began football play in
1999. The league added TCU and ECU (1999) for all sports and they began
competition in 2001. South Florida starts C-USA football in 2003.
COMPETITION
Conference USA sponsors 19 sports - baseball, basketball, cross country,
football, golf, soccer, tennis, and track and field (indoor and outdoor) for men
and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track
and field (indoor and outdoor), and volleyball for women. The league’s championship competition is enhanced by NCAA
automatic bids in volleyball, men’s and
women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis and baseball.
Volleyball
·

·
Two Sweet 16 appearances in 1996 and 1998
·
One of four leagues to send at least three teams to the NCAA Championship each of the last four years
·
Five C-USA teams posting 20-win seasons for two consecutive years
In addition, 23 men’s and women’s soccer teams, 19 baseball teams and six softball teams have earned NCAA Tournament bids. C-USA has sent two men’s
soccer teams to the Final Four, one baseball team to the College World Series and
four softball teams to the Women’s College World Series. The league has also
had three national champions in NCAA track and field competition, one national
champion in diving and numerous NCAA individual and team competitors in cross
country, golf, swimming, tennis and track and field. Overall, Conference USA
teams and individuals have made more than 237 NCAA appearances.
SUCCESS OFF THE FIELD
Among C-USA’s 5,000 student-athletes, there are champions off the playing field
as well. In seven years, 62 student-athletes earned national Verizon Academic AllAmerica honors, while 134 were named All-District. In addition, more than 6,000
student-athletes have been named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll or received
the Commissioner’s Academic Medal, indicative of outstanding achievement in
the classroom. The conference annually awards six postgraduate scholarships,
along with the Sport Academic Award, Scholar Athletes of the Year and the Institutional Academic Excellence Award.
CONFERENCE USA ON TV
ESPN, Inc. and C-USA entered into an exclusive
eight-year agreement, beginning with the 2001
season. The multi-faceted agreement, which
incorporates ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Regional
Television, ABC Sports, ESPN.com and ESPN
Classic, is highlighted by: ESPN/ESPN2’s coverage of C-USA football featuring weeknight
games; televising possible future C-USA Football Championship Games on ABC; men’s basketball coverage; syndication and network rights
for the conference’s football and basketball coverage through ERT; continued exposure for
women’s basketball, along with volleyball, baseball, soccer and softball, as well as marketing
rights.
Conference sports compete in a single division, except for men’s basketball, which currently competes in two. Charlotte, Cincinnati,
DePaul, East Carolina, Louisville, Marquette,
and Saint Louis comprise the American Division, while Houston, Memphis, South Florida,
Southern Miss, TCU, Tulane and UAB make
up the National Division.
