chemical changes and properties.
Before You Begin…
Check to see that all the items are present and organized according to the Station Information sheet. If
you notice a problem, notify the teacher immediately.

Activities and Questions
Essential Question
Define the separation of matter on its physical and chemical properties and changes?
Discuss the essential question with your teammate(s) and record your answer in your Interactive
Notebook.
Procedures
Locate the matter flow chart and the envelope with the matter item cards.
1. Create a Matter Organization Chart into your Interactive Notebook.

2. Randomly select a matter item card from the envelope and discuss with your team members
where it would be placed on the matter organization chart.
3. Mark your best educated guess on the Matter Organization Chart with a black pen.
4. Now following the questions found on the flow chart, revisit your answer choices and remark
your new answer using a red pen on the same matter organization chart.
5. When you have completed your activities, place all materials in the appropriate envelopes.
Note – Because other students are going to do the activity after you, be sure to put all the
materials at the station back as you found them. If you need assistance or have any questions,
ask your teacher.
Questions: Record your response in your Interactive Notebook.
Note – Refer to the flow chart or your class notes to answer the following questions.
1. What are intensive and extensive properties?
2. List two examples of extensive and intensive properties and discuss how they can be used to
determine physical or chemical properties/chemical of matter.
3. Which of the matter item cards can be listed in other categories? List and give the reason.
4. Now that you have completed these questions, return to the essential question. Would you
like to modify or change your answer? Write any modifications to your answer below.
