NOV20-30CONTESTWRAPUP–ANNOUNCE&HONOURWINNERS • Seesection3.6ProgrammingIdeasandAwardsCeremonies. 4 3.0TheContest Thefollowingsectionsaddressthevariousaspectsofrunningthecontest,mostlyintheorderthatyou willencounterthem.I’veincludedsomeanecdotalinformationbasedonmyexperiencesrunningthe contestatthePowellRiverPublicLibraryforthreeyears.Idon’texpectthatwhatworksinPowellRiver willworkineverylibrarybutIdohopethesebasicblockswillformasolidfoundationforbuildingthe contestinyourownlibraryandcommunity. 3.1PotentialTargetGroups Thechallengeofwritingatinystoryisarguablyonethatcanbetackledbywritersasyoungas elementaryschool.Aparagraph,afterall,isnotverylong.In2014,PRPLreceivedseveralentriesfroma grade6classandthejudgeswerefacedwiththeconundrumofhowtojudgekidsinthesamecategory asadults.Theycouldn’t.Thequalityofthewritingandthegraspoftheconceptof“story”werevery differentinthekids’stories.Theyweresweetandfunnyanddramaticandbasicallyawesome,but ultimatelytheyneededtobejudgedintheirowncategory.WhenIcreatedaTeencategoryin2015,I hadthisexperienceinmindandIwasalsothinkingabouthowIwouldjudgethesuccessofthecontest.
