Sacred Heart - Saint James Parish
October 26, 2008
30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reverend Paul Ring
My Dear Friends in Christ,
We had a neighbor growing up who we used to call “Mr. Yard”. He earned this nickname by always being out
in his yard – mowing, raking, planting, weeding – undertaking whatever particular task was called for, given
the time of year. This was a noble endeavor, in that he took pride in his yard. Where it became a problem for
us was when that yard work occurred at “inopportune” times (such as mowing at 6 am!). It was then that my
dad had less-than-Christian things to say, during which my mother would rightfully admonish him. It wasn’t
the work to which my father objected; it was just the timing – it was felt that due consideration should be
given to neighbors.
Today’s gospel presents Jesus with a dilemma: if he were to answer the scholar’s question literally, He would
have had to pick a single commandment which stood out over and above the others. Being the true
philosopher He was, however, Jesus shaped the question to suit His own purposes. He formulated His answer
by looking at the question in its broadest possible terms. All of the commandments could be “summed up” in
the “Great Commandment”, as it would come to be known: the greatest commandment is “love of God and
love of neighbor”. One is to love God not with just part of one’s being, but with one’s whole self: heart, soul
and mind. One is also called to love one’s neighbor as one’s self. It is on these commandments that the Law
and the Prophets is based. This is where my father took issue – our neighbor wasn’t being loving when he
mowed at the crack of dawn, for it showed no love of neighbor. My father, however, fell short of this ideal by
his choice of thought and word! It wasn’t just incumbent on our neighbor to be charitable – it fell to my dad to
show love by being patient (a tall task indeed at six a.m. but with God, all things are possible!). Loving one’s
neighbor is clearly a challenging task, indeed!
To love God isn’t much easier – but again, God is there to help! God gives us the Holy Spirit, the Scriptures
and the Sacraments to be drawn into the mystery of the Godhead. One can love something with which they
can identify and associate. We can easily give up, saying that God is a mystery and therefore “unsolvable” or
we can try and understand God by praying, reading and discovering God’s presence in our world and our
lives. God desires to be part of our experience, for it was God who created that experience. To deny God is
truly to deny ourselves. When we love God with everything we have and are (Mt 22:37), we discover who we
are.
May we have the courage to love fully both God and neighbor. May we see God at work in the “other”, so
that we can see God at work in ourselves. Finally, may we continue to explore who God is for us, so that we
can live out all the commandments in both word and deed.
Have a Blessed Week,
Fr. Paul

Generation MySpace: Helping Your Teen Survive Online Adolescence

Books available at the Groton Public Library, the Dunstable Public Library
and available for purchase at Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble and Borders Books
Excerpts from the book:
25% of MySpace users are between the ages of 13 and 17
According to a recent report by CBS News, MySpace.com is a “sexual predator’s dream come
true.”
The school bully is moving into cyberspace.
Teenagers spend about $195 BILLION annually on clothes, eating out, cars entertainment, cell
phones...Because kids spend money and spend so much time on MySpace, MySpace is a
marketer’s dream.
To be an effective parent of a preteen today,...one must be knowledgeable about and actively
involved in the morphing teenscape. Your nine-year old is only t-minus three years away from full
blast off into social-networking sites.
Addicted. That’s how Holly, a senior at a local high school described her relationship with
MySpace. ...compulsion to spend hours everyday on MySpace is a symptom of her generation’s
having “nothing better to do in our lives.”
Most teens spend 3-5 hours online each day.
Nearly ½ of the 16-17 year olds surveyed report that their parents or guardians know very little
or nothing about what they do on the Internet.
Don’t be one of those parents who are clueless about social networking. Join
our discussion and bring your friends!

welcome to drop by for a few minutes or to sign up to stay with Jesus for a definite hour or more.

What do you do during Adoration? You pray before the very presence of Our Lord exposed in
the monstrance. You’ll have time to be alone with Jesus to recite your favorite prayers, read the
Bible, contemplate acts of faith, hope, charity, thanksgiving, reparation, pray a Rosary, Chaplet of
Divine Mercy, or do whatever type of prayerful devotion that suits you before Our Lord. You can
just sit and say nothing, simply keeping Him company, just as you would a dear friend.
