Arched Roman with Side Panels
Roman shades are classic in design but can be modernized with updated fabrication techniques and a creative
frame-of-mind. Our arched Roman shade is mounted inside the window frame with a sheer fabric for the body.
Flanked with side panels that are pleated to pattern, this arched treatment is flexible and provides various
stages of light and privacy for an elegantly designed and functional entryway space.

Step-By-Step Instructions
This how-to guide covers the steps fabricate and
install the arched fabric / sheer Roman and the
pleated-to pattern panels.

Making the Template:

Tape paper over arch.

Run the side of a piece of chalk along the window trim openings.

Mark top and bottom of arch.

Mark measurement from top to ceiling, from side to impediment and at window breaks.

Label with customer information.

Roll template for transport.
Making the Top – solid fabric arch:

Cut top of arch to pattern plus seam allowances and a few inches longer than the pattern.

Iron on a layer of Iron-On Batting to the back.

Cut and make welt cord.

Sew welt to curve, cutting cord out of casing at the bottom.

Place front to back, right sides together and sew around curved area.

Clip curves.

Turn right sides out and press.
Making the Sheer Shade body:

Cut sheer to width plus side hems x length plus top and bottom seam allowance.

Turn under and press in double 2" side hems.

Close side hems.

Making the Bottom Permanent Folds - solid fabric:

Cut solid bottom fabric to cut width of sheer x three folds + top seam allowance + bottom hem.
Fold in and press bottom hem.
Close bottom hem.
Putting the Pieces Together:

Lay the bottom face down on the table so the top is running next to the edge of the table.
Lay the sheer, centered, on top, face up.
Pin well.
Sew sheer to bottom fabric.
Lay out fabric so seam is face up.
Tuck under seam to enclose it.
Pin well and top stitch to secure.

Fold in the double 2" side hems on the bottom and close.
Fold under top arch to finished length and press to set a crease.
Match up right sides of front and sheer.
Sew to join.
Fold back over seam and hand close.
Adding the Rings for a Stationary Shade:

Measure for ring placement.

String cording through bottom ring and into an orb.
Sew on rings.
String the shade, pulling all permanent folds together, then tie off cord.
Or, connect all shade rings with split rings.

Making the Striped Panels:

Cut and join widths as needed.

Fold under and press in a double 4" bottom hem.

Close hem.

Cut and join widths of interlining and lining.

Serge hem of the interlining.

Turn under and press in a double 3" hem on the lining.
Close lining hem.

Lay face fabric face down, add interlining and lining, face up.

Fold over and iron in double 1 ½" side hems.

Close side hems, adding drapery weights at corners and join seams.
Measure for finished length. Press.
Fold under and press in a double 4" header, adding a row of buckram.
Pleat header.
Add drapery pins to each pleat.
Installation:

Screw in notched right angle pin strip to the window frame.
Cut pieces as needed to complete the arch.
Place pins in treatment and then place pin through holes in strip.

Install panels and do final steaming and dressing.
