DRUMHEAD SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE ON THE 65th

NORMANDY VETERANS ASSOCIATION
DRUMHEAD
SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE
The Normandy Veterans Association wishes to thank AECOM for its generous
sponsorship of this Order of Service to mark the company’s contribution to the
Normandy Landings.
Only last month AECOM brought together all of its operating companies
worldwide under the one name. One of these, Faber Maunsell, was formed by the
merger of two UK companies, Oscar Faber and Maunsell, both of which were
involved in the design and supervision of ‘The Mulberry Harbour’ and are
proudly named on the ‘Monument to the Royal Engineers’ here in Arromanches.

Land of Hope and Glory
Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free,
How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee?
Wider still and wider shall thy bounds be set;
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet,
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet.
Still June, and from both sides of the Channel
Yeomen ghost onto the beach at Arromanches.
A few survivors are also there, fewer every year,
And when they go, the printed page of sand.
Evening Hymn and Sunset
Auld Lang Syne
Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never bro,t to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne,
We’ll tak’ a cup o’kindness yet for auld lang syne.
These words were written by Andrew Motion, the Poet Laureate
In memory of his father Lt.Col. Richard Motion T.D. (1929-2006)
Who landed on Gold Beach on 6th June 1944 with 147th (Essex Yeomanry) R.A.

The Bidding Prayer
Chaplain: Let us remember before God all who took part in the
Normandy landings; those who gave their lives as
comrades in the British Army, the Royal Navy, the Royal
Air Force and from other countries, who we remember
with pride.
And we pray that, loyal to their example and their
sense of duty we may be ever vigilant of freedom,
peace and security.
The Lord’s Prayer (to be said together)
Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name,
Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it
is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us
our trespasses as we forgive those that trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For
hine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and
ever.
Amen.
La Marseillaise
Allons enfants de la Patrie,
Le jour de gloie est arrive!
Contre nous de la tyrannie,
L’etendard sanglant est leve!(bis)
Entendez-vous dans les canpagnes
Mugir ces feroces soldats?
Ils viennent jusque dans nos bras
Engorger nos fils et nos compagnes!
Refrain
Aux armes, citoyens!
Formez vos bataillons!
Marchons! marchons!
Qu’un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons!
National Anthem
God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen.
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen.

Chaplain
Prayer for all
O God we give thanks to Thee this day in our prayers.
We give thanks with our presence on this day, in which
we are gathered here to honour those who died in the
Normandy Battle.
Let us say together the Prayer of the
Normandy Veterans Association
O Eternal Lord God, who has united together all
veterans of the Normandy Campaign. Grant we beseech
you, your blessing and give us strength to carry on our
work to aid and bring companionship to all Normandy
Veterans and joy and common purpose throughout our
Association. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ
whose courage never failed.
Amen
We say together:
Lord God our Father, we pledge ourselves to serve thee
and mankind, in the cause of peace, for the relief of
want and suffering, and for the praise of thy Name.
Guide us by thy spirit: give us wisdom: give us hope, and
keep us faithful now and always.
Amen
Hymn
Love divine, all loves excelling,
Joy of heaven, to earth come down,
Fix in us thy humble dwelling,
All Thy faithful mercies crown:
Jesus, Thou art all compassion,
Pure, unbounded love Thou art;
Visit us with Thy salvation,
Enter every trembling heart.
Come, almighty to deliver,
Let us all Thy grace receive;
Suddenly return, and never,
Never more Thy temple leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
Serve Thee as Thy hosts above,
Pray, and praise Thee without ceasing,
Glory in Thy perfect love.
Finish, then, Thy new creation:
Pure and spotless let us be;
Let us see Thy great salvation,
Perfectly restored to Thee,
Changed from glory into glory,
Till in heaven we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before Thee,
Lost in wonder, love, and praise.
Charge to the rising generation
A Veteran says
You have heard of and seen the sites of June 1944 and of the
bravery and sacrifice of so many of our friends. These events
made the future and life which you have enjoyed. Please always
remember these things and tell the story as often as you can.
A Cadet replies:
I appreciate what you and your friends did for me and I promise
never to forget your bravery and sacrifice.

The Act of Remembrance
Let us pray
Chaplain: Let us remember before God, and commend to his sure
keeping:
Those who have died for their country in war;
Those whom we knew, and whose memory we treasure;
And all who have lived and died in the service of
mankind.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
All:
We will remember them.

Almighty God, the Father of all men, we pray this day for all the
nations of the world that laying aside all unworthy ambition and
mistaken fear they may understand and follow the things that
belong to your peace. May the whole body of mankind, healed of
its divisions, be united in the service of all that is good and true.
We pray especially this day for the people of this land of France,
of Great Britain and of all Allied Countries, that as we stood
together in the dark days of the war we may find common cause
in the days ahead, united in the service of all that is honourable
and true. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Almighty and merciful Father, we pray for all those who have
suffered because of war; those who still carry the grievous scars
of battle, whether in body or mind; those who were bereaved and
who have never lost the deep ache of separation; and all whose
faith in you was shaken by war, leaving them confused and bitter.
Grant to all who are still in great need your gifts of healing, light
and peace. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Hymn
Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm doth bind the restless wave,
Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep:
O hear us when we cry to thee
For those in peril on the sea.
O Saviour, whose almighty word
The wind and waves submissive heard,
Who walkedst on the foaming deep:
And calm amid its rage didst sleep:
O hear us when we cry to thee
For those in peril on the sea.
O Trinity of love and power,
Our brethern shield in danger’s hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect them wheresoe’er they go:
And ever let there rise to thee
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.
