December 2012 Carol Service / Prize Giving The annual Carol Service and Prize Giving took place on Monday 3rd December at St David’s church. The Lower School gave an excellent performance of Babushka to start off the proceedings. Mr Backway, who recently retired from teaching Geography at the School, returned to present the prizes this year. The evening was completed with refreshments back at School, where parents had the opportunity to see the Christmas cakes produced by Year 7 pupils. Children In Need day Christmas Fayre The sun shone and sales were excellent! Saturday 1st December turned out to be a lovely sunny Winter's day. All year groups from the youngest juniors to year 11 ran a wide variety of stalls which included many Christmas themed stalls, a Willy Wonka Chocolate room, Scalextric Challenge and various hot and cold refreshments. This year we dressed in something red for Children in Need and raised £100 As well as pupils running their stalls, we had a well stocked, quality jumble sale and second hand uniform stall run by the Friends of St. Wilfrid's. A special visitor was the vibrant Max Jones (a former pupil at St. Wilfrid's School) who was our DJ for the day and did a truly excellent job! As lunchtime approached, we enjoyed delicious sausage rolls and filled jacket potatoes, followed by a dessert from the cake stalls, chocolate fountain and hot mince pies. The raffle was a huge success and many of the wonderful prizes were sourced by parents from the Friends of St. Wilfrid's. Money is still coming in, so the final total has not been calculated yet, but early indications are over £1500! Thank you to everyone who contritbuted to this special day! The St. Wilfrid's School Christmas Fayre was a great success and, we hope, the first of many more to come! Myfanwy, the Buddhist monk, explained about the daily life of the temple and the significance of all the lovely objects in the room The ait in the room had the lovely aroma of incense and the atmosphere was very calming! Kestrels spent a fascinating morning at Exeter Cathedral. We had a tour from Sarah who showed us some very interesting details of the architecture and objects inside and outside the Cathedral. We also had a workshop which involved handling some of the objects and artefacts which were very beautiful and interesting. We did some lovely Creative Writing and some drawings of the object and ended up solving and writing some very entertaining riddles! The children asked many questions and we found it all very interesting indeed. Year 10 Geographers at Dawlish Warren On the 21st of November the year 10 Geography students visited Dawlish Warren as part of their study of coastal systems. We looked at the management of the area and how it acts as an important part of tourism in Devon. It was a really productive day despite the weather in the morning and we collected lots of information to help our studies. It was an excellent opportunity for the year 10 students who worked really hard to bring to life what they learn about in the classroom and see how nature shapes our coastline. Well done girls: AN EXCELLENT WIN Girl(s) of the Match – Emily Piper and Hannah Hart @ Bristol visit On Thursday 15th November all the pupils in Years 7 and 8 visited @Bristol the Science museum in Bristol. The main focus of the visit was to experience the hands-on activities and exhibitions, as well as attending a science theatre show investigating forces and explosions and then visiting the Planetarium to explore the Solar System. The dynamic and energetic Science show ‘Launch it!’ investigated forces and explosions. The pupils were actively involved in decisions over weight, mass, speed and friction as they explored the forces at work when launching a rocket. In the unique and immersive setting of @Bristol’s Planetarium, students observed the motions of the Sun, Moon and stars across the sky and looked at how this relates to Earth’s place within our Solar System. They were also challenged to make similar observations from the surfaces of other planets and to think about how this relates to the nature of the Solar system.
