Carol Service / Prize Giving
The annual Carol Service and Prize Giving took place on Monday 3rd
December at St David’s church. The Lower School gave an excellent
performance of Babushka to start off the proceedings.
Mr Backway, who recently
retired from teaching Geography
at the School, returned to
present the prizes this year.
The evening was completed with
refreshments back at School,
where parents had the
opportunity to see the Christmas
cakes produced by Year 7 pupils.
Children In
Need day
Christmas Fayre
The sun shone and sales were excellent! Saturday 1st December turned out
to be a lovely sunny Winter's day. All year groups from the youngest juniors
to year 11 ran a wide variety of stalls which included many Christmas
themed stalls, a Willy Wonka Chocolate room, Scalextric Challenge and
various hot and cold refreshments.
This year we dressed in
something red for
Children in Need
and raised £100
As well as pupils running their stalls, we had a well stocked, quality jumble
sale and second hand uniform stall run by the Friends of St. Wilfrid's.
A special visitor was the vibrant Max Jones (a former pupil at St. Wilfrid's
School) who was our DJ for the day and did a truly excellent job!
As lunchtime approached, we enjoyed delicious sausage rolls and filled
jacket potatoes, followed by a dessert from the cake stalls, chocolate
fountain and hot mince pies.
The raffle was a huge success and many of the wonderful prizes were
sourced by parents from the Friends of St. Wilfrid's.
Money is still coming in, so the final
total has not been calculated yet,
but early indications are over
£1500!
Thank you to everyone who
contritbuted to this special day!
The St. Wilfrid's School Christmas
Fayre was a great success and, we
hope, the first of many more to
come!

Buddhist Temple visit
Exeter Cathedral visit
The Lower School spent the morning at a
beautiful, but tiny, Buddhist temple in Exeter.
Myfanwy, the Buddhist monk, explained about
the daily life of the temple and the significance
of all the lovely objects in the room The ait in
the room had the lovely aroma of incense and
the atmosphere was very calming!
Kestrels spent a fascinating
morning at Exeter Cathedral. We
had a tour from Sarah who showed
us some very interesting details of
the architecture and objects inside
and outside the Cathedral. We also
had a workshop which involved
handling some of the objects and
artefacts which were very beautiful
and interesting. We did some lovely
Creative Writing and some
drawings of the object and ended
up solving and writing some very
entertaining riddles!
The children
asked many
questions and
we found it all
very interesting
indeed.
Year 10 Geographers at
Dawlish Warren
On the 21st of November the year
10 Geography students visited
Dawlish Warren as part of their
study of coastal systems. We
looked at the management of the
area and how it acts as an
important part of tourism in
Devon. It was a really productive
day despite the weather in the morning and we
collected lots of information to help our studies. It
was an excellent opportunity for the year 10
students who worked really hard to bring to life what
they learn about in the classroom and see how
nature shapes our coastline.
Under 14 Netball Vs St
James
St Wilfrid’s 13 – 6 St James
Another excellent performance by St Wilfrid’s.
Superbly led by Captain Hannah Hart, St Wilfrid’s
dominated a difficult game. It showed rapidly
improving skills and a real determination to win.
A special thank you to Megan Piper who bravely
played three years above her age group to help out
the team.
Well done girls: AN EXCELLENT WIN

@ Bristol visit
On Thursday 15th November all the pupils in Years 7 and 8 visited @Bristol the Science museum in Bristol.
The main focus of the visit was to experience the hands-on activities and exhibitions, as well as attending a
science theatre show investigating forces and explosions and then visiting the Planetarium to explore the
Solar System.
The dynamic and energetic Science show ‘Launch it!’ investigated forces and explosions. The pupils were
actively involved in decisions over weight, mass, speed and friction as they explored the forces at work
when launching a rocket.
In the unique and immersive setting of @Bristol’s Planetarium, students observed the motions of the Sun,
Moon and stars across the sky and looked at how this relates to Earth’s place within our Solar System. They
were also challenged to make similar observations from the surfaces of other planets and to think about
how this relates to the nature of the Solar system.

sunny day.

Year 8 Exhibition at
Gloss Gallery
Year 8, who have been studying the German
Expressionist Artist Franz Marc in their Art
lessons, have produced a set of animal
paintings. Marc was a painter who made his
own colourful animal pictures in the years just
before the First World War.
The Yr 8 paintings are being shown in the ‘2020’ Art Exhibition at the Gloss gallery
in Exeter in November and December 2012. This is a free exhibition at Barnfield
Crescent which runs until 29th December.
Following on from this year’s
popular visit to Thorpe Park,
planning is already underway
for a trip to Alton Towers
next year.
Ski Trip 2013
At last we know where we
will be heading next Easter....
The gallery intends to have a charity auction for all
the paintings in the exhibition on 18th December. For
more details see the Gloss Gallery website,

Junior School End of Term Extravaganza
On Wednesday 5th December the
Lower School invited the members of
Year 7 to join them for an end of term
extravaganza. They were
entertained by a magician and
played party games before eating
their way through a mountain of
treats.
We shall be going to Zell am
See in Austria and staying in
the Club Kitzsteinhorn hotel
(which can be seen above).
Evening activities will include
swimming, pizza night,
shopping and going to an ice
hockey match. A meeting
was held for parents on the
evening of the Carol Service.
Exams
Immediately after Christmas, there will be both internal school mock
examinations for Years 9 & 11 and actual GCSE
Science examinations for pupils in Years 9 &10.
Your child will have received a copy of their exam
timetable before they finished for Christmas and
should be preparing for them over the holiday period.
