CURRENTS DEC A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding 03 Nearly 12,000 people gathered at Naval Station Norfolk on Saturday, Dec. 1 to witness the historic inactivation ceremony of the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise (CVN 65). Photos by Chris Oxley “Big E” Inactivated After 51 Years Nearly 12,000 past and current crew members, family and friends gathered at Naval Station Norfolk on Saturday, Dec. 1 for the inactivation ceremony of the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65). The ceremony marked the last public event for the ship, and served as a celebration of life for the ship. Several special guests attended the event including the Chief of Naval Operations, the Commander of United States Fleet Forces, nine of 23 prior commanding officers, and thousands of Enterprise veterans. Shipbuilder Doug McPherson, was one of the many Newport News shipbuilders in attendance at the historic ceremony. “While seeing Enterprise being put to rest may be a sad moment for many of us, ‘Big E’s’ inactivation is a moment for all of our shipbuilders to reflect back with pride on the many great things we have accomplished, both on Enterprise and all of our other ships,” he said. “She has served our nation well for 51 years and is a symbol of both our strength and our awesome capabilities.” During the ceremony, Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) President Matt Mulherin spoke on behalf of NNS shipbuilders and expressed how proud they are to have been part of Enterprise’s legacy from the very beginning as well... During the event, each participant was recognized with a special coin. Winner Gary Moore (E38) said his song lyrics included messages from NNS Environment, Health and Safety bulletins. “The rap portion of my song was actually inspired by various shipyard safety bulletins. I thought putting them to a beat would make the messages more memorable for all shipbuilders.” Mulherin invited the shipyard NNS President Matt Mulherin and Vice President of Engineering and Design Jennifer Boykin congratulate Gary Moore, the winner of the 2012 Safety Song Contest for his song “Accident Free.” Photo by Chris Oxley “celebrities” to join him in introducing WVEC, Channel 13’s “Holiday Salute” program. Machine Shop Superintendent Joey Perry attended the event and said, “The fact that each of the 362 craftsman who work within the walls of the Machine Shop have gone 173,760 hours without one accident or injury is a major accomplishment. I’m proud that our craftsman are committed to working safely and preventing injuries.” The Machine Shop celebrates three months of being accident-free with a luncheon. Photo by John Whalen Component Fabrication and Assembly Director Matt Needy also attended the event and congratulated shipbuilders for a job well done. “Always working safely is the first of our six divisional commitments,” he said. “This accomplishment speaks for itself in showing that each of you take safety very seriously.” “Big E” Inactivated After 51 Years Continued from p. 1 ...as everything Enterprise has accomplished during her long and distinguished service to the U.S. Mulherin ended his remarks by saying, “As we embark upon her inactivation, we will handle her with the same care as when we poured her first castings.” He then went on to say, “When our work is complete, it will be a bittersweet moment as Enterprise leaves NNS for the final time. But our shipbuilders will always take pride in knowing that we don’t just build great ships -- we build legends.” In honor of Enterprise’s spirit, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced via video message that the NNS President Matt Mulherin speaks during Enterprise’s Inactivation Ceremony on Dec. 1.
