GFIAFT
FESTIVAL
Global village leaves no mud hut or sampan unturned in the
quest for artefacts of exquisite beauty. At various times our buyers
can be found, attired in tarboosh and khaki-drill shorts, scouring the
darker continents by calashe; tonga and trap; aboard trireme,
carrack or barquentine; astride llama, palfrey and alborack!
Single-handed, they have thrown bones with witch doctors
at Wankie, broken breadfruit with the headhunters of Palembang,
19E',el
argued the toss with dhoti-clad merchants in the backstreets of
Benares; and traded calculators for Walang Kulits off the coast of
Belitung.
Every so often, our buyers return to their Somerset village
bearing mysterious baubles, trinkets, toys, carvings and lengths of
woven cloth. These are displayed in a warehouse that was once a
church, and in curious West Country shops, where you can wander
about to the strains of an Akha harp and the fragrance of Tyi-wara
incense; admiring Columbian wallhangings, Indonesian batiks, Thai
klong jars and Pechwai paintings. Or bartering with credit card or
cash
for Blue Ming pottery
pendants,
JTJI\IE
a copper Samovar from
Kashmir, or a pair of stout Llasa boots!
You owe it to your experience to visit Global Village. Why
with luck you might even stumble across one of our staff in loincloth or Kathakali mask, though when last seen they were heading
for Hainan at the wheel of a cabriolet.
