As we strengthen our community ties, we’ve worked to ensure
that stewardship of your support is sustained and earned.

OUR MISSION
A few years ago, SCO refined its mission
by focusing on three primary guiding principles by which our mission originates. This
concentrated approach allows everyone at SCO
to focus on the direction and philosophy that
guide the college under the governance of our
Board of Trustees.
Students are our primary stakeholders in
optometric education. Numerous secondary
stakeholders include our alumni, the public,
our patients and others. Serving our students
and preparing them for the profession of optometry drives our mission, which is to lead
the profession by:
Educating the Best Possible
Healthcare Providers
Promoting Lifelong
Learning
Fostering a Personal
Commitment to Service
In this year’s annual report issue, we’ll ex-
amine progress as it relates to these principles.
SCO is a customer service-driven organization,
committed to the highest levels of meeting
the needs of our students. Optometric education at its highest caliber is a core value in all
that we undertake at SCO. We are more committed than ever before in raising the bar in
optometric education.

Educating the Best Possible
Healthcare Providers
By recruiting and providing top optometry students with the
academic and clinical education they need, SCO prepares optometrists who practice at the fullest of their potential.
Progress Items to Note
>>Construction began in May on our new, state-of-theart classroom and auditorium building with flexible
spaces that support best practices for technology
needed by 21st century students.
>>SCO’s first-year class had a 3.54 cumulative GPA, the
highest in SCO’s history for an entering class.
>>The Hayes Center assumed responsibility for career
counseling and placement services. All first-years
received career planning, and the number of practice
opportunities available to our students increased
by 60%.
>>Fifty-three percent of our students received scholarships or regional tuition benefits, a percentage SCO
hopes to increase with your support in 2013.
>>SCO recorded a 0% default rate for student loans, the
16th consecutive year of data reflecting how well our
graduates are able to repay their loans.
>>A record 185 people attended Discover Optometry, our
bi-annual, daylong event to introduce undergraduate
and high school students to optometry.
>>SCO also hosted our third annual Alumni/Child
Admissions Forum. SCO’s Class of 2016 has 10 legacy
students in it.
>>SCO’s minority student recruitment outreach resulted
in 20% minority enrollment for the Class of 2016.
>>Our emphasis on the importance of residency
programs resulted in 50 students from the
Class of 2012 applying for residencies, the highest
of any program in the country. SCO’s residency
program is also the largest in the country, with
40 residents participating in 23 programs for the
2012-13 academic year.
>>The Class of 2012 scored 99% on Part I of the National
Boards, 98% on Part II and 99% on Part III. The Class
of 2013 scored 92% the first time they took Part I, compared to the 85% national average.

Promoting Lifelong Learning
The concept of lifelong learning is vitally important to optometric education. The concept is introduced to our students and
encouraged in our graduates as essential to our profession.
Progress Items to Note
>>The strength of any academic program begins with
securing accreditation. SCO underwent regional
and ACOE accreditation this past year with positive
reaffirmation resulting.
>>SCO continues to embrace emerging technology as
critically important learning tools for our students.
Instructional technology is actively part of the design
of SCO’s new classroom.
>>SCO’s Clinical Programs play an important role in this
area, including completion this past year of the Digital
Observatory for the new Advanced Procedures Theater,
as well as completion of a new Optical Laboratory.
>>The Eye Center is using iPads to streamline the
check-in process, one of several positive developments
resulting in higher patient satisfaction scores
on surveys.
>>SCO’s Summer Research Program is now in its fourth
year; this past summer saw 25 students participate,
resulting in 10 presentations, one published paper, two
papers currently in revision, and significant support of
industry sponsorship through Alcon and CIBA Vision.
>>SCO is launching a comprehensive review of our
Continuing Education Program to consider scope of
practice issues, needs of future ODs, and to examine
alternate delivery formats to meet the needs of our
graduates.
>>SCO is developing training needs for all employees
based on their job roles and skill sets to keep our
faculty and staff abreast of new ideas and technology
important to optometric education.

Fostering a Personal
Commitment to Service
Our students recognize the importance of a commitment to
service through the example of our employees and alumni and a
growing emphasis on the college’s commitment to service in our
local community.
Progress Items to Note
>>SCO has emphasized the importance of customer
service to its employees, resulting in a high level
of dedication that fosters enhanced service to our
stakeholders.
>>Service-based learning is being implemented through
our recently launched program called focus, or
Facilitating Optometric Curriculum Using Service.
>>As a testament to our commitment to service, SCO’s
Clinical Programs provided $1,043,530 in professional
services to the community’s indigent or other at-risk
populations in the last fiscal year.
>>Our Community Vision Health Services continue to
provide increased service opportunities, including
Project S.A.V.E. (Students and Advocates for Vision in
Education), that resulted in more than 800 children
being served in the program’s first year.
>>Creation of new Pediatric/Community Health
residencies resulted in more than 600 children being
served in the community.
>>SCO launched a new community health initiative,
Diabetes Awareness in 2012, our first ever approach
to increasing community awareness and developing
faculty, staff and student involvement with public
health issues related to eye health and vision care.
>>The importance of process improvement – and
the idea that improvement cannot occur without
change – began with the formation of a new employee
committee to examine ways that SCO’s employees
can better fulfill our mission.
>>Our faculty and staff serve as role models for our
students in this area. This year, Dr. Jim Venable was a
finalist for the Memphis Business Journal’s Healthcare
Heroes Award representing The Eye Center’s
Community Services, while Dr. Janette Dumas was
recognized as one of the city’s top leaders under the
age of 40.

Honor Roll of Donors
Since launching in March 2012, SCO’s “Envision Our Progress”
campaign has proven to be a momentous endeavor. Motivated by
a firm commitment to improving the quality of optometric education, this campaign will make a positive impact on our students
and graduates in the coming years.
Raising $4,000,000 to construct our new academic facilities,
consolidate teaching labs and research areas, provide more scholarships and to support clinical education is no light undertaking.
As you will see in this Honor Roll of Donors list, SCO’s full Board
of Trustees and our President and Vice Presidents have made significant commitments to this campaign. Scores of alumni, faculty
and staff have pledged their support.
These lists of donors reflect the strength of commitment to
this campaign. Your generosity and support has also proven useful in signaling to our ophthalmic partners and the Memphis
community that SCO is serious about enhancing the quality of
our program. An even greater point of pride would be to see this
list grow by this time next year to include even more alumni. Your
support will allow SCO to enhance its stature in the community,
the profession and beyond.
Pictured in our Honor Roll of Donors spread is Alumni Council
member Horace Deal, OD ’97, who helped lead his class’s effort to
endow the Jimmy Sheridan Memorial Scholarship. After the untimely passing a few years ago of Jimmy Sheridan, OD ’97, Dr. Deal
and others in his class sought to remember their classmate with a
meaningful gift. In just two short years, the class responded to the
challenge, and Dr. Deal presented the first scholarship this year to
Georgia student, Keri Cassels, ’14.
The students of SCO, the primary stakeholder in our day-today mission, join the entire SCO community in extending our
collective appreciation to everyone who has supported the college
through the years and particularly during 2012, a momentous
year in SCO’s history. Thank you for allowing us to strengthen our
academic facilities, scholarship opportunities and patient care exposure for our interns and our community.

SCO HAPPENINGS
SCO Successes Shine at Convocation
Southern College of Optometry held its 27th annual Convocation ceremony in October to honor achievements by SCO’s
alumni, students, faculty, and staff.
First-year students received their white coats, signed SCO’s academic honor code and recited the optometric oath for students.
Scholarships and other honors totaling nearly $100,000 were awarded in recognition of academic excellence, leadership or service. Many student scholarships were made possible through the generous and consistent financial support of SCO alumni to the
Annual Fund and the Endowed Scholarship Fund.
SCO President Richard W. Phillips, OD ’78, presented two distinguished alumni with awards. Receiving the
Lifetime Achievement Award was Nathan Ford, OD ’50, an East Tennessee native who became his county’s first fulltime optometrist. A devoted advocate for education, he was elected at age 27 to his local school board, and several
years later, he was elected to four terms in the Tennessee legislature. The practice he started in 1950 later recruited SCO
graduates from the Classes of 1961, 1981, 1995 and 2010. In 1980, he was named Tennessee’s OD of the Year.
Kelly Kerksick, OD ’02, received SCO’s Young Alumni Award. Dr. Kerksick founded Midwest Vision Care in
Columbia, Illinois following her graduation. She serves as a Key Opinion Leader for Bausch & Lomb and Vistakon. She
serves as chief editor for New O.D., an online optometric publication, as a clinical examiner for the National Board of
Optometry, and as a faculty member for The Vision Care Institute. She also serves as Director of Professional Services
for Vision Source, a premier organization for ODs in private practice.
In recognition of their dedication to SCO, Dr. Phillips presented the President’s
Special Recognition Awards to Jennifer Sanderson, OD, faculty, and Ken Coble, staff.
John Mark Jackson, OD ’99, received the Burnett Faculty Recognition Award.
Faculty of the Year Awards were presented to Scott Ensor, OD ’01 (two awards),
William Kress, OD (three awards), John Mark Jackson, OD ’99, Carrie Lebowitz, OD
’06, and Jared Powelson, OD ’96.
A Board of Trustees resolution was also presented to Samuel Johnson, ’13,
former student representative to the Board.
Members of the Class of 1962 reunited in cap and gown
during Convocation.

NEWS BRIEFS
Travel with a Purpose in Honduras
by SCO President Richard W. Phillips, OD ’78
Honduras is a beautiful country. It has a rich history that comes alive in the scenery, which includes Mayan ruins, the
paintings of Jose Antonio Velásquez and the rolling hills. Although Honduras is a beautiful country, they face a variety of difficult
issues that must be overcome in order to help the 50 percent of Hondurans that currently live in poverty. One of these issues is
access to clean water. This past summer, I set out on behalf of the Memphis Rotary Club to help them.
For more than two years, the Memphis Rotary Club has been developing a program to provide clean, safe drinking water to
communities suffering from diseases related to contaminated or inadequately processed water supplies. The club partnered with
an organization called Living Waters for the World for training sessions near Oxford, Mississippi.
After completing training, Rotary members are able to lead mission trips, install clean water systems and educate
Honduran leaders on how, when and why to use clean water. In late July 2012, I had the opportunity to take my first mission trip.
I accompanied a team from Christ the Servant Lutheran
Church in Bellingham, Washington, to El Progreso, Honduras.
Working at the Ulua River High School, we installed a
clean water system that will benefit nearly 5,000 people. Our
first day, we met students, teachers and parents from the
school who told us that we were “the answer to their prayers.”
Most of the children had lost at least one sibling to complications resulting from drinking contaminated water. We immediately realized the privilege and awesome responsibility that
faced us.
In addition to installing a clean water system, our approach was to “train the trainers.” This endeavor involved
educating them on how to teach their community the importance of when and how to use clean water. Our group talked
them through and assisted them in constructing a system
that they will be able to maintain after our departure. Most of
the equipment and supplies made their way to Honduras in
our suitcases. One of the most inspiring things involved the
teachers who make $300 a month – when they get paid – who contributed $150 each to build the structure that now houses the
clean water system.
By the fourth day of the trip, we had the system operating smoothly and had produced nearly 100 five-gallon bottles of clean
drinking water. It would be a difficult contest to decide who demonstrated more pride – the Hondurans or the mission team. We
formed a bond, working together, that is unlike anything I have experienced before.
The dedication service was amazing, featuring speeches by the school’s principal, the town’s mayor and the local contractor
who provided much of the assistance on the building, among others. The event also featured a signature beverage – water from
our system. It was a tremendous feeling to hear so many comments about how great the water tasted. My layover in the Atlanta
airport was very interesting to me. I came face-to-face with a water fountain, just standing there in Terminal E by itself, with no
one truly appreciating the miracle of the readily available water supply we enjoy in this country. As I made my way home, I was
full of new appreciation for all the blessings in my life. I went to Honduras uncertain that I was really cut out to be able to do
such a project, but I left knowing that it will not be my last. Whereas we have, through Rotary efforts, virtually eliminated polio
and other life-threatening illnesses, diseases related to drinking contaminated water are the No. 1 reason children are hospitalized
throughout the world today. No child should die from the lack of clean drinking water. I encourage others to consider projects to
provide clean drinking water. I am exceptionally proud to have been involved in the team, the organization and the process that
allows clean water to flow in one public high school in Honduras. I hope to be involved in similar work in the future, ensuring
viability of even more beautiful countries.

SCO Raises Community Awareness in 2012
This past year saw a significant effort by the college to increase its
visibility in the Memphis community. From publicizing SCO’s building
program to fostering new relationships with community partners, the
college made good progress in raising awareness about what an asset
SCO is to the local community.
At the start of the year, SCO worked to coordinate the announcement about the new academic expansion project and the kick-off of
the college’s “Envision Our Progress” campaign. Release of the news
was timed to coincide with the formal kick-off announcement at SECO
in Atlanta for alumni. Significant publicity followed in the Commercial
Appeal newspaper, the Memphis Business Journal, the Memphis Daily
News, AOA News and Optometry Times, among others.
Procurement of more than half a million in community foundation grants also made headlines this year. News about grants bestowed
by the Plough and Assisi Foundations resulted in additional headlines
in the local media.
In all of the college’s media efforts, key messages are being communicated that align with SCO’s strategic plan. Specifically, opportunities
for interviews result in emphasizing the fact that SCO assists more than
80,000 Memphis area residents with eye and vision healthcare each
year as well as noting that Memphis benefits by hosting one of the nation’s leading optometry colleges.
As a result of SCO’s increasing visibility, the college has begun actively working to partner with other leading community organizations
or institutions. SCO partnered with the Memphis Zoo over the summer
to host a day-long, interactive information and activity fair for children.
The event was so successful that it’s being planned again for 2013.
In November, SCO partnered with the Memphis Grizzlies just as the
team enjoyed its best start in franchise history and attracted national
attention for its winning streak. When the Grizzlies identified a few
iconic Memphis landmark buildings, SCO’s distinctive 11-story tower
was selected as ideal for displaying large artwork.
The Grizzlies’ marketing team approached SCO, the Orpheum
Theatre and the Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau with the idea
of placing larger-than-life images of prominent Grizzlies players on the
sides of their buildings.
“It’s a positive thing for Memphis when two organizations can work
together like this,” said Christine Weinreich, SCO’s Director of Corporate
and Foundation Relations.
Grizzlies’ player Tony Allen now adorns the eastern side of SCO’s
tower. It’s the largest image placed by the Grizzlies and temporarily will
remain there until season’s end. In exchange for hosting the image, SCO
already has received positive publicity about the Grizzlies’ marketing
approach.
Additionally, a 30-second promo spot promoting SCO’s presence in
Memphis will play on the giant Jumbotron TV screens at 10 NBA games
in 2013. As the only optometry college in Tennessee, SCO intends to
continue its relationship with the state’s only NBA franchise.
It’s the kind of awareness-building effort that is seeing results. In
December, the Memphis Chamber of Commerce selected Southern
College of Optometry as one of its 10 organizations
or companies to watch in 2013. The Eye Center
and individual faculty members have also been
nominated for or received community awards in
recent months.
“SCO benefits so many people in the local
community that we intend to continue
spreading the word and looking
for new relationships that will
benefit our students and
patients in 2013,” added
Weinreich.
