10th Grade CP SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENTS
You will be working on 1 summer reading assignment. Before returning to school next school year, you will
need to read The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros and complete this assignment. This organizer is
intended to guide your reading and focus your thoughts in preparation for the discussions, summer reading test and
writing assignments you will engage in when you return in August. You can use this on the test. Assignment is
due: the first day of school: August 19, 2015.
Assignment: The House on Mango Street- by Sandra Cisneros
This assignment does not need to be typed; it can be handwritten and stapled together for submission. You may use
the graphic organizer here to write directly on, or you may type it up. Simply label everything and print it out for
submission on the first day of school. This assignment is designed to encourage active reading habits by requiring
you to pause and reflect after you read.
It is important to note that The House on Mango Street is written as a series of vignettes. A VIGNETTE (French,
"little vine") is a short composition showing considerable skill, especially such a composition designed with little or
no plot or larger narrative structure. Often vignettes are descriptive or evocative in their nature. Cisneros writes
vignettes about her life rather than using normal chronological plot sequencing. Each chapter is a vignette or a
snapshot of her life as she remembers it.

It is the atmosphere that an author creates in a literary work with the intention of evoking a certain emotion or feeling from the reader.
