September 2, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s
Stone, 2001
152 min., rated PG
Richard Harris, Maggie Smith,
Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint
This is the tale of Harry Potter, an ordinary 11-year
-old boy, serving as a sort of slave for his aunt and
uncle, who learns that he is actually a wizard and
has been invited to attend the Hogwarts School for
Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry is snatched away
from his mundane existence by Hagrid, the
grounds keeper for Hogwarts, and quickly thrown
into a world foreign to him.
September 9, Harry Potter and the Chamber of
Secrets, 2002
161 min., rated PG
Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson,
Rupert Grint
Forced to spend his summer holidays with his
muggle relations, Harry Potter gets a real shock
when he gets a surprise visitor: Dobby, the houseelf, who warns Harry Potter against returning to
Hogwarts, for terrible things are going to happen.
Harry decides to ignore Dobby's warning and continues with his pre-arranged schedule.
September 16, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of
Azkaban, 2004
142 min., rated PG
Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson,
Rupert Grint
Harry Potter is having a tough time with his relatives (yet again). He runs away after using magic
to inflate Uncle Vernon's sister, Marge, who was
being offensive towards Harry's parents. Initially
scared for using magic outside the school, he is
pleasantly surprised that he won't be penalized
after all.
September 23, Harry Potter and the Goblet of
Fire, 2005
157 min., rated PG-13
Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson,
Rupert Grint
Hogwarts is hosting 'The Triwizard Tournament', a
magical tournament between three well-known
schools of magic: Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and
Durmstrang. The contestants have to be above the
age of 17, and are chosen by a magical object
called Goblet of Fire.
September 30, Harry Potter and the Order of
the Phoenix, 2007
138 min., rated PG
Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson,
Rupert Grint
After a lonely summer on Privet Drive, Harry returns to a Hogwarts full of ill fortune. Few of the
students and parents believe him or Dumbledore
that Voldemort is really back. The ministry had decided to step in by appointing a new Defence
against the Dark Arts teacher who proves to be the
nastiest person Harry has ever encountered.

Spotlight on Computer Volunteers
Sometimes it is the behind-the-scenes volunteers who make such a difference to an organization.
Two such individuals have helped tremendously with LARSO’s technical side. Dave Delanoy and
Alan Hack both became involved with computers at LARSO when
they began going to the Computer User’s Group at the BESC and the
WRSC after retiring in 2000 and 2003, respectively.
Dave moved to Los Alamos from southern New Mexico in 1970. Upon retirement and with a career in data management, the computer
users group was a natural fit for Dave. At first he was a participant
and then, when the leaders of the group transitioned out, Dave
stepped in to run the group. Over time, the need for volunteer computer help for the LARSO staff became evident and Dave has generously helped to keep the computers running efficiently, troubleshooting where necessary.
Alan moved to Los Alamos in the late 60’s and was involved in safety
Dave Delanoy
analysis at the lab, when OSHA was a relatively new organization.
He retired in 2003 and, like Dave, found a niche helping with the
computer users group. Subsequently, he began to help with the staff
computers as well. Alan calls helping people with computer questions “a labor of love”. In addition, Alan has volunteered with the
Socrates discussion group (now the civic discussion group) at BESC
where he has enjoyed meeting people and learning. He also was involved for a number of years as a volunteer with Ham Radio Search
and Rescue.
Dave and Alan continue to help with the LARSO computers, most
recently with the Windows 10 update. Look for upcoming changes in
the computer lab, where the number of computers will be sized appropriately for the volume of people using them.

United Blood Services Blood Drive – 7/21 & 7/22
The United Blood Services Blood Drive exceeded the goals set for the two-day drive: On Thursday,
7/21, the donor goal was 69, and the actual number of donors was 79. On Friday, 7/22, the donor
goal was 50 and the actual number of donors was 69. Los Alamos is unique for blood drives because there are more “O” donors per capita than anywhere else in the state. Since “O” is the universal donor, this is an extremely important distinction! A big thank you goes out to the volunteers
who helped to register donors and to the volunteers who made sandwiches kept the snack and
drink supply going, as well as keeping an eye on the donors to make sure that they were doing o.k.
LAVA would also like to mention that the LAMC Hospital Auxiliary donates $100.00 for each blood
drive, which covers the majority of food costs – thank you so much!! Thank you, too, to our Kitchen
Chefs for steaming eggs for the egg salad, for the use of the BESC kitchen for preparation, and for
excellent suggestions! Finally, thank you to Day Out who provided and peeled the eggs (5 dozen!).
Volunteer Opportunities
Please consider helping out with these volunteer opportunities with stations that LAVA partners
with:
UNM-LA – There is a tremendous need for tutors to help with the English-as-a-SecondLanguage (ESL) classes as well as the High School Equivalency (HSE – formerly GED) clas-
Page 9
ses. The tutoring takes place during class time, so there are always students to be helped.
Ideally, tutors help one time per week for an hour and are provided with training beforehand.
The tutor training lasts approximately one hour.
Los Alamos Historical Society – Are you a history buff? Do you have an interest in educating
the general public about the origins of Los Alamos? Volunteers are needed to serve in the
Museum Shop or as tour guides – both at the homestead-era Romero Cabin and the historic
Hans Bethe House. The Historical Museum will have its grand re-opening later this year and
the Historical Society is in need of more volunteers!
Manhattan Project National Historic Park – Volunteers are needed to greet visitors and provide information to the general public about the new park. This volunteer position will include
running a short informational video as well as some time outdoors answering questions about
the Manhattan Project and the national lab history and future. A parks uniform and hat completes this volunteer position.
PEEC – Do you have a love of nature? Would you consider helping as a volunteer docent (either
for a regular shift or as a substitute)? PEEC is in need of docent volunteers or to help with educational programs such as Nature Playtimes on Monday mornings.
Please contact the LAVA office at 662-8923 for further information about these and other volunteer
opportunities at the many stations that partner with LAVA.
Thank you so much to the LAVA volunteers that give so generously of their time to help
make Los Alamos such an interesting and wonderful place to visit and live!

NOT QUITE RIGHT Live Stage Performances
The September production of Los Alamos Little Theatre is a stage play that most seniors will find
engaging. NOT QUITE RIGHT by Elaine Jarvik and local playwright Robert F. Benjamin, directed
by Dennis Powell, is an upbeat, humorous family drama posing several difficult predicaments in
couple relationships and intergenerational clashes. Two older couples grapple with marital issues,
their adult children making seemingly unwise decisions and the meaning of "What's enough, anyway?" Family eventually comes together for a boisterous, not-quite-resolved finale. Intense expectations undermine love relationships among family members – until we remember what it means to be
family. The play has lots of twists and turns, and plenty to talk about after the show.
Matinee performances:
Monday, September 5 (Labor Day), 2:00 p.m. at the ToolShed Theatre in Dixon, NM, is a
"preview performance."
Sunday, September 18, 2:00 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center, Nectar St., Los Alamos.
Evening performances:
Friday and Saturday nights, September 9-24, at 7:30 p.m. in Los Alamos.
Free Preview Performance of a 10-minute scene:
Betty Ehart Senior Center, Wednesday, August 31, at 12:30 p.m. (immediately after lunch)
White Rock Senior Center, Thursday, September 1, at 7:30 p.m.
Details at: www.lalt.org.
Worried About Falls – There’s a Class for That!
Loretta Stubbs and Pauline Schneider will offer “A Matter of Balance” fall prevention course for 8
weeks starting on Monday, September 12, at 9:45 a.m. in the BESC classroom. This is a nationally
recognized curriculum developed at Boston University. Topics to be covered include: Concerns
About Falling, Preventing Falls & Fractures, Improving Your Balance, Recognizing & Changing Fallty Habits, Home Safety Issues & Solutions and lots of Balance Promoting Exercises. The suggested donation for the training is $40. Each class is 2 hours in length and participants should wear
loose clothing and shoes appropriate for exercising and walking. If you’ve already had a fall or are
worried that you will, this course is just what you need! Call 662.8920 to sign up.
