Bag size 13 in. length x 14 in. width. based on example found in southern museums .This
design does not require the straps to be crossed on the bag & can be worn near empty
without the bag falling out of the straps.

MADE OF PAINTED LINEN
A Simi-rigid box knapsack with removable frame of rough sewn white pine, black
painted canvas & Black dyed leather straps. All edges are bound with leather. The
entire bag is lined with course linen and has a slit pocket in lining of outer flap.
Closing flap is worn away from the back and 4 blanket straps are included.

This knapsack of brown & white hair on cowhide with buff straps, one of 10,000
purchased from France in 1861 to equip several Mass. & Pennsylvania regiments.
They were returned via the Ordnance Dept.& some were re-issued.
Enlistment records show Ezra Brooks was drafted into Company H of the 8th United
States Colored Troops on Oct. 6th 1863 & was mustered out on Nov. 10th 1865. The
8th was formed & trained at Camp William Penn, near Philadelphia, & fought at
Olustee, the siege of Petersburg, & other engagements.

Transferred to Veterans Reserve Corps, April 13 1865
An old tag once on the knapsack reads “knapsack was carried by H.E. Carpenter from
Norwich, Conn. And used by him at every place where knapsacks were used in his entire
service of nearly three years.”
This knapsack is riveted together with no sewing.
