“Popular Algorithms in Art” ink on paper 29.7 x 35.5 cm Things That Always Work ink on paper 29.7 x 35.5 cm installation view SFAI MFA Exhibition, Fort Mason, San Francisco Algorithms in Art The series “Algorithms in Art” contains (at this point) 23 drawings (ink, acrylic, and markers on paper) of various sizes, one object (a chair with a scale), and “Creative Struggles” leaflets “to go.” Art and the creative process are treated with a big amount of veneration, as if they were something transcendental, something mysterious. Artists, when talking about their process, often refer to intuition, and I'm wondering if – in many cases – it isn't only a way to hide arbitrary decisions that lead to a piece. In his essay The Philosophy of Composition, Edgar Allan Poe describes his process of writing a poem The Raven. He suggests that art (in his case a poem) is a sequence of conscious decisions according to an initial intention. I'm taking this his essay as a starting point for my investigations. Algorithms in Art is a visual essay analyzing creative processes and formulas in art. The work includes topics such as insight, kitsch and copyright. Both content and form are inspired by neuroscience, biology, and logic.
