10/6/14 (Monday)On Monday we talked about Alfred Wegner who was a scientist in the early
1900’s. Alfred Wegener had a hypothesis that the world was once a large land form
called Pangaea. Alfred Wegener had decided that the continents were once one land
mass by collecting evidence. We discovered that Wegener learned this by looking at coal
deposits, mountain ranges (Land formations), and even tree fossils. He wondered why
all of the continents seemed to fit together and in this he found his answer. We also had
homework of entering key terms that we believed fit together with the topic. Over all,
Monday was a day full of learning because we learned about who came up with claim
and evidence to prove that Pangaea was once a real landform.
10/7/14 (Tuesday)On Tuesday we created a CERC which is a graphic organizer in other words.
This organizer was about Alfred Wegner, the same guy we’d learned about on
Monday. Yet this time we had to define what his question was, what his claim was,
what his evidence was, what reasoning he had, and last but not least we had to
come up with a connecting sentence along with a counter point. Turns out his
question were, “Why do all the continents seem to fit together?” And his evidence
was Land Forms, Fossils, and Climates. For example, Africa is quite a peculiar place
for glaciers to be found considering its warm climate and tropical heat waves. Alfred
cracked this case by saying that it could be a left over glacier from when Pangaea
separated. Sadly, Alfred never got the fame and glory he rightfully disserved for
coming up with this claim. Simply because he couldn’t explain why the continents,
“Drifted,” apart and so Science rejected his idea.
10/8/14 (Wednesday)On Wednesday, we had a delayed opening yet we still got to
learn about Harry Hess. Harry Hess was a scientist who re-examined
Wegener’s theory about the “Continental Drift”. Harry Hess came up
with his own theory. He kept what Wegener had discovered and put his
own spin on it. Harry came up with something he liked to call, “SeaFloor Spreading,” Harry believed that the sea floor would crack open
and molten rock or magma would spew from the crack pushing the old
crust away from the new. He would discover the first real explanation
of “Continental Drift,” In fact we were assigned definitions to help us
understand Sea-Floor spreading and its backround.
10/9/14 (Thursday)Finally, on Thursday we did the same as we did with Wegener two days before, we created a
CERC organizer. Turns out, they had similar claims considering that they were basically trying to explain
the same thing. We read pages in the text book and then we filled it out. All in all everything we did this
week was awesomely fun and interactive.
