Calculus I CIHS Program Math 2231 Instructor: Tara Kern Email: [email protected] Credits: 4 Textbook: Calculus: Early Transcendental Functions; 4th Edition; Robert T. Smith & Roland B. Minton Required Materials: Graphing Calculator (recommended – TI-84 plus, TI-84 plus C, or TI-89) Course Description: This course is a first in a sequence of courses designed to cover limits, continuity, differentiation and integration of algebraic and trigonometric functions, and applications of derivatives. Prerequisites: MATH1106 and MATH110, or MATH1113 Goals and Objectives: Students will be able to: Describe and find limits of algebraic and trigonometric functions, evaluate limits at a point and infinity in relation to asymptotic behavior, and relate limits to continuity and discontinuity. Apply the various notations of derivatives and use the limit of the difference quotient to evaluate derivatives. Use the rules for taking derivatives including power rule, product rule, quotient rule, chain rule, and rule for taking derivatives implicitly. Find the average value of a non-linear function. Graph functions and relations using concepts from algebra as well as continuity, asymptotic and end behavior, regions of increasing/decreasing, extrema, inflections, and concavity. Use anti-derivatives to find indefinite integrals and find the anti-derivative of various exact functions and use substitution to integrate. Evaluate definite integrals, derive and evaluate the area using a definite integral and volumes of rotation. Apply exponentials and logarithms to growth/decay problems; apply inverses as they relate to derivative forms, and apply inverse techniques to the derivatives of the trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions. Solve real-world applications and optimization problems using problem solving and critical thinking skills and analyze the results. Demonstrate appropriate use of technology to solve mathematical problems and to reinforce course objectives listed above. Homework Assignments: Homework will be assigned from each section/chapter and I encourage you to work together. Homework from the entire chapter will be handed in on the day of the test. Each section of homework will be worth 3 points. If the section is completed and work is shown, you will receive 3 points. If most of the section is there (3/4) or work is not shown, you will receive 2 points. If you have completed some of the assignment (1/4-3/4) and work is not shown, you will receive 1 point. If you don’t have a section of homework or you have completed less than a quarter of the assignment, you will receive 0 points for the section. In order to do well in class, you will need to complete all homework assignments. Quizzes and Exams: Every Friday, there will be a quiz at the beginning of class that covers the sections covered from that week. You will need to show your work in order to receive full credit or partial credit for incorrect answers on quizzes. The quizzes will vary in length and points each week. Your two lowest quiz scores will be dropped from your final semester grade. Your one lowest quiz score will be dropped to calculate your quarter grade. There will 100 point tests after each chapter and a 150 point comprehensive final exam. The questions will be similar to the homework assignments and quizzes. You will need to show your work in order to receive partial credit for incorrect answers on tests. In order to do well on the tests, you will need to complete all homework assignments. Grades: Grades for this course will be based upon homework, quizzes, tests, and a comprehensive final exam. The following grading scale will be used to determine grades: A -- 90 – 100 % B -- 80 – 89 % C -- 70 – 79 % D -- 60 – 69 % F -- Below 60 % Absenses/Tardies: Tardy is defined as being late to class. If you will be late, bring a pass. If you are absent, bring an Admit Slip from the office the next time you are in class. IMPORTANT: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what was learned on the days you were gone. Find someone who took notes and copy them. If you don’t understand something in the notes, come ask me for help. If homework was collected, you will turn in the assignment when you return to school and make an appointment to take the test that was missed. Find out the homework assignment by asking a classmate, looking at the assignment board, or asking me. If you are absent on a Friday, you will have to either 1) take the quiz early if you know ahead of time you will be gone or 2) make up the quiz the following week before or after school. If the quiz is not made up within one week of being absent, the quiz score will be counted as a 0. Remember, I will drop your two lowest quiz scores at the end of the semester. Academic Integrity: Students are expected to practice at the highest standards of ethics, honesty, and integrity in all of their academic work. Any form of academic dishonesty (plagiarism, cheating, etc) may result in disciplinary action. Cheating will not be tolerated in my classroom. If I suspect or catch you cheating: 1st Offense 2nd Offense --- Zero for the assignment, quiz, or test and detention Expulsion from class, a failing grade, and detention If you need help, PLEASE come get it. I am available before school, after school and during my prep hour. I am more than happy to put in my half by helping you if you put in your half by actively trying to learn. Lastly, be respectful to your classmates, to me, and to yourself. If you don’t show respect to others, don’t expect it in return.
