Gift: Character Beatty: Beatty is full of ironies. He taunts Montag yet feels remorse over what may
happen to him. “Beatty is torn between his conscious of what is right and his duty as a fireman. He uses
an allusion about Icarus flying close to the sun in reference to Montag, orwhen he shouts, “ Why don’t
you belch Shakespeare at me..”. This shows Beatty’s knowledge of illegal books but also reveals his
imagination, a characteristic few other citizens have.
