and drinks will be provided. Please bring enough
to serve 10-12 people. Dinner will start at 5:00
p.m., and the concert at 6:00 p.m. Bring a
blanket or chair to sit on the lawn, or you can sit

a great way to end the summer! See you there.

On Sunday, September 6, we will worship outside in our new courtyard area.
The worship service will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will be followed by a brunch.

COME WORSHIP WITH US
“Open Hearts - Open Minds - Open Arms”
August 30, 2009
Occasionally it comes down to bits
and pieces. As you can understand,
as a preacher, I gather words. I
gather words and phrases and ideas
and thoughts, and put them in places that I can go to when
needing to eat from the buffet table. So here is a little bit …
CREDO and CARDIA.
The word for “I believe” in Latin is “credo.” But the root of the
word “credo” is “cardia” the word for “heart.” When we say we
believe something, we usually mean with our mind. But a
conviction of opinion that can be founded on reason can be sold
for reason and another opinion could shake us out of our belief.
But if you believe with your heart, well then you are much
further down the road on what you really believe.
WITH ALL YOUR HEARTS
There is prayer in the Judeo-Christian experience that asks us to
“Love the Lord your God with all hearts and with all …”
And the question comes up about why the line says “hearts” in
the plural. After all who has two hearts?
Well, as it turns out we all have two hearts.
We have a love for things that are good for us.
And a love for things that are bad for us.
And the real challenge in life is to take our negative urges and
turn them to good. We cannot deny having them, but we can
put them to good use.
That gives us something to chew on …
I believe that First Christian Church of Orange is filled with
people with big hearts . . . hearts that are compassionate and
caring and pumping in the service of others. Look at all the
opportunities before you in the next few weeks . . . and you
will discover once again why we are “church.” And whatever
our inclinations, we strive to stay on track with what God
wishes for us …
See you in church,
Stanley D. Smith
Senior Pastor
10 a.m. in the Sanctuary
This may be the most difficult of all of the Progressive
points. It calls us to sacrificial love. Point #8 - By calling
ourselves progressive, we mean that we are Christians who
recognize that being followers of Jesus is costly, and entails selfless
love, conscientious resistance to evil, and renunciation of
privilege.
Scripture: Mark 10:17-23
We invite you to come and worship, sing and enjoy the
friendship of this loving congregation. Worship leadership
includes Eileen Vincent, Stan Smith, Olivia Updegrove,
Dean Shepherd, Phil Chap, and others.

LABOR DAY SUNDAY
9:OO a.m. in the Courtyard
(NOTE THE TIME CHANGE)
But be “doers” of the word, not merely “hearers” who
deceive themselves. Active engagement, righteous work,
Godly activity are all part of the Christian life. And we
often talk about how we spend our money, but don’t talk
much about how we make our money. The Letter of James,
calling us to embody our faith through good works, is a
magnificent letter to read. Imagine it is written specifically
to you!
Scripture: James 1:17-27
Worship leadership includes David and Bev Weatherill,
Stan Smith, Olivia Updegrove, Dean Shepherd, Phil
Chap, and others.

WELCOMING SUNDAY
10 a.m. in the Sanctuary
The juxtaposition of the text from James with Mark’s
story of the healing of the Syro-Phoenician woman reveals a
wicked sense of humor on someone’s part. James is adamant
about showing no partiality in human relationships, and
Jesus seems to engage in just this behavior in the text from
Mark. It’s a bit of a puzzle. Come help unravel it...
Scripture: James 2:1-17; Mark 7:24-37
We invite you to come and worship, sing and enjoy the
friendship of this loving congregation. Worship leadership
includes Alisa Mittelstaedt, Penny Fraumeni, Stan Smith,
Olivia Updegrove, Dean Shepherd, Phil Chap, and others.

Searchers’ Class Series Returns
The “seniors” meet every Sunday at 9:00 a.m. to learn,
fellowship and share together. They call themselves the
SEARCHERS and are indeed life-long learners of the faith.
They believe “If you are able to see God in dynamic new
ways, you will be able to see yourself and your potential in
dynamic new says.”
The Fall Series will begin on Sunday, September 13, with a
STUDY OF THE BOOK OF ACTS, a six-week series of
lessons to be presented to the Searchers’ Class. You are
invited to attend and participate. Roy Bullock will present
the lessons.
The members go out to lunch on the fist Sunday of each
month, have occasional parties and pray together. Facilitators
are Bev Weatherill and Pat Messenger.

Plan to attend and enjoy a variety of stimulating and
enriching workshops, inspiring worship opportunities and a
challenging speaker.

Help Feed our
Kids and Youth
No, really . . . we are going to
try something new for Sunday
evening youth meals. We are
still going to have parents sign up to bring a meal and to help
serve, but since several families have multiple kids, and with
the current economic times, we need help.
Would you be willing to provide a part of dinner on
Sunday evening for our kids and youth? If so, please e-mail
Olivia and she will help provide possible options.
The next Church Life deadline will be
Monday, August 31.
(This is a week earlier than originally scheduled.)
