Development Annual Report 2011
A Message from Lynn S. Weill
Dear Friends,
This year, we are writing another chapter in Woman’s ever-growing
history book. It all began with a bright idea – an idea to build a hospital
solely for caring for women and infants in the community. The past 43
years have been storied, with all of life’s great moments having been
experienced here – from the joy that comes with new life to the renewal
that comes with a second chance at life.
But Woman’s has evolved to become so much more than a place focused
only on delivering babies and treating cancer. Since our founders’
dreams were realized, Woman’s has made it a priority to address
profound problems in our community that affect women and babies:
•Poverty. Baton Rouge has replaced New Orleans as the most populated
metropolitan area in Louisiana; it is now the city with the highest
concentration of poor people in the state, with a poverty rate that has
soared by roughly 22 percent over the past decade.
•Infant Prematurity. Louisiana ranks second in the nation in low birth
weight babies and infant mortality. Louisiana has the third highest
rate of premature births in the country. A low breastfeeding rate
compounds this problem, with only 49 percent of Louisiana mothers
breastfeeding their children, compared to 75 percent nationally.
•HIV/AIDS. Baton Rouge has the second highest rate of new HIV/AIDS
cases in the country.
•Sexual Assault. Approximately one in six women will be victims of
sexual assault.
•Diabetes. Women with gestational diabetes have a 50 to 70 percent
chance of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in the
course of their lifetimes. The gestational diabetes rate in Louisiana is
double the national average.
•Breast Cancer. Baton Rouge has the highest average annual incidence
rate of breast cancer in Louisiana.
Your generosity helps us to address these healthcare challenges
that plague our community, challenges that are often rooted on
a deeper, socioeconomic level. For example, many women who
used the Mobile Mammography Coach in recent months lost
their jobs due to the weak economy – and they lost their health
insurance coverage as well. Several women who take part in the
Mother-to-Child HIV Transmission Prevention program were
infected with the disease during their own births, and the disease
threatens to deny them healthy children of their own. And most
of the sick infants and children receiving pediatric home care are
living in poverty.
Woman’s community programs help to stop these healthcare
challenges from growing into even larger long-term problems.
Without your continued support, these programs could be
reduced in scope or eliminated due to Medicaid reductions
and state budget issues.
We could not have written Woman’s incredible story thus
far without the many individuals, businesses, foundations
and groups that have helped us fulfill our mission, and
there simply aren’t enough words to describe our gratitude.
We thank you and ask for your continued help in
improving the health of women and infants as we have
done for the past 43 years and will do for the next.
Sincerely,
Lynn S. Weill
Vice President, Chief Development Officer

What is Woman’s worth?
About Woman’s
What is Woman’s worth to the new mother who cries
tears of joy when she brings her baby girl home from
the NICU? What is Woman’s worth to the sick child who
is able to be tucked in his own bed at home while he
recovers? What is Woman’s worth to the sexual assault
victim who now feels comforted during her most
traumatizing moment? What is Woman’s worth to
other women just like her, who can feel safer now that
another criminal is behind bars? What is Woman’s worth
to the woman who couldn’t afford a mammogram,
whose disease was caught and treated at just the right
time? What is Woman’s worth to the baby who wasn’t
born with HIV, whose mere existence could change the
world? With philanthropic support, Woman’s invested
more than $27 million in 2011 through programs that
address healthcare issues in our community – including
$17 million in care for medically indigent patients – but
Woman’s true worth to those it has helped over the past
four decades cannot be quantified. What is Woman’s
worth to you?
2 Woman’s Development Report 2011
Woman’s continues its pledge to provide “exceptional care” focused
on our patients and the community. What began more than 43
years ago has become the regional leader in serving mothers, babies
and women in all stages of life.
Pregnancy and Childbirth
Woman’s is best known for its comprehensive pregnancy and
childbirth services, including high-quality labor and delivery
services, exceptional care for infants, breastfeeding support and an
array of educational programs. In addition, we also provide care for
women experiencing high-risk pregnancies, as well as services for
low birth weight babies and high-risk newborns.
Wellness and Prevention
Helping women feel great and live well is one of our top
priorities. Woman’s offers a range of wellness programs, classes
and counseling services, as well as GI endoscopy and testing for
osteoporosis and heart disease. Woman’s also provides extensive
opportunities for mammography, not only at our main campus
and Wellness Center but also throughout 18 parishes by way of our
Mobile Mammography Coach.
Treatment and Care
Woman’s is proud to offer a multitude of services beyond
childbirth. We provide women’s cancer treatment; breast,
gynecological and general surgery; diagnostic testing; colonoscopy;
weight loss surgery; orthopedic surgery and more – all tailored to
meet the specific needs of women.

The Schwartzenburgs
The Schwartzenburg name is synonymous with bringing thousands of
babies into the world. For Dr. Ellis Schwartzenburg and his wife, Barbara,
Woman’s Hospital has become yet another bundle of joy in their lives;
one they have seen grow to great heights over the years, not only through
a dedicated staff and a focused mission, but also through philanthropic
support and volunteerism.
Dr. Schwartzenburg’s commitment to Woman’s mission – to improve the
health of women and infants – extends far beyond fulfilling his duties
as an OB/GYN. He and Barbara have made significant contributions
to Woman’s for many years as Charter Life Members of Founders and
Friends since its inception in 1999 as well as through the Annual Giving
Campaign and the Woman’s Victory Open golf tournament.
“Woman’s Hospital is a place where many of us have experienced those
true gifts in life, those being the birth of our children and grandchildren
and physical healing, which we will all need at some time in our lives.”
Barbara said.
And when that time came for Barbara, who was diagnosed with breast
cancer several years ago, she experienced firsthand the exceptional care
for which Woman’s is known. Serving as chair in 2011 and honorary chair
in 2008, Barbara has played an integral part in the Woman’s Victory Open,
which raises funds for Woman’s breast cancer outreach and education
programs, and is always looking for more ways to get involved.
Dr. Schwartzenburg served on Woman’s Board of Directors for nine years,
as Chairman in 2006 and Vice-chairman in 2005. He served as Chief of
Staff in 1999. He is also a member of the Woman’s Hospital Foundation.
“We feel it is important to support Woman’s Hospital because we want
its legacy to continue, and we want it be to a place where everyone’s best
memories can be ‘delivered’ and shared,” Dr. Schwartzenburg said.

Robin and Baby Kaynan
There were no rattles waiting for him at home; there were addictive
painkillers in prescription bottles – and for this innocent baby boy, a
future of being raised behind one of society’s darkest doors.
Born to an OxyContin-addicted mother, Kaynan* was removed from
his mother’s custody by Child Protective Services and placed in the
care of his grandmother, Robin*, who provided him with what his
biological mother could not: a safe home and tender loving care.
But all the TLC in the world couldn’t soothe the intense drug
withdrawals. OxyContin is an effective, long-lasting pain reliever
when used correctly under a prescribed dosage. But when the drug
is snorted, smoked or injected, it produces a powerful, quick high
comparable to heroin; the withdrawals are equally intense. The high is
one of the highest, and the low is one of the lowest.
With his violent outbursts – including kicking, screaming and
vomiting – little Kaynan felt the excruciating withdrawal pains
immediately after his birth. It was overwhelming for Robin, whose
only child-rearing experience was with Kaynan’s mother more than 20
years ago.
“I thought, somebody shake me and wake me up from this nightmare.
And then Pediatric Home Care did that for me,” Robin said.
Their gas tanks often run on empty, but their fuel is never drained.
Woman’s pediatric home health nurses are driven to help those who
can’t help themselves: sick children in the Baton Rouge community.
Woman’s Pediatric Home Care is the largest provider of pediatric
home health in this area, covering a 25-mile radius. Nineteen nurses
make approximately 8,500 healthcare visits to children each year. With
continued support from the community, Pediatric Home Care can help
thousands of children grow up to be healthy adults.
Nurse Melissa Petite has been working to help Robin painstakingly
wean six-week-old Kaynan off his OxyContin addiction. The tremors
have begun to subside. His tense body has begun to relax. He is finally
starting to cry less and sleep more.
Robin credits her friends, John and Dee, with helping her get through
this ordeal. She now counts Melissa as a friend, too.
“I have Melissa’s personal cell phone number.
I call her constantly, and she helps me even
when she’s not working,” Robin said. “The
support system at Woman’s is truly amazing.
Everyone saw how destroyed I was, and
they’re helping me through it.”
“You can’t go out into the community and
see what we see and not have a heart,” Jill
Comeaux, Home Care RN, said. “Without
community support for this program, there
will be babies who won’t make it.”
Highly trained to provide everything from parental education to
injections to wound care, these nurses are the reason why Woman’s
Pediatric Home Care has one of the lowest re-hospitalization rates in
the country, meaning that children get well at home and aren’t in and
out of the hospital.
“These children have nowhere else to go,” Claudia Cantwell, director
of Home Care, said. “We are one of the very few home health agencies
that care for children, and those that do often don’t last very long.
They don’t maintain their service for children because Medicaid
reimbursement levels are too low to make it worth their time.”
But at Woman’s, every child, no matter their family’s financial status,
is worth the time. Approximately 40 to 60 percent of Woman’s home
care children are on Medicaid. Though the need for additional funds
is increasing, Woman’s has not received a reimbursement increase and
multiple cuts have been implemented over the past 15 years.
6 On the cover: Kaynan and his grandmother, Robin.

Ty McMains
There are two very special days in his son’s life: August 28, Kaplan’s
birthday, and November 21, the day he went home from Woman’s
Hospital. For those doing the math, that’s an 86-day difference. Even
a decade later, Ty McMains will never forget what it felt like to have a
child in the Newborn and Infant Intensive Care Unit.
“I’ll never forget those sounds in the unit – the dings, the beeps and
the buzzes – the sounds of the equipment that kept him alive.” Ty said.
“We didn’t hear Kaplan cry until he was six weeks old.”
Weighing just two pounds and one ounce, Kaplan needed a respirator
to breathe and a feeding tube to eat. And while some new parents may
worry about their baby’s heel sticks and immunizations, Ty and his
family agonized over Kaplan’s surgeries and infections.
“None of our peers experienced this. It was all so foreign to us, not to
mention frantic and overwhelming. We relied so much on the caring,
compassionate staff at Woman’s to get us through such a difficult time.”
After Kaplan’s release from the NICU, Ty and his family made a
significant gift to the NICU to help other children receive the same
exceptional care as Kaplan. For the past two years, Ty has served as
a volunteer solicitor for the Annual Giving Campaign’s Major Gifts
division. In addition to being a donor to the Annual Giving Campaign,
Ty is also a member of Founders and Friends.
Now 10 years old, Ty describes Kaplan as “the sweetest honor roll
student who loves playing sports and being a big brother! I thank
Woman’s daily for saving his life.”

Anica Doyle
Nothing can stop Anica Doyle. Not even breast cancer. She has an
unwavering appreciation for life – and an appreciation for those who
are saving hers.
Anica’s “speedbump” (as she chooses to call it) began when she
discovered a visible lump in her breast while taking a shower. “It
had been about five years since I had my last mammogram, but
this lump seemed to have appeared overnight. I was really worried
because I knew something wasn’t right.”
Anica drove to a parking lot in Mid-City the next day where she
received a mammogram in Woman’s Mobile Mammography Coach,
which provides free breast screening services to uninsured women.
“Everything happened so fast,” she said. “The staff informed me I
had cancer, but I felt safe knowing that Woman’s already had the
ball rolling from day one.”
That rolling ball includes everything from scheduling appointments
with her oncologist to meetings with a registered dietitian to help
her better tolerate food during treatment. “Woman’s is taking care of
everything. They lifted such a big worry off my shoulders.”
Support groups have also made cancer easier for her. “It’s
enlightening to meet women who are breast cancer survivors for
more than 30 years. They are doing well. Woman’s gave them hope.”
From the very beginning, Anica has felt like she isn’t the only one
fighting her disease. “I include my doctors and nurses in my prayers,
and everyone at Woman’s who has helped me along the way. They
are my guides through all of this.”
Today, Anica is undergoing chemotherapy, but her real therapy is
helping others in her same situation. “It’s so important to uplift
other women with cancer. I tell them, embrace your bald head.
Connect with people you love. Appreciate your life – and live it!”

With the generous help and support from the community, Woman’s was able to provide the following
vital services and programs for women and babies in 2011:
Women:
•Provided 1,325 follow-up treatment visits for women with gestational diabetes, insulin resistance and prediabetes through the Metabolic Health Clinic.
•Provided 13,262 inpatient lactation coaching visits to new mothers.
•Provided treatment for 60 percent of all known sexual assault victims who presented themselves to a
healthcare facility in the community for treatment – more than any other hospital in the area.
Women with Cancer:
•Screened more than 5,300 women on the Mobile Mammography Coach for breast cancer at 100 locations
in 18 parishes. More than 60 percent of the women screened were indigent, and in the rural parishes this
increased to 90 percent.
•Provided more than 1,000 inpatient social services visits to women with gynecologic cancer and 141
women with breast cancer.
•Provided 211 inpatient dietary consultations and 143 inpatient nutritional follow-up visits to women
with gynecologic or breast cancer.
•Provided support group programs for 152 women living with gynecologic or breast cancer.
• Provided for a breast cancer navigator to guide 210 breast cancer patients through treatment.
Babies:
•Made more than 16,000 home health visits, of which over 8,500 were for children. Approximately 40 to
60 percent of these children were underinsured or indigent.
•Provided individualized education and treatment for HIV/AIDS infected pregnant women, resulting in
reduced mother-to-child-transmission rates. Since 2005, Woman’s Hospital has not had a positive baby
born to a mother enrolled in the Mother-to-Child HIV Transmission Prevention program.
Care for ALL Women and Babies:
•Nearly 60 percent of the babies born at Woman’s are to Medicaid recipients – more than double the
number born at any other hospital in Louisiana.
•In an effort to meet the needs of all women and babies in our community, Woman’s range of programs
and services reached many of the underserved and uninsured. In 2011 alone, these vital community
services created a shortage of more than $27 million.
•Of this shortage, Woman’s provided more than $17 million in care for Medicaid patients for which there
was no reimbursement.
Community support helped make these programs and services possible.

Woman’s New Campus Gifts Initiative was established to seek philanthropic
support from the community to add several critical components back into the new replacement hospital that will
further enhance technology, provide an unprecedented patient experience, and, more importantly, help save
lives. In 2008, when construction on the new campus was halted due to the economic downturn that affected
the nation and our state, fiscally prudent changes through rescaling were made to the size and scope of Woman’s
original vision to reduce the project budget. Generous philanthropic support will allow us to restore a number of
these elements that will add to the healthcare delivery system for women and babies now and in the future.

Annual Giving
Annual Giving
Annual Giving.
The Annual Giving Campaign is conducted yearly to raise funds for specific programs
and services centered on women, babies, and women with cancer that are meeting vital community needs. These
programs are addressing critical health-care issues head-on and serving a significant percentage of Medicaid
and indigent patients. Without philanthropic support, these programs are at risk of being reduced or eliminated.
Including the Employee Campaign, the Annual Giving Campaign raised over $419,000.

Volunteer Leadership
Founders and Friends Endowment
Founders and Friends Endowment. Founders and Friends was established in 1999
to build an endowment to support Woman’s Hospital and its ability for generations to come to improve the health
of women and infants. It is comprised of individuals who have made or have notified Woman’s Hospital of their
intent to make a planned gift through their estate plans. Donors who have made outright gifts of $10,000+ to the
endowment are also recognized as Founders and Friends.
