 Stone statues of architecture were popular during Middle
Ages
 Found on churches, cathedrals and castles
 Religious figures were inside the church, gargoyles were only
found on the outside
 Why were gargoyles on churches?
o Scare people into being good
o Ward off evil
o Draining water off the building
o Decoration
-Gargoyle’s can be people, animals, mythical creatures, or
angels.
-Stone carvers used hammers, chisels, and drills to
create the statues.
-Stone carvings were done on the ground.
-Women were not allowed to carve statues years ago.
-The smallest gargoyle is found on top of Notre Dame
created by a Nun at a church. It was a small angelic
figure.
-Rules must have been followed to create statues of
holy people.
-There were no rules for creating gargoyles (sculptors
could do whatever they wanted).
