The Classical Academy High School
Oklahoma!
May 21-24, 2014
Classical Academy mounted a superb production of Oklahoma! Oklahoma is an iconic
show that first came out in 1943. It was the first musical written by the team of composer
Richard Rogers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II. Set in pre-statehood Oklahoma
territory, the show explores romantic relationships, in the midst of farmer and cowboy
squabbles. The handsome Curley (Jonathan Norwood/Christian Winter) wants to get
together with the beautiful Laurie (Jessica Jolley/Cassandra Bleher), but his prideful
nature stops him from coming right out and saying it. Laurie holds her own by feigning
equal ambivalence. She uses farmhand Jud (Noah Farmer/Caleb Arend), and Curley
uses annoying-voice Gertie (Grace Taylor) to make the other jealous. But Jud is not a
man to be trifled with.
Meanwhile, Ado Annie (Kristyn Roberts/Emily Sturges) takes up with the peddler Ali
Hakim (Noah Castillero/Jared Thornburg), while her steady Will Parker (Nick
DeChicchis/Anthony Escobedo) is away in Kansas City. After Will’s return, Hakim
amusingly helps Parker marry Ado Annie. But Hakim may end up in a shotgun wedding
after all.
I was happy to see that the show was double-cast giving students extra opportunities.
This production was serenely pleasing to the senses. To begin with, the dulcet singing tones of crowd-favorite Jonathan
Norwood were sublime. Christian Winter’s easy-going charm and charisma was award worthy. Jessica Jolley has the whole
package, and performed like a professional. Cassandra Bleher was truly astounding, with a voice of an angel. Shockingly, she is
only a freshman! (Kudos to the director for casting a freshman in the lead!!) There were many other standouts in this cast, and not
enough space in this review to list them all, but I must say that Noah Castillero was hilarious, and I loved watching him perform.
The sets were breathtaking and big. Rick Deussen, Dan Castillero, Rodney Palmer and the rest of the set crew outdid themselves.
The costumes were spectacular pieces of eye-candy. Jill Sturges and Kathy Pancarik, and their assistants provided the audience
with colorful character-suited clothing.
The choreography was advanced. The dream sequence was particularly mesmerizing! But the sheer number of actors in the
ensemble dances made the show pop with energy! Bobbi Adams is to be commended.
Jennifer McCormick acted as Director and
Co-Music Director. She was superb at both.
Along with Meredith Hopkins they taught
beautiful harmonies to a large cast.
The show had a very good pace, was perfectly
cast, had wonderful energy and movement, and
pleasant blocking.
There were also many lovely voices with
sporadic solo lines in the ensemble. I looked
them up and found that they are not seniors.
So, Classical Academy’s next year looks
promising. According to their program, they
will be doing Shrek. I, for one, will be going to
see it!!

Mt. Carmel Theatre at the Mount
Cheaper by the Dozen
October 9-18, 2014
THE SHOW:
Adapted by Christopher Sergel from the 1948 autobiographical book by Frank and Ernestine Gilbreth.
Narrated by the two children who wrote the book the play is based upon, Cheaper by the Dozen tells the story of growing up in the
1920s in a household of a dozen siblings. At the center of it is a tribute to their father, Mr. Gilbreth (when people asked him about
having so many kids, his standing joke was that they were cheaper by the dozen). The story takes us through the kind of stories
many families can relate to including quite a bit on the frustrations of the girls trying to date with an overprotective father, as well
as the humorous quirks caused by this particular father’s obsession with logistics and efficiency. Vigorous dishwashing training
involves cutting out all unnecessary movements. The kids have a record player in the bathroom so that they can get their foreign
language lessons while brushing their teeth so no time is wasted. But it’s not until later that the kids learn that all this is caused by
more than their father’s career, and the more personal reason why he feels each second is so precious. In the end, it’s a charming
story about family.
THE PRODUCTION:
Director Diane Jones begins her last of many seasons
at Mt. Carmel High School with this genuine and
heartfelt production of Cheaper by the Dozen. The
professional-looking quaint, clean, and orderly house
set by Bob Lindwall frames it nicely. Debbie
Waldschmidt’s 1920s-era clothing helps complete the
transportation to an earlier time. The attention to detail
goes beyond what’s clearly visible to the audience
member. They created a wood checkerboard and pieces
as a prop just to help the actors on stage feel more in
the moment of the 1920s through all they see and touch
on stage.
That cast includes Gabi Zepeda as Ernestine
and Isaac Lopez as Frank getting us going and taking

us through the story as the narrators. They both dive into telling
embarrassing or funny family stories just like any siblings eager to
tell embarrassing or funny family stories. They also combine for a
great skit in the living room as they imitate their parents, much to
the amusement of their siblings and parents. Those parents
include Winter Sherrod in a great performance as the kind and
more easygoing mother. Reed Wagner is the father and focal point
of the story, and he gives a remarkably realistic, nuanced portrayal
as he tries to run a tight ship, tries to deal with dating daughters and
changing ways, all while hoping to maintain a warm, loving
family.
There are many strong performances a few of which include Claire
Keefer as the frustrated Anne fighting for the right to silk
stockings and dating without her brother as chaperone, Jason
Goldfarb as brother Bill the chaperone, and Zachary Crook as
would-be date Joe Scales who walks into the house with confidence, humor and charisma, but changes his tune as Mr. Gilbreth
makes demands like a brother as a chaperone. Overall it’s an ensemble production, and it’s the easy and natural interaction between
all the many siblings and their parents that makes this production relatable, humorous, and ultimately very touching.
