Lesson 5-3
Multiplying a Decimal by a
Decimal Using Models
 Glue
 Scissors
 Map Colors
Process Standard:
5.1D - communicate mathematical ideas, reasoning, and their
implications using multiple representations, including symbols,
diagrams, graphs, and language as appropriate
Standard:
5.3D - represent multiplication of decimals with products to the
hundredths using objects and pictorial models, including area
models
Use a model to find the product of 0.3 × 0.5.
Step 1 – Color the 1st factor
vertically.
Step 2 – Color the 2nd factor
horizontally.
Step 3 – The product is the
part where the colors overlap.
Use a model to find the product of 1.2 × 0.4.
Use a model to find the product of 0.6 × 0.7.
Use a model to find the product of 0.5 × 1.3.
Use a model to find the product of 0.6 × 1.7.
0.3 × 0.5=0.15
0.6 ×1.7=1.02
1.2 × 0.4=0.48
1.1 × 0.3=0.33
0.6 × 0.7=0.42
0.8 × 0.9=0.72
0.5 × 1.3=0.65
0.06 × 0.4=0.024
Place the decimal point in the product.
1. 0.5 × 0.4 = 20
2. 0.07 × 0.3 = 21
3. 1.7 × 0.5 = 85
4. 1.2 × 0.06 = 72
Solve to find the product.
5. 1.9 × 0.4
6. 0.2 × 0.09
Solve to find the product.
7. 2.8 × 0.6
8. 0.3 × 3.4
