Hi! Happy New Year! It has been a while since we have sent out an update with the snow days and break. *In Math the students learned how to divide using partial quotients. (If you are interested there is a Power Point on partial quotients on my website on the top right of the Math page.) I know this method seems "weird" to us (adults) but it really does make more sense to most children. They are looking at the whole number instead of individual digits. I will show the students the regular algorithm on Monday (we did not get to it today) and we will learn about factors, multiples, prime, and composite next week. The students can choose what division method works best for them. They will not be required to all use the same method. -Please encourage your child to do xtramath 4 times every week. *In LA we will be starting our grammar packets again next week. Remember they are due every Thursday. We will also be doing the annual Spelling Bee next week. On Monday students will get a list and on Tuesday I will give them a written test. The top 10 spellers, from each class, will get a second list. They will be tested on Thursday orally. Each class will have 1 winner and 1 alternate. The Riverside 4th & 5th grade Spelling Bee is on January 19 at Buckeye Elementary at 4pm. We will also be starting our nonfiction reading unit. I have started collecting nonfiction books and have shown them to the students. They seem excited. -Please remind your child to complete their reading logs each week. *We started learning about ecosystems, habitat, and population this week in Science. We will continue learning about ecosystems next week. *In Social Studies we are moving west in our development towards Ohio becoming a state. Great job on all of the projects! *Report Cards from the second quarter will be posted on Infinite Campus on Tuesday, Jan. 10. Please remember to check your child’s grades during the quarter. Grades are updated at least every 2 weeks. *Thank you for all of the donations to Project Hope! Your generosity is greatly appreciated! *Some students have lost or used their supplies. Please ask your child if they need pencils, pens, expo markers, scissors, glue, crayons, folders, etc. at school. Many students are in need of new pencils. THANK YOU!! *In December we had visits from the RHS choir and from the Lamuth Middle School band. The children really enjoyed these performances. http://www.riversidelocalschools.com/protected/ArticleView.aspx?iid=50PIUI&dasi=3U30 http://www.riversidelocalschools.com/protected/ArticleView.aspx?iid=502Y3Y&dasi=3U30 *Hidden in Plain Sighthttp://www.riversidelocalschools.com/protected/ArticleView.aspx?iid=5020G2&dasi=3U30 Upcoming EventsJan. 10 MASCO Meeting at 6:30pm Jan 13 Father-Daughter Dance at Madison Avenue Jan. 16 No School- Martin Luther King Day As always if you have any questions please contact us.
