I am delighted that our focus week has encouraged the pupils to become more independent in their endeavour and practice habits—I heard that one young pianist was regularly getting himself up at 5.30am which might of course have upset those who wished to sleep! Thursday's informal concert featured soloists from Chaucer and Austen and a lively version of Grieg’s “In the Hall 1 of the Mountain King”. We have been singing for Porchlight on the streets of Canterbury for the past few years. 2 Our children in Years 1 to 6 are now using Mathletics, which is described as “the next generation in learning” as it helps students enjoy maths and achieve great results. About Mathletics Mathletics is a web-based programme which integrates home and school learning via the internet. It is syllabus-based from Nursery to Year 12 and is currently used by 100,000 students every day. Mathletics was founded in Australia and is now well-established in Canada, USA, UK, South Africa and New Zealand so that thousands of students in schools around the world are accessing the site every day! Your child has 24-hour access to Mathletics by using a unique user name and password. We recommend that you spend time looking at the programme with your child so that you can gain the greatest understanding of how Mathletics will benefit your child. Benefits of Mathletics Children love Mathletics! Children are engaged and motivated to learn. Mathletics is adaptive which means that it responds to the individual child’s strengths and weaknesses. Children instantly know if they are on the right track and can work through the curriculum at their own pace. Animated support guides children through concepts at their own pace which is like having a personal maths tutor 24 hours a day! Live Mathletics fosters a stimulating and exciting online learning community To view Mathletics: Visit www.mathletics.ca Ensure pop-ups are enabled Select sign-in and enter your child’s details My Details (Student to complete): Username...................................................................... Parents are warmly invited to attend. During the week leading up to half term, we shall be focusing on wellbeing amongst children. This is a hot topic in schools and for very good reasons-as there has never been so much reported stress amongst the young. We shall be welcoming to our assembly on Friday 10th February, Imogen Davis who runs the charity, Place2Be. See https://www.place2be.org.uk/our-story/childrens-mentalhealth-week/ for more information. Saxon Assembly… Preps 3C and 3J gave us an entertaining history lesson including the departure of the Romans in 410AD, the arrival of the Saxons and their influence on our culture. We even heard a Saxon rap, strangely reminiscent of John Barnes at Italia ‘90 (a competition which of course ended in a sort of Saxon triumph: West Germany 1 Argentina 0). 5 Headmaster’s Scholar of the Week Spring Term Week 3 (20th January) This week’s award goes to: Toby Doswell in recognition of an excellent Little Red Riding Hood story. Sport U11 A&B Netball v King’s Rochester A Team, Match Reporter - Cherrie Martin On Wednesday, the U11 A Team played a netball match against King’s Rochester. The first quarter ended with a score of 1-0 to us. The goal was scored by Rosa. In the second quarter we tried really hard to win but the quarter ended 1-2 to them. The third quarter began and again we played well with some great passes. The other team were just too good and the score was 2-5 to King’s Rochester. Mrs Brogan-Jones gave us another encouraging team talk and the 4th quarter began. Alas. We lost 3-6. The man of the Match was Daisy. Well played SG. B Team, Match Reporter - Anna Makin As Tiana Brown, who was match reporter for the B Team was unwell today, Anna Makin bravely stepped in and gave a brief recount of the match. U9 A&B Netball v Junior King’s Match Reporter - Elvie Kingham Spring Grove played Junior King’s away. We were a few players short with illness. We played both teams for 8 minutes. We had a confident start in attack and in defence. In the A Team Emmy scored three goals and Anna scored one. We were still strong in defence and we were not tiring. Alice, Celina and Emily were great in attack. After the first quarter, we had a swap around; I was goal shooter and scored 2 goals. Then we played the a team again. We swapped around but I stayed as goal shooter. Phoebe was goal attack, Emmy changed to wing attack and did amazing passes to Phoebe and I surprised myself and the team by scoring 4 more goals! For the last quarter, we played the B team again. Phoebe scored a spectacular goal and I popped another 2 in but I could not have done it without Emmy, Alice, Celina, Anna, Emily and Phoebe. First Match - 4-0 to SG; Second Match - 2-0 to SG; Third Match - 4-1 to SG; Final Match 3-0 to SG Thank you to Miss Drury and Miss Lawrence for taking us. I was lady of the match. And last but not least, three cheers to the first Under 9 math of the season!!! U8 & U9 Rugby v Russell House U9 Team, Match Reporter - Noah Rendo-Castro On Thursday, Spring Grove Under 9 boys played a tag rugby match against Russell House. They got off to a great start with the first try! We went on the counter attack with a super try from Josh. Then Barney scored our second try followed by Charlie with another. At the end, Russell House came back at us with one more try but luckily the final whistle blew leaving SG glorious at 3-2. Man of the Match was Barney. We enjoyed a lovely match tea including chocolate chip cookies and returned home. Thank you to Mr Smith and Mr Russell for their support. 6 SG EXTRA PLEASE COME AND JOIN IN WITH OUR ACTIVITIES IN SG EXTRA THIS TERM After children have made and eaten their tea which they really enjoy doing, we will continue with our planned activities (time permitting.) All children are made very welcome. It is a relaxed, fun atmosphere for the end of the school day. 4.30pm - 6.00pm It would be most helpful if children could be booked in with the office on the days they are wishing to attend. On the Friday of every month we will continue with our cooking activities. It makes a very enjoyable finish to the week for the children and something they can enjoy over the weekend. Children wishing to join us need to be able to stay until 5.45 on a Friday and children must be booked in by the Wednesday please as we need to ensure that there are sufficient ingredients to cater for all children. WE ARE VERY PLEASED TO WELCOME NEW CHILDREN ALONG WITH THE ESTABLISHED CHILDREN Yet more practice required…. We focused on times tables at the start of term, last week we attended to our music and LAMDA practice and now we concentrate on improving our spelling… In addition to weekly spellings, Prep 5s and 6s should examine the lists found in their back of their school homework diaries. If we can match the friendly but intense competition that we witnessed in the House Tables Competition earlier this month, then this Wednesday’s House Spelling Contest should be a terrific and thrilling humdinger! Interesting thoughts on spelling… Is there another word for synonym? Whose idea was it to have an s in lisp? Why has monosyllabic got 5 syllables? Why is it so hard to remember the spelling of mnemonic? Why is ‘big’ smaller than ‘little’? Why is ‘abbreviation’ such a long word? 7 Diary Monday 30th January - Friday 3rd February CONGRATULATIONS Monday 30th Headmaster’s Stars Austen: Sophia Boulden, Charlie Beaugie, Bea Wagstaff, Piers Morrissey, Georgina Wagstaff Chaucer: Sophie Braga-Sullivan, Alexander Starr, Elvie Kingham, Rosa Bowden, Cherrie Martin Conrad: Eleanor Jones, Anna Makin, Robin Cobb, Joseph Evans, James O’Mahoney Dickens: Thomas Borg, Edward McNair, Madeleine Delaney, Luca Toma, Daisy Morris Tuesday 31st Wednesday House Spelling Competition 1st Café de L’Ecole U11 A&B Netball v Ashford (A) U10 & U11 Rugby v Wellesley and Lorenden (A) Qualifying Round - IAPS Swimming at King’s Recreation Centre, Canterbury Swimming Award: Edward Courtenay-Snipp - Level 3, Swimming & Diving Awards: Rosalind, isobel and Eleanor Jones British Judo medal: Josh Desmet Thursday 2nd Friday 3rd Prep 5 & 6 to Wildwood AGM 4.00pm and Governors’ Meeting 5.00pm Headmaster’s Assembly: Rachel van Hoven—Porchlight Happy Birthday… Isla Pickard and Mrs Cox Jelly the Giraffe Congratulations to CONRAD HOUSE for Well done the Greens!
