Revised 2015-16 WHEELER HIGH SCHOOL REVISED ESOL SUMMER Reading List for ESOL grades 10, 11, and 12. Read, reread, and follow instructions. Following instructions is part of the grade. I. Instructions: Choose and read ONE book from the list below. A. Students with English class in the fall and spring semesters MUST read the book the previous summer. B. Be prepared to write an in-class essay the first week of the semester. C. It is ok to watch the movie AND read the book; however, movies leave out much of a GOOD book. II. During the essay, students will use handwritten notes from ONE piece of notebook paper. A. Answer the questions from the Summer Reading Note pages or print and complete. Here are some ideas for notes: notes on the title, author’s name, characters, plot, setting, conflicts, themes, and at least one detailed scene, etc. C. Staple together and give your notes to your English teacher the first day of school. D. THESE NOTES ARE REQUIRED AND WILL BE TURNED IN WITH THE ESSAY. E. Typed and/or cut and pasted notes are NOT acceptable. III. READING PLAN: 74 Days of Summer! A. Mark the calendar: 74 days to read your book from the last day of this school until the first day of school MONDAY, AUGUST 4! B. Divide the total number OF PAGES BY THE TOTAL OF NUMBER OF DAYS LEFT C. Read a few pages every day or more pages every other day or a chapter once a week. IV. Books can be checked out at the local public library (http://www.cobbcat.org/libraries/ ), purchased as used from used bookstores (just Google for used book stores), or even better, buy a new or used book Online at Amazon.com or eBay.com, for example.
