Football Assessment Study Guide SKILL CUES OF THROWING AND CATCHING A FOOTBALL: Throwing: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. With 2-3 fingers on the laces, hold the BALL IN THROWING HAND BY EAR. Face SIDEWAYS TO YOUR TARGET (opposite side facing target) GUIDE ARM POINTING AT TARGET (opposite hand/arm). STEP WITH OPPOSITE FOOT toward target. FLICK WRIST as ball is released to create spiral throw. Catching: 1. Show passer a TARGET to throw to at chest height. 2. Make a TRIANGLE with your hands, with fingers pointing up and not out. 3. CATCH the ball away from your body (elbows at 90 degrees) and bring it in close. SKILL CUES OF PUNTING: 1. LACES UP! Both the laces of the ball and of your shoe. 2. SHOULDERS DOWN! Bend forward to keep shoulders down and ball down by your knees. 3. STEP and plant with opposite foot. 4. DROP the ball, DO NOT THROW IT UP. 5. KICK with dominate foot. 6. POINT TOE DOWN so laces are facing your target. FOOTBALL POSITIONS: 1. What is the job of the center? a. To start the play by snapping the ball after the quarterback gives the cadence. 2. What is the job of the quarterback? a. To handoff/pitch the ball to a running back, or throw the ball to a receiver. They can run the ball if they have no one open to throw it to. 3. What is the job of the receiver? a. To run out on a pass route and catch the ball thrown by the quarterback. 4. What is the job of the defense? a. To prevent the other team from scoring. 5. What is the job of the pass-rusher (player guarding the quarterback)? a. To put pressure on them (after 3-Mississippi count) and try to sack them. FOOTBALL NEED-TO-KNOWS: 1. What is an interception? a. When the ball is thrown and a player from the defensive team catches the ball instead of the offense. 2. What is the line of scrimmage? a. An imaginary line that runs across the field where the ball is spotted after the last play; where the last play ended and the next play begins. Offense and Defensive teams cannot cross the line of scrimmage until the ball is snapped. b. The ball can be thrown forward if behind the line of scrimmage, but must either be ran or pitched backward if in front of the line of scrimmage. 3. What is a fumble? a. When a player is running with the ball and they drop it; OR when a snap, handoff or pitch (ball is thrown in the backward direction) is made and the ball is not caught. 4. What is the cadence that the quarterback says before the center snaps the ball? a. DOWN – SET – HUT 5. What is a sack? a. When the quarterback is tackled behind the line of scrimmage. 6. What is an incomplete pass? a. When the quarterback throws toward a receiver, but the catch is not made. 7. How does the line of scrimmage change if there is an incomplete pass? a. It doesn’t, the line stays where it was for the previous play. 8. How does the line of scrimmage change if the receiver catches the ball, runs for 15 yards, and then goes out of bounds? a. It moves 15 yards forward to the spot the receiver went out of bounds. 9. How many points is a touchdown worth (WITHOUT EXTRA POINTS)? a. 6 10. If your team has scored 6 touchdowns and no extra points were scored, what is your team score? a. 36
