Dear Members,
Almost 40 years ago, visionary philosopher and educator Marshall
McLuhan predicted that everyone would have their own television
channel. And he was right. My daughter just bought a video iPod on
which she can watch Alicia Keys perform her latest hit; our Chicago
Tonight producers can access breaking news, weather and traffic
updates, anytime and anywhere, on their laptops; 33,000 people a
month are listening to an online stream of 98.7WFMT; and 25,000
viewers a month are watching WTTW programs on demand. More
and more of my colleagues are e-mailing me from their Blackberries.
Even my Starbucks experience is high-tech; now I get a free
downloadable Joni Mitchell tune with my latte, and Paul McCartney
released his last CD exclusively through the coffee chain. And
then there is YouTube—a place where everyone is a producer with
the perfect medium to air their creations, in perpetuity. With today’s
technology, we truly are the masters of our own media domain.
We can get content when, where, and how we want it.
Only a few years ago, my friends in public broadcasting were
concerned about competing with 500 cable stations. Well, I’m proud
to say that public broadcasting is holding its own. It still reigns...
unique and distinctive.
In spite of our current funding challenges, WTTW had a
phenomenal 2007. Highlights include the national launch of our first
PBS children’s series WordWorld, a lively animated program
which brings words alive for children ages 3 to 5; WTTW National
Productions produced David Broza at Masada: The Sunrise Concert
with Jackson Browne and Shawn Colvin, our first international
high-definition broadcast, shot in southern Israel; we were one
of the first public television stations in America to add the Spanishlanguage channel V-me to our roster; 98.7WFMT launched its
international streaming service for classical music listeners around
the world; and our WTTW production team complemented the
14-hour epic miniseries The War: A Ken Burns Film with a compelling
series of personal reminiscences from local World War II veterans.
Their profoundly moving stories aired around episodes of the series,
as a stand-alone program, and were posted in a special section of
our website. In the fourth quarter, we cut the ribbon of the
Alexandra C. and John D. Nichols Production Operations Center.
In fact, with three digital channels up and running (WTTWD, V-me and
Create), we are exceptionally well prepared for the February 2009
deadline for digital conversion. And our Early Childhood Learning
workshops, community outreach initiatives, and partnerships with
Chicago’s leading cultural, educational, and philanthropic institutions
are stronger than ever.
As you glance through this Annual Report, please be assured
that there isn’t a day that goes by that we don’t appreciate
your generous support. We simply couldn’t produce award-winning
programming if it weren’t for you. We are also deeply grateful to our
committed Board of Trustees, corporate partners, and foundations
that have supported us.
And in closing, I’d like to thank our departing Executive Vice
President of Development, Farrell Frentress, for nearly a decade of
leadership, dedication, and inspiration. Enjoy your retirement—
we will miss you!

Trustees, staff and friends of

February 26 for a sneak preview

ScienceNow!
On March 19, WTTW and the
Adler Planetarium co-hosted
ScienceNow!, a discussion on
science education and literacy
with renowned astrophysicist
Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, host of
the PBS series NOVAscienceNow.
Lunch & Learn
Chicago Tonight correspondent
Christian Farr was the featured
speaker at the annual Lunch
& Learn event held at the WTTW
studios on March 29. Guests
enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour
of the studios and an engaging
presentation by Farr, who talked
about stories he has covered
during his more than 10 years of
working in television news.
Celebrate the
American Song
Ann Hampton Callaway and
very special guest Liza Minnelli
lit up the stage at the WTTW11/
98.7WFMT Celebrate the American
Song gala, which drew more than
350 people to the Northwest Side
studios on May 10. Guests at the
fundraiser were treated to incredible
performances from the multitalented artists, recorded as part
of a new public television series
pilot, Singer’s Spotlight with
Ann Hampton Callaway.
Taste of Check, Please!
More than 500 people came to the
WTTW studios to sample the
cuisine of 30 diverse restaurants
at Taste of Check, Please!, the
fourth annual celebration of the
popular weekly series. The May 18
event was hosted by Master
Sommelier Alpana Singh, and also
offered wonderful music from
The Orbert Davis Quintet, Mi Peru,
the Miguel Nuño trio, and
flamenco dancers Los Chocolates.
Arts Across Illinois:
CenterStage
A variety of outstanding music,
dance, and poetry was presented
on Arts Across Illinois: CenterStage,
the annual performance special
broadcast live from WTTW’s
Grainger Studio. The June 21
program aired as part of the Arts
Across Illinois series, which is made
possible by the Illinois Arts Council
and features artists, arts organizations, and community groups
supported by the state agency.
The War Preview
In July, friends of WTTW had the
opportunity to meet filmmaker
Ken Burns at two preview events
at Northern Trust Bank and
the Chicago History Museum
for his epic mini-series The War:
A Ken Burns Film. Burns and
his co-producer and director
Lynn Novick shared fascinating
stories from the creation of the
World War II documentary, which
aired to widespread acclaim on
WTTW in September and October.

and Greet
A special Chicago Tonight
Meet and Greet event drew an
enthusiastic group of viewers to
the WTTW studios on July 26,
where they mingled with the hosts,
correspondents, and behind-thescenes staff of the nightly public
affairs series.
Fun and Run
Elmo, Grover, and Curious George
were just a few of the popular
characters that could be found at
the WTTWKids Fun and Run, which
drew more than 5,000 children
and adults to Chicago’s Lincoln
Park on August 26. The family
event featured a 3K walk/5K run,
games, activities, music from
the acclaimed group Wee Hairy
Beasties, and much more.
Jim Lehrer Events
Jim Lehrer, the Executive Editor
and Anchor of The NewsHour with
Jim Lehrer met with friends of
WTTW at two special events
held on October 11, at which he
shared fascinating stories from
his journalism career and signed
copies of his new novel, Eureka.
The gatherings took place at the
Union League Club of Chicago
and at the home of Nina Donnelley
and Trustee Jim Donnelley.
Nichols Production Center
In October, The Production
Operations Center at the WTTW
studios was named in honor of
Alexandra C. and John D. Nichols.
The Nichols’ made a special gift in
support of the Center, which
houses new digital technology used
in the production of programs.

Robin and Richard Colburn
generously hosted a WFMT event

for Young Artists. The June 29
gathering was attended by a group
of WFMT donors, who heard a
variety of vocal selections from
opera to musical theater.

Benefit Concert
WFMT’s second annual Folk
Festival Benefit Concert drew an
impressive line-up of musicians to
Chicago’s Harris Theatre for
Music and Dance on September 9.
A lively audience of folk music
fans heard performances from
John Flynn, Susan Werner, Richard
Shindell, Tanglefoot, and other
popular artists.
Exploring Music with
Bill McGlaughlin…LIVE!
WFMT listeners had the
opportunity to meet the host of
the popular radio series Exploring
Music with Bill McGlaughlin
at the Merit School of Music on
October 17. The program featured
performances from Merit School
students and commentary by
Bill McGlaughlin.

Community Outreach
One of WTTW11’s most important
goals is to enhance the messages
and themes of our programming
through face-to-face interaction
with our audience. Our community
events, workshops, and screenings
venture beyond the television
screen and establish relationships
with partner organizations.
A few notable examples from the
past year include:
NOVA: Marathon Challenge
To commemorate the 30th
anniversary of the Chicago
Marathon, WTTW hosted a screening
of NOVA: Marathon Challenge
for 400 viewers at the Ryan
Family Pavilion at Northwestern
University. This extraordinary
documentary went behind the
scenes with 13 novice runners
as they trained for their first
marathon. Partnering with NOVA
and Fleet Feet Sports, the screening
event helped WTTW connect with
a younger viewing audience, while
capitalizing on Chicago’s longtime
relationship with the sport of
long distance running.
Outreach for Families
and Children
9th Annual Latino Book
and Family Festival
This year, WTTW and V-me
participated in the 9th Annual
Latino Book and Family Festival,
which attracted more than
15,000 participants. Participating
were dance troupes, Latino
celebrities, and award-winning
journalists who discussed their
latest books. WTTW and V-me
provided free books to children
and entertained family members
of all ages with Jim De La Luna
(Jim from the Moon), a walkaround character from the show
of the same name. Families were
also treated to a preview of
V-me’s wide range of programming,
including WTTW’s locally-produced
Ventana a Chicago.
No More Bullies Initiative
At the start of the new school year,
364 Chicago public elementary
schools received booklets
and DVDs from WTTW’s No More
Bullies initiative. Developed
in partnership with the Children’s
Brain Research Foundation,
this material contains useful
information for parents, teachers,
and children about how to
combat bullying.
The Zula Patrol:
Under the Weather
In June, WTTW Kids held a special
event at the Adler Planetarium,
where guests were treated to a
screening of The Zula Patrol:
Under the Weather; were greeted
by walk-around characters from
the series, Multo, Bula, and Zeeter;
and explored The Zula Patrol:
Mission Weather exhibit, designed
to develop youngsters’ curiosity
about the earth’s weather. In addition, WTTW’s Early Learning
Initiative invited PBS outreach professionals from Midwest stations
to participate in a Zula Patrol
outreach conference. Members
of the Zula Patrol Education Team
demonstrated how PBS outreach
professionals could incorporate
basic concepts of science and
astronomy into their parent/
teacher community workshops.
WTTW Kids Scout Tour Day
Approximately 250 Girl and
Boy Scouts and their chaperones
were treated to an exciting
educational tour of the WTTW
studios, a special opportunity for
scouts to learn about careers in
media and how WTTW programs
are produced. Each Scout
received a Scout Tour Day patch
for attending.
