XCELLENT BLOWS THEM
AWAY AT ELLERSLIE
Classic winner remains unbeaten in New Zealand
in brief
I RVL TRACK POLICY
Racing Victoria Limited’s Director –
Racing Operations Leigh Jordon has
confirmed the introduction of a pre-race
day track inspection policy, effective
immediately, following the postponement
of last week’s VRC meeting at Werribee
and concerns over the state of the
Geelong track on Sunday. Jordon says
an inspection will be made of every
country track in Victoria, the day prior to
conducting a TAB meeting.

ew Zealand's dual 'Horse of the Year'
Xcellent made a stunning return to
the track at Ellerslie yesterday with a lastto-first win in the Sir James Fletcher
Stakes (Gr 3) (pictured) over 1600m.
Positioned at the rear of the field turning
for home, Michael Coleman pulled the sixyear-old son of Pentire (GB) to the outside
and under hands and heels, Xcellent
lengthened strongly to reel in the front runner Sir Slick to win by two lengths with the
favourite Wahid in third.
Sidelined with tendon problems for the
duration of 2006 and much of 2007,
Xcellent remains unbeaten in his seven
New Zealand starts, four of those at group
1 level, notably the 2004 New Zealand
Derby. A $45,000 purchase at the 2003
Karaka Premier Sale by Paul Moroney,
Xcellent is the apple of Moroney’s eye. “It's
a fairytale result not only for us, but also for
all of racing, racing needs horses like him.”
Moroney said. “It's a mixture of relief and
pride for me. The relief is to see him come
back and win and the pride is for all the
people who have been associated with
getting him back to the races, it’s been an
outstanding effort.”

IFHA WORLD RANKINGS
EL SEGUNDO OUR HIGHEST RATED
l Segundo is Australia’s highest internationally-ranked racehorse following the release of the latest International
Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA) world top 50 list.
Following his win in the W.S. Cox Plate (Gr 1) at Moonee Valley,
El Segundo has been rated 122, placing him equal 18th on the
rankings.
Melbourne Cup winner Efficient, 2006/2007 horse of the year
Miss Andretti and the Yalumba Stakes (Gr 1) winner Maldivian
are all rated on 120. Marasco was the only other Australian
horse to make the top 50 with a 119 rating with established international performer Takeover Target a notable omission. Hong
Kong star Sacred Kingdom has been given the same rating as
Miss Andretti ahead of their much anticipated clash in the
International Sprint at Sha Tin on Sunday.
Manduro (130) has retained the mantle of top ranked racehorse
in the world in the latest edition of the World's Leading Horses,
which covers the period 1st June 2007 to 25th November 2007.
His impressive performances in winning both the Prix du Haras
de Fresney le Buffard Jacques le Marois (G1) over 1600m and
the Prix Foy (G2) over 2400m proved his versatility in terms of
distance, but it was his performance in beating Dylan Thomas
(128) and Notnowcato (123) impressively in the Prince of
Wales's Stakes (Gr 1) over 2000m at Royal Ascot that confirmed
his status as the best horse in the world as ranked by the panel
of official handicappers drawn from the major racing nations affiliated to the IFHA.
Admire Moon (123) demonstrated his versatility in terms of
distance in returning to form when winning the Japan Cup (Gr 1)
over 2400m, having previously won the Dubai Duty Free (Gr 1)
earlier in the season over 1777m. His performance in defeating
Pop Rock (122), who himself produced a career best effort in finishing second, enabled Admire Moon to regain his position as
top racehorse in Japan, while Meisho Samson (122) matched
his performance in the Tenno Sho (Autumn) (Gr 1) with a fine run
in third.
Efficient (120) showed an impressive turn of foot in the straight
to win the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1) and his performance in that race
ranks him only just behind the Irish stayers Septimus (122) and
Yeats (121) and equal to the recently retired Scorpion (120) in
the extended distance category.
Encosta de Lago’s impressive son Sacred Kingdom (120)
announced himself as a potential new star in the sprinting
division when easily winning the Cathay Pacific International
Sprint Trial (HK2) and now shares top rank in the sprinting category with two horses he is scheduled to meet in the forthcoming
Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1), namely Benbaun (120)
and Miss Andretti (120), who has recently taken the
Schweppes Stakes (Gr 2) and the Age Classic (Gr 1) to add to
her impressive success in the Kings Stand Stakes (Gr 2) at
Royal Ascot back in June.

STUD PROFILE
WIDDEN IS A PLACE OF HISTORY
Widden Stud is like no other horse farm in the world. Its geography and complete isolation from the rest of the world is simply
incredible. Located on 7,000 acres in the Widden Valley in the
Hunter Valley, the property is surrounded by sandstone cliffs and
is encased by a world heritage national park. One thing which
strikes you about the stud, in addition to the sheer natural beauty, is the incredible tranquillity.
The farm is
unique not only
in its geography
but in its history
having
being
owned by the
Thompson family
since
its
establishment.
John Thompson
emigrated from
England arriving
in Australia on
6th December 1832 with his two sons and a niece, his wife having died during the journey. Coming from a successful cloth
manufacturing family, John’s expertise
bought prosperity to the family and his son
William acquired land for himself on Nullo
Mountain. In 1854 William Thompson and
Thomas Harris sought an official survey of
creek frontage land in the Widden Valley
that they then bought in 1856.
William and his father John secured two
blocks totalling 603 acres along the
Widden Brook; and was the first purchase
of land by the Thompson family in the
Widden Valley. The Thompson family
continued to add to their land holdings
with William’s son John and John Thomas
Frost purchasing the central part of
Widden Stud as it is today in 1867.
During the1870’s the Thompson family
business moved away from sheep to concentrate on horses; firstly draught and
stock horses and then thoroughbreds.
This was the beginning of the Thompson family dynasty in thoroughbred breeding, which has continued to today. In 1917 the
Inglis Yearling Sale catalogue contained 375 lots; 115 or 31%
were bred by members of the Thompson family. Between 1897
and 1939, stallions located at the family studs topped the leading sires tables 29 times during 41 breeding seasons with the
likes of Lochiel, Grafton, Malster, Ayr Laddie, Linacre and Valais.
Widden-based stallions continued to dominate the Australian
leading sires tables and over the years the stud has been home
to Champions that include:
Bletchingly (1970’s and 80’s); Australia’s most successful Star
Kingdom-line stallion and three-time Champion Sire whose progeny included Kingston Town; winner of 30 of his 41 career starts
and his hugely successful sire son Canny Lad who stands today
at Woodlands.
Australian Horse of the Year Vain, who broke the legendary
Tulloch’s stakes winning record for a 3YO. One of the best
sprinters the world has seen Vain’s victories included the Golden
Slipper, Champagne Stakes, VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes and
the Caulfield Guineas. Vain was leading sire twice in Australia,
siring 46 stakes winners which included the Golden Slipper victors Sir Dapper and Inspired.
Marscay (1980’s and 90’s) winner of eight of his 15 career starts
including the Golden Slipper. He was twice Champion sire in
Australia and his winners including Bint Marscay; Australasian
Champion 2YO, Triscay; Australasian Champion 3YO Filly,
Today Widden is run by Anthony Thompson and is home to 10
stallions including being the Southern Hemisphere base of
Haras du Quesnay’s Champion Anabaa.
In recent year’s Widden have remained competitive in the
Australian stallion market; providing breeders with a diverse
range of top-quality stallions. In such a competitive market
Widden encourage their clients to become shareholders in the
stallions which they buy; for example their recent acquisition of
Stratum - the 2005 Golden Slipper winning son of Champion sire
Redoute’s Choice. In addition to Anabaa
and Stratum, the 2007 Widden Stud roster
included General Nediym (Nediym),
Honours List (Danehill), Intergaze
(Integra), King Cugat (Kingmambo), Lucky
Owners (Danehill), Snippets (Lunchtime),
Southern Image (Halo’s Image) and
Strada (Danehill).
Widden, however, are also an agistment
farm offering clients foaling, breeding,
rearing and sales preparation services.
This type of farm is becoming increasingly
rare, especially in the Hunter Valley and
the land on which Widden is situated is
good quality pasture and therefore horses
are given the best possible start in life.
Widden has been active at the major
broodmare sales both in Australia and also
globally; including at Tattersalls and
Keeneland. In Australia, Widden are consistently a leading vendor at the William
Inglis & Son and Magic Millions weanling, yearling and broodmare sales. Each year Widden sell well over 100 broodmares
for the clients and bring a quality yearling draft to the major yearling sales in Sydney, the Gold Coast, Perth and Adelaide.
The combination of factors which make Widden unique along
with the careful management and development of the farm as a
commerical
property
will
mean that the
success experienced over the
past 100 plus
years should
continue well
into the future.

HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL NEWS
DOCTOR DINO PLEASES GIBSON
f French racing fans have forgotten all about the existence of
one of their country’s stars of this season, you could hardly
blame them. They have to cast their minds back to April this season, and the Prix Ganay at Longchamp, to recall the last time
that Doctor Dino made an appearance on French soil, when
third to subsequent ‘King George’ and ‘Arc’ winner Dylan
Thomas – form that doesn’t read too badly now.
No subsequent injury or mishap has kept him away from the
race tracks of France, simply the decision taken by his Chantilly
based English trainer, Richard Gibson, and Spanish owner Dr
Javier Martinez Salmean to commit ‘the Flying Doctor’ to a
Group 1 international campaign that has seen the chestnut campaigned as far afield as Singapore, Chicago, New York,
Newmarket, and now with the Hong Kong Vase as his end of
season target – all since that distant day in April.
“We had a horse that has the right temperament and the right
attitude to travel - he thrives on it,” Gibson explains, “and so we
decided to campaign him in the major international races around
the world. The owner is a sportsman from Spain, so he has to
travel wherever Doctor Dino (pictured below) runs anyway, and
he does travel wherever the horse goes.”
Belmont Park in New York for his first success at that level. After
that the call was either to go to Toronto for the Canadian
International, or to Newmarket for the Champion Stakes. “ We
went to Newmarket, and it was the right thing to do, but the
ground came up a little soft for him. He still ran a good race,
despite getting interfered with a couple of furlongs out.”
“I like to space his races out, he runs best fresh, so the next
option was either to go for the Japan Cup or the Hong Kong
Vase. I had the feeling that the stiffer track and uphill finish at
Tokyo might just not be in his favour, so that really made up our
minds to come to Hong Kong.”
“Look, I know that Dylan Thomas is the form horse and on what
he’s achieved this year should win. But he’s had a hard season,
and mine is a fresh horse, and that might narrow the gap
between them. He’s in good form and has been settling in well
at Sha Tin.”
Trackwork for the international challengers for the Cathay
Pacific Hong Kong International Races 2007 commenced in
earnest at Sha Tin on Monday morning and Dylan Thomas, the
highest-rated active horse in the world, looked in powerful form
as he put in a strong canter on the all-weather under his regular
world rider, Pat Lillis. Trainer Aidan O'Brien's travelling head lad,
Pat Keating, later confirmed the wellbeing of Europe's Horse of
the Year ahead of his swansong in the Cathay Pacific Hong
Kong Vase this Sunday, 9 December.
“He's thriving in this good weather and he seems in good order.
We just kept him ticking over in Japan as well as we could, and
I've been very happy with him since he's been here,” Keating
said. “This track will suit him much better than Monmouth Park
where he was never travelling on the very soft ground. He's had
a long season, true enough, but he seems to be holding his form
- he's a tough horse. You only have to look at his record for proof
of that.”
Ballydoyle's other international runner, Excellent Art, runner-up
last time out in the Breeders' Cup Mile, also looked well as he
put in a regulation canter on the all weather under his work rider
Keith Dalton. Trainer Aidan O'Brien will be at Sha Tin on
Wednesday morning to oversee his runners' final preparation.
Dr Martinez is in fact a sportsman in every sense, having in his
youth worn the famous white of Real Madrid, before opting for a
long term career in medicine rather than a briefer sporting one
with Spain’s illustrious football team. The plan has paid off too
as ‘the doctor’ has been a model of consistency all season long.
Following that run behind Dylan Thomas in the Ganay – a promising seasonal bow – the Doctor shipped into Kranji , Singapore,
for another third place finish beaten a short head for second –
behind the Japanese raider, Shadow Gate and Cosmo Bulk in
the Singapore Airlines International Cup in May.
Next it was off to Chicago for a tilt at the Arlington Million in
August, and another third place finish – again beaten a short
head for second – that was starting to prove frustrating. “ I think
those two short heads cost his owner about US$100,000 a time,
says Gibson.
Doctor Dino stayed over in the USA, and travelled on to New
York. In his fourth Grade 1 start of the year, “the Doctor” hit the
jackpot, running out the winner of the Man O’War Stakes at
Several other major chances for the Turf World Championships
were on show on Monday morning. The likely second favourite
for the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint, Miss Andretti pleased
Lee Freedman with a light jog on the sand under her regular
partner Scott Magee. “I'm very happy with what I saw this morning. She's relaxed, her weight is good, and she's raring to go,”
enthused Hall of Fame trainer Freedman. “Tomorrow we will
look to give her a decent gallop on the course proper and that
should bring her to her peak. The new facilities here are great
and my foreman Scotty tells me she's settled in really well.”
Viva Pataca, assured to start favourite for the Cathay Pacific
Hong Kong Cup, has, John Moore said, “had a preparation that's
gone as exactly according to plan and he's definitely the one to
beat.”
“He's going better now than when he won the [Cathay Pacific
International] Cup Trial the other day. And he's definitely better
now than when we saw him win those two Gr.1 races [Audemars
Piguet QEII Cup and Champions & Chater Cup] towards the end
of last season.”

STALLION NEWS
HOST ON THE WAY TO AUSTRALIA
hilean Champion Host, a dual Group One winning son of
Hussonet (USA) will stand the 2008 breeding season in
Australia following his purchase by a syndicate managed by
Byron Rogers. A winner of over US$1m in prizemoney in a 26
start career, Host has won at Grade 1 level in North America and
Chile, notably a six and a quarter length victory in the Chilean
2000 Guineas and then the Shadwell Mile (Gr 1) in North
America.
"We are currently in negotiations to stand Host in Australia in
2008. He was a Champion at two and three, beat some great
horses in his career running brilliant times and importantly for the
Australian broodmare population he is free of Northern Dancer,”
Byron Rogers said yesterday. “Having been part of the team that
relocated his sire to Australia I am naturally delighted to also be
part of his best son to retire to stud.”
DANROAD MAKING NEWS
Highview Stud-based sire Danroad has achieved notable sales
results in both hemispheres in recent weeks. At the New Zealand
Ready To Run Sales of two-year-olds at Karaka last month a
Danroad gelding ex Komplete Kaos two-year-old fetched an
excellent sale price of NZ$135,000. Offered by Phoenix Park,
this son of Danroad was bought by John Morrisey. Meanwhile, in
the Northern Hemisphere last week a Danroad foal ex Lawless
Bridget has been sold at the Tattersalls sales for 30,000 guineas.
Danroad has been making his mark as the sire of stakes performer Amazing Sky. Trained by Mark Walker, Amazing Sky is
being touted as a contender for the Wakefield Stakes at Trenth
in March, which was a race won by Danroad himself.
Danroad will be strongly represented at the 2008 New Zealand
Bloodstock Yearling Sales series at Karaka.
MOUNTAIN HIGH TO COOLMORE
Danehill's Group 1-winning son Mountain High has been retired
from racing and will stand under the Coolmore National Hunt
banner at The Beeches Stud. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute,
Mountain High recorded a career best when landing the Grand
Prix de Saint-Cloud (Gr 1) in May this year from triple Group 1
heroine Mandesha.
Bred by Ballymacoll Stud, Mountain High is out of the Group 1
Yorkshire Oaks winner and St. Leger runner-up Hellenic who has
also produced two other Group 1 winners in the shape of
Islington and Greek Dance.
“Mountain High is a very good-looking horse, with plenty of size
and a great walk. He's a Group 1 winner with a fantastic pedigree
so we are extremely confident that he'll prove to be very popular
with breeders,” said Beeches manager Robert McCarthy. His fee
will be announced at a later date.
